This work presents the results of Small Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS) investigations of the structure of lamellar stacks in ethylene-1-octene copolymer during heating and cooling. The SAXS curves were analysed using the Intensity Superposition Method (ISM). By means of this method, not only the average values of the parameters of lamellar stacks but also the stacks crystallinity distribution function were determined. Based on this function, the structure of lamellar stacks during crystallization and melting of the copolymer was compared and observed differences were indicated.

Przedstawiono wyniki badań struktury stosów lamelarnych w kopolimerach etylen-1-okten, wykonane metodą małokątowego rozpraszania promieni rentgenowskich (SAXS) w trakcie ogrzewania i chłodzenia.

Tailings, av. d. 1.16, suspended solids content and d. 22.6% and 2.796 g/mL, resp., were fed, 400–500, 600–800 or 800– 1350 m3/h, into a prefilter and a gravitational preclassifier to yield the concentrate and the overflow and the latter was passed at 0.1 MPa through 6, 12, or 18 of 200-mm hydrocyclones (outflow nozzle best at ø 45 mm), resp. The hydrocyclones overflow was combined with the preclassifier fine-sized overflow, flocculated and passed through two inparallel lamella (each 600 m2 in effective surface area) clarifiers to recover ~640 m3 clear water/1000 m3 tailings. The fine fraction contained 50 and 90+ % of particles <10 and <50 ìm in size, resp. Its d. must not exceed 1.42–1.43 g/mL. Each of six com. flocculants used, 6.72–8.95 g/m3, was effective. An addntl. separator can cut flocculant consumption by 50%.

The fine anatomical structures of the olfactory epithelium of Cyprinus carpio (Linnaeus) have been systematically studied with the help of the scanning electron microscope (SEM). The olfactory rosette is an oval structure composed of a number of lamellae arranged on a median raphe. A large part of the lateral surface of the rosette is covered with non-receptor epithelium, whereas the receptor epithelium occupies a much smaller area in the middle part. The nonreceptor epithelium is covered with a tuft of ciliated supporting cells, among which the stratified epithelial cells and mucous cells are located. The receptor epithelium is represented by the flagellated and microvillus receptor and supporting cells. Different cells on the olfactory epithelium correlate with the functional significance of the fish concerned.

The Late Triassic was a time of pronounced radiation in several groups of foraminifers. The rapid evolutionary processes in the Suborder Involutinina caused particularly high diversification of these aragonitic foraminifers, which became a key group for Upper Triassic biostratigraphy. Among them, Triasina hantkeni and Triasina oberhauseri are regarded as the most precise guide fossils. However, while these species are widely used, a poor documentation of the detailed test struc− ture of T. oberhauseri has resulted in misidentifications. The exceptional preservation and abundance of Triasina oberhauseri in the Upper Triassic deposits of the Black Marble Quarry (Wallowa terrane, Oregon, USA) has allowed us to make the first detailed observations of its coiling, innermost structure and lamellae arrangement and to recognize mor− phological features that were either wrongly interpreted or not described in the original systematic definition of the spe− cies. In this paper, we demonstrate that the species possesses characteristics that hamper its assignment to Triasina and we propose a new genus, Aulosina, to accommodate this taxon. Placing emphasis on the accuracy of the morphological de− scription, the diagnosis and the systematic definition of the species are here improved. The identification of innovative features in Aulosina oberhauseri (strengthenings, shortened lamellae) highlights new evolutionary trends for the lineage of Involutinina that have proved useful for the establishment of phylogenetic links between involutinid genera and for un− derstanding the evolutive steps leading to the formation of inner−pillars in tubular foraminifers. The increasing complex− ity of Involutinina representatives at the end of the Triassic, notably marked by the appearance of internal structures in Triasininae, leads us to regard them as probable symbiont−bearing foraminifers.

According to one hypothesis, the exopods of extinct lamellipedian arthropods functioned as gills. To evaluate this hypothesis, the growth rates in Limulus polyphemus for total gill surface, average area per single gill lamella and number of gill lamellae are documented. The rates are compared with corresponding rates in decapod crustaceans in order to make deductions on morphological constraints in multi−foliated gills. The growth rates are given as allometric scaling exponents relative to the animal dry−body weight. The comparisons reveal that each allometric exponent is similar among examined species irrespective of differences in gill morphology or animal body plans. The numerical growth of lamellae obviously is much smaller than the growth of the total respiratory surface. To fulfill these trends in multi−foliated gills, the overall profile tends to become conical, with the result that the surface area is a couple of magnitudes larger at the base of the cone than at the tip. This geometrical shape appears to keep the numerical value of the total respiratory area (total lamellar surface) proportional to the cube of the total number of lamellae. The situation is entirely different in animals with lamellipedian exopods. In the latter, lamellae are slender structures carried in a straight row and, as exemplified by Naraoia, their increase in number during the growth is only half that required for the exopod lamellae to have functioned as an arthropod multi−foliated gill cone.
