This paper presents the results of measurements of wood macrostructure parameters and wood density in dominant trees of Scots pine, Norway spruce, and European larch, originating from an even-aged stand, therefore growing on identical sites and in identical climatic conditions. The influence of the cambial age of annual rings and the cross-section area on the measured features was determined in this study. The measurements of macrostructural parameters were taken using an image analyser. Basic density was determined on samples containing three annual rings. In the analysed species the widths of annual rings demonstrated significant differences in the first 50 years of tree growth. The smallest widths of annual rings throughout the whole period of tree growth were observed in the case of spruce wood. The latewood share, analysed within 25-year increment zones, demonstrated statistically significant differentiation between tested species in all selected zones of the cross-section. For each of the tested species the lowest shares were observed for juvenile wood. The lowest density values were observed, therefore, in this zone. In the mature wood of larch and pine an approximate 20% increase in the density was observed and furthermore, all the way to the circumference, density showed slight fluctuations. In the case of spruce wood, the values of density within the analysed zone increased towards the circumference. Accordingly, larch wood and pine wood were characterised by greater uniformity of properties, compared to spruce wood. This observation has important practical implications, because density is a determinant of many properties that influence the technical quality of wood.

Compared to the formation of male generative organs, the development of female sporogenous tissue of the European larch (Larix decidua Mill.) is considerably delayed. The young megaspore mother cell (megasporocyte, MMC) is not observable until late October, a short time before the period of dormancy. In early spring, MMCs become moderately enlarged, with intensive accumulation of starch grains around the nucleus. At the end of the first 10 days of March the MMCs become more rounded in section and the nucleus moves towards the basal part of the cell (near the chalaza). The integument and nucellus become observable at that time and chromosomal strands are visible in the MMC nuclei. Meiosis of MMCs was observed from mid-March to early April. During that period the tip of the integument grows gradually over the nucellus and creates the stigmatic apparatus of the ovule. Instead of the expected tetrads, triads of linearly arranged unequal megaspores were observed in individual ovules at the beginning of pollen shedding. Immediately after meiosis of the MMC, massive growth of the functional chalazal megaspore occurs, along with intensive free-nuclear divisions. The nuclei become located near the megaspore membrane, whereas the whole central part of the developing female gametophyte is filled with an extraordinarily large central vacuole. During intensive growth of the functional megaspore, the innermost layer of the nucellar tapetum gradually disintegrates. This development stage lasts until early May, when the megaspore membrane segregates partially from the nucellar tapetum and the free-nucleate female gametophyte assumes an irregular sac-like shape. The cellular stage of the female gametophyte with typical pyramidal cells at its micropylar end is visible at mid-May. Then the vacuolated (so-called frothy) archegonia gradually forms. The disappearance of vacuoles and the division of the central cell were registered in late May. At the stage of the large female gamete (egg cell) and the small ventral canal cell, the archegonia become fully receptive for fertilization. Our observations indicate that the development of the free-nucleate gametophyte and the formation of cell walls among the nuclei are the most sensitive phases of ovule development in the European larch before fertilization. During these stages, numerous cases of degeneration of the female gametophyte were observed, along with the complete deformation of ovules. The reasons for frequent irregularities are discussed here; the influence of meteorological and nutrient conditions seems especially important.

The article presents a method of extracting galactoglucomannans from conifers: spruce and larch. Galactoglucomannans (GGMs) were extracted from shavings of Polish varieties of spruce and larch, using thermal and enzymatic treatment in an aqueous environment. The composition of the extracted GGMs (depending on the extraction method) was characterized by varied content of individual monosaccharides, i.e. glucose, galactose and mannose, as well as the average particle mass. The quantitative and qualitative composition of the extracted GGMs is an important factor affecting the possibility of their wide employment in modifying cellulose fibre-containing materials in order to improve their barrier qualities, and as biological agents in plant health products. GC/MS and SEC chromatographic tests and 13C NMR analysis made it possible to establish the composition and structural changes of the acquired GGMs.

W artykule przedstawiono sposób wyodrębniania galaktoglukomannanów z drzew iglastych: świerku i modrzewia. Galaktoglukomannany (GGM) wyodrębniono z trocin drzewnych krajowych odmian świerku i modrzewia z zastosowaniem obróbki termicznej i enzymatycznej w środowisku wodnym.

This study is a fragment of a long-term research on a genetic-silvicultural value of larches of Polish provenances (Table 1, Fig. 1) tested under mountain conditions of the Sšcz Beskid range within the All-Polish Provenance Experiment of Larch 1967. Investigations were based on numerical data on the degree of infection of trees of analyzed partial larch populations with a pathogen Lachnellula willkommii (Hartig.) Denis during 1984 – 1999, i.e. when trees were 20, 25, 30, and 35 years old. Results showed a significant diversification of tested provenances in respect of resistance to larch canker, and a certain tendency of its decrease with age of trees (Tables 2 and 3). Provenances of various regions of Poland were in the group of populations most susceptible to this disease, i.e. with trees showing symptoms above the experimental average (Fig. 3). The resistance to larch cancer of individual partial populations, under mountain conditions of the study area situated in experimental forests of Krynica, was in the first place determined by the genotype (Fig. 4). While the evaluation of the effect of the interaction genotype (provenance) x years of observation (age) pointed to a high stability of resistance to canker of larch populations of extreme values of this trait (Fig. 5). This creates, especially in the case of this provenance group, the possibilities to conduct the effective resistance selection in the early stage.

It is commonly known that Japanese larch, Larix kaempferi was first introduced in Europe in Great Britain in 1861. In the presence of European larches, L. decidua it was not long before the first hybrids between these species, called Dunkeld larches (Larix × marschlinsii), emerged there. It was found that there were several hybrid larch trees in Estonia that sprouted before one of their parent species was introduced in Europe. One of the oldest Dunkeld larches growing in Tallinn is about 210 years old. The radial growth of three Dunkeld larches in Estonia (in the cities of Pärnu and Tallinn and in the manor park of Suure-Kambja) and the determination of their age by cumulative growth graphs are discussed, with consideration given to the available knowledge on the introduction of Japanese larch. The conclusion is that there may have existed earlier alternative introduction routes of Japanese larch into northern Europe via Russia.

Experiments on somatic embryogenesis in selected spruce, fir and larch species were performed to determine if this method of micropropagation enables production of quality seedlings for forest nurseries. High frequencies of embryogenic callus in spruce (23-31%) and fir (29%) were achieved when mature zygotic embryos were used as explants, while in larches (36%) only when megagametophytes (endosperms with immature embryos) were used. The possibility of somatic embryogenesis initiation also from somatic embryos (resulting in secondary and third generation of embryogenic callus) indicate high efficiency of this method of micropropagation. The best results at all stages of somatic embryogenesis (good proliferation of embryogenic callus, high rate of embryo regeneration and their survival) were obtained for Norway spruce, European larch and some hybrid larches.
