The article is a brief evaluation of the regulatory environment of language use in Transylvania, Romania based on Van Parijs’ conceptual toolkit presented in his 2011 book Linguistic Justice for Europe and for the World. This linguistic regime is a coercive hybrid regulation containing elements stemming from both the categorical regime (personality principle) and territoriality. In municipalities or counties where the official use of minority languages is permitted, it is typically present in a conjunctive manner, but its enforcement is weak and inconsistent. The principle of territorially coercive linguistic subdivision – proposed by Van Parijs as an optimal solution for a greater linguistic justice – is not accommodated in any of the fields of official communication and under present political circumstances it has no further plausibility. A hypothetical alternative for the territorially coercive regime would be the introduction of English as a lingua franca in interethnic communication. We argued that this latter option would be fair only if English could entirely replace the official languages currently in use or it would receive a fully equivalent status at least in those regions where a considerable number of linguistic minorities live.

The article highlights the basic ways some well-paid present-day politiciaus and publicist slant our language issue and structure reality in images. The analysis discloses the elements of propaganda in their tactics as they spread news, arguments, rumours and lies to influence public opinion. The study discredits the fable that the Ukrainians willingly switch from their language to Russian as well as shatters other myths concocted to prove that bilingualism is historically valid, that Ukraine is totally Russianised, that its population is split and polarized, that the Ukrainian language is artificial, inadequate, unspoken and dead. The false images of the situation are meant to impose a radical shift in the language of the Ukrainians and change their citizenship.

The article analyzes the phenomenon of linguistic shame among Belarusians from the sociolinguistic point of view. The topic is new in Belarusian socio¬linguistics and linguistics in general, as it was previously was considered mainly as a mere marginalization of the language. The study of linguistic shame is based mainly on Belarusian material: analysis of works by Belarusian writers who described the phenomenon before linguists, analysis of the Belarusian president's discourse on the Belarusian language and interviews with Belarusian men who served in the Sovietera army. The interview reveals an interesting gender aspect of the phenomenon of linguistic shame: for the first time the Soviet army is analyzed as an additional structure that imposed shame on Belarusian men for their language and culture. Also, the study is based on external experiences of this phenomenon: for example, the well-known phenomenon of auto-odi or linguistic hate of oneself of Catalans or linguistic shame of Ukrainians.
