The article discusses the issue of perspective in linguistic historiography. The main question is that of how the historiographic perspective changes the description of a given historical epoch. This is demonstrated using three different descriptions of an important period in Czech linguistics, or more precisely, in Czech thought about language culture delimited by the works of Jan Gebauer, Josef Zubatý and Václav Ertl. Each of these descriptions is an example of one distinctive type of historiographic perspective and each is analyzed in a metahistoriographic manner in the second part of the article. The views of philosophers Stephen Toulmin and T. S. Kuhn are introduced and interpreted for these purposes.

This article provides a theoretical and practical response to the so-called Concept of Minimal Intervention (CMI) first outlined in Cvrček (2008a), and later expanded upon in Cvrček (2008b). The theoretical part uses the analogy with Macura’s (1995) analysis of the early National Revival discourse and presents examples of (un)successful interventions into the language to provide textual proof that the CMI discourse consists of contradictory statements. It is thus revealed that the function of these statements is not to describe the phenomenon, but rather, to serve Cvrček’s own purpose: the negative depiction of language regulation and intervention into language. Presenting evidence from the language counselling service of the Czech Language Institute, the practical part demonstrates that CMI’s call for minimal intervention is not in accordance with the needs of the general public and that the means proposed to minimise intervention by linguists would not work as expected. A current view of the traditional concept of language cultivation, its terminology and methodology – refused by CMI – is also presented.

This article addresses the issue of empirical research on language attitudes. In the first part, some of the up-to-date investigations of attitudes towards Czech are discussed. The second part introduces the matched-guise technique to Czech linguistics and points out some examples of how this technique has been used and modified. Criticism of this technique is mentioned briefly. In the third part, the possibilities of implementing the matched-guise technique using Czech material are considered (e.g. the difference in the evaluation of different items of one variety; the difference in the evaluation in different situational contexts; language attitudes and code-mixing/code-switching in Czech; the issue of language discrimination).

This article is concerned with texts by František Čermák devoted to issues of Czech language cultivation. Four major topics are analyzed: standard vs. common Czech, written vs. spoken Czech, prescriptivism and the native language of Czechs. Various problems in the analyzed texts result from an unclear methodological background. Many concepts are used without argumentation: Čermák fails to substantiate their suitability for his language description. We can find uncorroborated generalizations which can be interpreted as Čermák’s communicative strategy. Many statements are rather impressionistic and are not based on relevant language observations. With regard to these findings, the author of this paper argues that a deep-reaching dialogue should be held, which may help to clarify the indeterminate situation in Czech linguistics concerning issues of language cultivation.

The paper outlines the conceptualization of language cultivation from the perspective of so-called ontological “socialism”. In the first part, it briefly describes this conceptualization, concentrating on its central, most relevant aspects (concepts of intersubjectivity, common knowledge and normativity of language). In the second part, it deals with its selected implications for the subject field of language cultivation, in particular with regard to the phenomenon of language correctness. In the final, third part, the paper tentatively proposes the contours of a research program that would be useful to establish in light of these implications.
