XML documents are considered to be a very good way of data interchange, though their verbosity makes it questionable to exchange XML documents in networks with low bandwidth. However, there are compression methods aimed at reducing the amount of transmitted data, capable of compressing XML very well. The paper describes the structure of XML documents, and how it could be exploited to improve compression, and presents existing XML, compression methods and their performance. The main contribution is testing a new predictive-substitutional compression method's performance on XML documents
