One tenth of the fairy tales in the Estonian Folklore Archives have been collected in Virumaa. The article gives an overview of the fairy tale types most widely spread in Virumaa: wondertales ATU 300, 301, 313, 327A, 403C, 409, 480, 650B, and animal tales ATU 117, 169*, 243. Some tales of magic less known elsewhere in Estonia (ATU 312D, 326, 650B) are inherent in Virumaa. The article dwells upon fairy tales including anthroponyms, which are rather exceptional among fairy tales, and also fairy tales that are related to concrete places in Virumaa. In spite of some eastern features especially prominent in four parishes of Ida(East)-Viru County, Virumaa fairy tale tradition generally belongs to northern Estonian fairy tale repository. By their strategies of name-using in fairy tales, Virumaa narrators have been similar to the ones elsewhere in Estonia. Although Virumaa fairy tales seem to include more place names than in Estonia on average, the most peculiar developments in this sphere often result, above all, from the style of concrete collectors.

During his exile at island of Saint Helena, Napoleon is condemned to look back upon his life. Le Mémorial, dictated by Napoleon and edited by Las Cases, is the very foundation of Napoleonian legend. Napoleon mentions the ingratitude of those monarchs which he installed to the throne himself and who later denied him. The work is the bases of the legend that oscillates between monarchy and citizenship, the king and the nation and the dictatorship and liberty. As a literary work Le Mémorial inspired Musset, Chateaubriand, Mme de Staël, Bourrienne, la duchesse d’Abrantès, Balzac, Mme de Rémusat and many others. It has also influenced all European cultures, including Czech literature. The one, who “changed the world” died in solitude and obscurity, in deep meditation about his own failure.

Przez kilkaset lat we wnętrzu cysterskiego kościoła klasztornego w Oliwie przechowywany był kamień, który uważano za skamieniały chleb oraz towarzysząca mu tablica mówiąca o klęsce głodu. Najstarsze informacje o kamieniu pochodzą z napisanej na początku XVI w. kroniki Simona Grunaua. W kronice znalazła się też legenda przedstawiająca okoliczności przemiany chleba w kamień. Na przełomie XVIII i XIX w. kamień zaginął w nieznanych okolicznościach. Tablica znajdowała się w kościele do 1956 r., kiedy została oddana do konserwacji. Jak dotąd nie powróciła na dawne miejsce. Do obecnych czasów dotrwała legenda o kamiennym chlebie, powtarzana w różnych wariantach przez kolejnych autorów.

Over several hundred of years there was a stone inside the Cistercian Abbey in Oliwa which was believed to be petrified bread, together with a stone tablet telling of famine. The earliest information about the stone come from Simon Grunau’s chronicles (Preussische Chronik) written at the beginning of the 16th century. The legend of the transformation of the bread into stone was also detailed in his chronicles. Between the 18th and 19th centuries the stone was lost in unknown circumstances. The tablet was kept in the abbey until 1956, when it underwent restoration. Since then it has not been returned to its proper place. The legend of the petrified bread has been retold in many different versions by different authors, right up to the present day.

Artykuł jest próbą analizy wybranych legend odzwierciedlonych w szkicach podróżniczych Iwana Bunina "Cień ptaka". Cykl zawiera elementy zaczerpnięte z mitologii wielu różnych kultur. Są to między innymi opowieści o założeniu miast, legendy związane z wizerunkami-symbolami, opowiadania o znanych historycznych i religijnych postaciach, a także o fantastycznych stworzeniach. Mitologiczne obrazy przytoczone w tekście przez Iwana Bunina są wielofunkcyjne, a każdy z nich odsyła czytelnika do innych obrazów i jednocześnie wzbogaca wyobrażenie o kulturowej i historycznej pamięci.

The article is an attempt to analyze the selected legends reflected in Ivan Bunin’s travel essays 'Bird’s Shadow'. The cycle of essays contains elements taken from the mythology of many different cultures. These include stories about the founding of cities, legends related to symbolic images, stories about famous historical and religious figures and fantastic creatures. Mythological images provided by Ivan Bunin are multifunctional, and each of them sends the reader to other images and at the same time enriches the image of cultural and historical memory.

The second part discusses the question, why the real person and authoress is ignored by this very myth and — even more — is not met with reception in literary history.
