In the paper the case of the squirrel cage failure in high voltage induction motor is described. This motor is operating in the drive characterised by long starting time and by very high and frequent overloads. The analysis of drive operation and reasons of failure curried out. The changes in rotor construction has been proposed to increase the motor service life.

Electrical motors operating at low temperatures and in aggressive environment, such as liquid natural gas for instance, should exhibit high reliability, efficiency, and good electromagnetic parameters, both in dynamic and static states as well. Low working temperature has significant influence on change of parameters of conductive materials, and electrical sheets. Changes of their parameters determine run and values of the current and torque during start of the cage induction motor. The paper presents results of laboratory tests, calculations, and computer simulations of parameters changes of conductive and magnetic materials submerged in liquid gas with temperature of-161°C. Results of calculation targeting to elaboration a way of the starting current decreasing and starting torque increasing of cage induction motors working at very low temperatures are given. The shape, cross-section and material of a rotor's cage are the most influential elements on the above mentioned motor's parameters. That is why the paper presents chosen results of the influence analyze of these elements on the torque and current values and runs of the studied motor.

Field-circuit model of electric machine can be used for investigation of its structural components shape influence on operating characteristics. The high power induction motor model was applied to examine effects of rotor bar shape modification, consisting in replacement the trapezium shape bar with rectangular bar. Torque and current characteristics and characteristic quantity of start-up torque and current, maximum torque and critical slip were determined with field-circuit model. Electromagnetic torque, currents and rotational speed, as function of time during motor start, were determined also. The effect of rotor bar height change were examined in similar way. All rotor bar shape modifications were realized with constant cross-sectional area. The results confirm, that the exchange of bars in considered design will bring economic profits and won't cause significant deterioration of operating features.

The paper describes high output induction motors driving large applications of heavy starting conditions. Heavy start is characterised by long accelerating time and occures in drives of hudge inertia torque, esspecially when performed at full load. The reliable operation of the motors depends on proper design and quality of rotor's cage. The aspects of thermal behaviour and electrodynamic forces have to be considered during the design of the motor for hard working conditions. In the paper the rotor with idle bars is investigated.
