The paper is concerned with strength analysis of multi-clip joints. Such structures enable visible growth of the carrying capacity and make them elements easily assembled by the clamping jaws and a single-clamp press. Each joint exerts an appreciable influence upon the safety level of the whole structure. A numerical analysis was performed to assess the effect of clearance between a sleeve and rope upon the joint quality. Phenomena emerging in the area between the clips were analysed as well. Some strength tests related to the process of drawing the wire rope out of the sleeve were also investigated. Changes in the stiffness of the clamping sleeve were analysed in view of the influence of the aforementioned factors upon the carrying capacity of joints and the sleeve material effort. Experimental investigations were conducted as well aiming at the determination of the smallest possible number of clips or the effective length of joints necessary for carrying the loads higher than the admissible load of the wire rope.

W pracy przeprowadzono analizę złącz wielozaciskowych. Umożliwiają one osiągnięcie większej nośności złącza poprzez zastosowanie szczęk zaciskających i prasy do zacisków jednokrotnych.

Introduction: Sarcomas are a rare group of malignant tumours. This study highlights important findings in 91 cases of nonodontogenic sarcomas of the orofacial region. Materials and Methods: Patients who presented with orofacial sarcoma at the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department of a regional University Teaching Hospital between January 1997 and June 2017 were retrospectively studied. Excluded were cases of Kaposi and odontogenic sarcomas. Data obtained were analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 16 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA). Results from descriptive statistics were represented in the form of charts. Results: A total of 91 cases were reviewed and consisted of 51 (56.0%) males and 40 (44.0%) females, with a male to female ratio of 1.3:1. The mandible (n = 47; 51.6%) and the maxilla (n = 26; 28.6%) were the major sites involved. Osteogenic sarcoma (n = 44; 48.4%) and rhabdomyosarcoma (n = 16; 17.6%) occurred more frequently. A total of 41 (45.1%) patients had surgery and the common hard tissue procedures were mandibulectomy (n = 26; 28.6%) and maxillectomy (n = 10; 11.0%). Discussion: Most recurrences were noted less than one year post treatment. There is a tendency for patients to present late and compliance with follow-up review is poor in this environment.

The origin and phylogenetic relationships of most modern coleoid groups have not yet been explained by reliable fossil evidence, in large part because of the reduction or disappearance of a calcified chambered shell during their evolutionary history. Herein we describe two exceptionally large coleoid lower jaws from the Upper Cretaceous strata in Hokkaido, Japan. On the basis of the comparison of gross morphology and morphometric data of the lower jaws of modern and fossil coleoids, we assigned the two lower jaws to the following new taxa: Nanaimoteuthis hikidai sp. nov. of the order Vampyromorpha (superorder Octobrachia) and Haboroteuthis poseidon gen. et sp. nov. of the order Teuthida (superorder Decabrachia). The lower jaw of N. hikidai is distinguished from other species of the same genus from the Upper Cretaceous of Vancouver Island (Canada) and Hokkaido by having a broader, more anteriorly curved hood of the outer lamella. The lower jaw of H. poseidon seemingly exhibits mosaic features like those of modern teuthids and sepiids but is assigned to Teuthida on the basis of the overall shape of the outer lamella and the development of a distinct fold on the lateral wall. Because of the unusually large lower jaws, these new taxa appear to be comparable in body size to modern giant squids (Architeuthis spp.) and the Humboldt squid (Dosidicus gigas). This and other discoveries of large jaws referable to octobrachian and decabrachian coleoids from the Upper Cretaceous strata of the North Pacific fill the gap in the relatively poor fossil record of mainly soft-bodied coleoids.

Possibilities of applying several experimental methods to the analysis of displacements, strains and stresses in bone structures and implants are presented. Such methods as photoelasticity, holographic interfe-rometry, speckle photography and strain gauges are described. These techniques are significant in experimental investigations, especially during fast improvement of modem analytical and numerical methods. Experimental methods are indispensable for experimental verifications of boundary conditions in theoretical models. Experimental investigations of real objects and biomechanical models were carried out.

Partially preserved temnospondyl mandibles from the Late Permian–Early Triassic Buena Vista Formation of Uruguay are referred to the basal stereospondyl taxon Mastodonsauridae. These represent the earliest known members of this group for South America. In most cases, this assignment was based on the characteristic morphology of the postglenoid (= postarticular) area of the lower jaw together with the presence of a hamate process. Comparisons with basal mastodonsaurids indicate that the Uruguayan specimens are phenetically similar to Gondwanan and Laurasian Early Triassic taxa, such as Watsonisuchus, Wetlugasarus, and Parotosuchus. Nevertherless, they display some characters which have not previously been described in Mesozoic temnospondyls. The Permo−Triassic Uruguayan mastodonsaurids support a Gondwanan origin for the group, an event which probably occurred sometime during the latest Permian.

This work presents the procedure featuring elevation of the bottom of a maxillary sinus. A numeric model of a jaw was developed in the ANSYS system based on the CT photos and a physical model with division of the existing bone into core and spongy parts. Initial numeric simulations for the target load factors were also presented. The developed numeric model of a jaw will be subject to further resistance tests, which will provide the answer to the question on how the course of the procedure featuring elevation of the bottom of a maxillary sinus impacts the distribution of load and deformations in the back part of a jaw.
