Moreover, the author takes into account the personal aspect of these messages, namely, who formulates the text in the press and how. The subject of the study was opinion-forming tendencies appearing in one of the leading Polish newspapers "Gazeta Wyborcza". The aim of the paper is to present the various attempts to name the genre of texts in which a presenter gives an account of a sports event: a sports commentary, running commentary, and news broadcast. The author presents the most important definitions of these terms which can be found in the literature, and proposes a systematisation of these terms in relation to specific media.

The article attempts to decide whether sports reports are more about news or commentary. Based on an analysis of press material, the author examines various characteristics of the genre and tries to determine their compatibility with the news canon. As the analysis shows, contemporary sports reports are less about news and more about commentary, interpretation or evaluation. Journalists tend to sum up the contest and briefly describe the course of events. This makes sports reports similar to press comment and review.

The paper contains an analysis of a highly popular regional daily TV news program called “Łódzkie Wiadomości Dnia” (Daily News from Lodz), emitted and produced by channel TVP Łódź. The author carried out precise quantitative and qualitative research based on the programs emitted during one full week. The character of the program proved to be different than that of nationwide and international TV news magazines, and contained more social and practical information for the average viewer (about infrastructure, ordinary people and their problems, cultural events in Łódź and in the surounding region). The editors try to avoid hard political news and controversies, usually remaining closer to infotainment and politainment. The selection of news and topics benefits the program and results in the high quality of this regional TV news magazine.

The author presents the proceedings used by the linguists involved in the media research highlights dominant approaches, distinguishes two hypothetical ones: hegemonic and sovereign, and discusses challenges related to both of them. Hegemonic approach in the media research means the a distinctly defined subject of the study, that is the language of the media, precisely defined subject of analysis, namely the language of the media, and a supremacy of linguistic methods used in the analysis. The linguist as a sovereign prefers an open attitude towards methods applied in the study. Such an approach considers achievements of the media scholarshop as well as other related scientific disciplines. This attitude in the media research means that the linguist analyzes an image of the world in the media, a stylistic differentiation of the media communication, media genres, and the discourse. Furthermore, the linguist as a sovereign claims creating a new linguistic discipline and widens the research field with contrastive issues.

The author analyses commentaries on classical music in the Polish media. She indicates that this kind of journalism appears rarely in the broad-range press, on the radio and on television, but that it plays an important role in culture and music press. As far as the broadcast media are concerned, it appears mainly in the public media. The author analy-ses selected press titles, their genres and content. She observes that the functions of press are more and more often adopted by the Internet (the Internet fora or musical blogs). The restricted number of commentary genres is transparent in press articles, while reviews and interviews are most frequent. The authors of these texts are often inexperienced and lack appropriate education. One of the reasons of the limitations of the music commen-tary is that the articles and programmes seem interesting only to a small group of receiv-ers, and the senders are subject to conditions of the free market and conform to the most common tastes. Therefore, when analysing this issue, the receiver’s perspective seems very important. Media interest in music commentary depends on the receivers’ cultural activity, and this activity depends on the level of general education and music culture in the country. Polish music tradition is much weaker than in many other countries, such as Germany. The abandonment of musical commentary would be unfavourable, because such journalism plays many important functions, such as culture- and opinion-making functions.

The article presents the origins, main research trends and development perspectives of the science of genre types and variations in the media. Genological knowledge can be used in research on communication both in the historical and the contemporary take, it allows analyzing the media discourse, comparing the changing norms and formal features of press, radio and Internet statements. Knowledge of genre conventions, typological features and journalistic genre functions is also an important part of didactics during journalistic studies. The authors point to the dynamics of genre transformation, influenced by technological changes in media, which lead to creating mixed, hybrid structures, unclassified in the established typological conventions. This acceleration, together with the fast, ongoing convergence of media, all the more justifies the need for further in-depth genological research.
