Scattering and absorption of light in water leads to degradation of images captured under the water. This degradation includes diminished colors, low brightness and undistinguishable objects in the image. To improve the quality of such degraded images, we have proposed fusion based underwater image enhancement technique that focuses on improving of the contrast and color of underwater images using contrast stretching and Auto White Balance. Our proposed method is very simple and straightforward that contributes greatly in uplifting the visibility of underwater images.

In this paper a new method for the reduction of multiplicative noise in digital images is described. The proposed algorithm is a modification of the Mean-Shift (MS) filter which is based on the concept of the Non-Local Means (NLM) denoising. The proposed algorithm does not focus on single pixels only, as in the case of the mean-shift technique, but also on their neighborhoods. The performance of the novel approach is experimentally verified and the obtained results prove that the new design is superior both to the MS and NLM techniques.

Fingerprint classification is used by anthropologist in detection of genetic disorders in infants. This paper describes application of image processing and pattern recognition methods in classification of fingerprints. Fingerprint classifiers, which are part of an automatic system for rapid screen diagnosing of trisomy 21 (Down Syndrome) in infants, are created and discussed. The system is a tool supporting medical decision by automatic processing of dermatoglyphic prints and detecting features indicating presence of genetic disorder. Images of dermatoglyphic prints are pre-processed before the classification stage to extract features analyzed by the Support Vector Machines algorithm. Application of an algorithm based on multi-scale pyramid decomposition of the image is proposed for the ridge orientation calculation. RBF and triangular kernel types are used in the training of SVM multi-class systems generated with the one–vs–one scheme. The experiments conducted on the database of the Collegium Medicum Jagiellonian University in Cracow show the effectiveness of the proposed approach in classification of infants’ fingerprints.

Microscopic technology has recently flourished, allowing unparalleled viewing of microscopic elements invisible to the normal eye. Still, the existence of unavoidable constraints led on many occasions to have low contrast scanning electron microscopic (SEM) images. Thus, a noncomplex multiphase (NM) algorithm is proposed in this study to provide better contrast for various SEM images. The developed algorithm contains the following stages: first, the intensities of the degraded image are modified using a two-step regularization procedure. Next, a gamma-corrected cumulative distribution function of the logarithmic uniform distribution approach is applied for contrast enhancement. Finally, an automated histogram expansion technique is used to redistribute the pixels of the image properly. The NM algorithm is applied to natural-contrast distorted SEM images, as well as its results are compared with six algorithms with different processing notions. To assess the quality of images, three modern metrics are utilized, in that each metric measures the quality based on unique aspects. Extensive appraisals revealed the adequate processing abilities of the NM algorithm, as it can process many images suitably and its performances outperformed many available contrast enhancement algorithms in different aspects.

In this paper a novel class of noise attenuating and edge enhancing filters for color image processing is introduced and analyzed. The proposed adaptive filter design is minimizing the cumulative dissimilarity measure of a cluster of pixels belonging to the sliding filtering window and outputs the centrally located pixel. The proposed filter is computationally efficient, easy to implement and very effective in suppressing impulsive noise, while preserving image details and enhancing its edges. Therefore it can be used in any application in which simultaneous denoising and edge enhancement is a prerequisite for further steps of the color image processing pipeline.

Optical microscopes face limitations due to diffraction, which can impact the clarity and resolution of the resulting images. Enhancing these images typically involves techniques such as contrast improvement, sharpening, and noise reduction, which help make features more discernible. In this study, we propose an algorithm aimed at enhancing contrast and illumination using Dark Channel Prior (DCP) and Adaptive Histogram Equalization (AHE) to improve image clarity. For illumination enhancement, we utilize the Lab color model, specifically focusing on the light formation component (L) while preserving color. This method was compared against several others, including the Retinex Algorithm with Colour Restoration, Adaptive Histogram Equalization and Fuzzy Logic, Fuzzy Logic by Stretch Membership Function, Median-Mean Based Sub-Image-Clipped Histogram Equalization, Principal Component Analysis Using Reflection Model, and Modified Color Histogram Equalization, using both reference and non-reference quality standards. Our algorithm aims to enhance image contrast and brightness without introducing color distortion, achieving favorable values for Entropy (7.913), mean of the standard deviation (61.04), Structural Similarity Index Metric (0.760), and Perception-based Image Quality Evaluator (35.324).

We deal with image processing applied to 3D analysis of vascular morphology in magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) images. It is, above all, a state-of- the-art survey. Both filtering and segmentation techniques are discussed. We briefly describe out most recent contribution: an anisotropic non-linear filter which improves visualization to small blood vessels. Enhancement of small vessels is obtained by combining a directional L-filter applied according to the locally estimated orientation of image content and a 2D laplacian orthogonal to this orientation.

Image enhancement is becoming increasingly im portant with the advancement of space exploration techniques and the technological development of more durable and sci entifically sound observatories equipped with more powerful telescopes. The enhancement of images helps astronomers an alyze the results and act toward determining the dates of religious festivals. This work describes a technique known as contrast-limited adaptive histogram equalization (CLAHE) with grayscale contrast enhancement and bilateral filtering. We apply CLAHE on the L component of the CIE-Lab color space to adjust lightness contrast. Subsequently, grayscale contrast enhancement is performed to increase the visibility of the moon crescent. Noise caused by grayscale contrast en hancement is reduced using bilateral filtering. Two quantitative measures are selected (PSNR and MSE) to show the visual improvement achieved by the proposed algorithm.

Algorithms for examination of the density and selected parameters of movement of sperm cells have been elaborated and implemented. The conducted research is a part of work on a computer system for semen analysis. The system will allow for an increase in the precision of examination thanks to an exact specification of numerical values of the chosen parameters. An additional advantage of the system is an increased time efficiency of examination. Nowadays, the basic type of examination is an estimated analysis of semen parameters by visual observation of a sample, based on a physician's subjective assessment of an image. Registration of images is impossible in visual analysis.

This study discriminates different lithological units of the Dokan Area, Kurdistan Region, NE-Iraq, using rapid-eye satellite data by image enhancement techniques, namely the false colour composite (FCC), optimum index factor (OIF), minimum noise fraction (MNF), principal component analysis (PCA) and band ratio (BR). Results of analyses show that the FCC (R: 5; G: 4: B: 1); MNF (R: 2, G: 3, B: 5); PCA (R: 5, G: 2, B: 1), and band ratio (R: 5/4, G: 2/1, B: 5/3) are the best to different geological formations. The results are confirmed in the field support with the geological maps available for the area. Geological formations appeared as a result of the collision process between the Arabian plate and the Iranian plate. In general, the study area is mountainous, which is usually represented by anticline folds with the main NW - SE trend in the study area, with very a rugged relief mainly due to the continuous collision between the Arabian plate and Iranian plate. The digital image processing of satellite data has demonstrated the sensor’s capability and efficiency of the image processing methods in identifying and mapping geological units in the study area.

A new filtering approach designed to eliminate impulsive noise in color images, while preserving fine image details is presented. The computational complexity of the new filter is significantly lower than that of the Central Weighted Vector Median Filter (CWVMF). The comparison shows that the new filter outperforms the CWVMF, as well as other standard procedures used in color image filtering for the removal of impulsive noise.

This paper describes two methods for enhancement of edge and texture of medical images. In the first method optimal kernel size of range filter suitable for enhancement of liver and lesions is deduced. The results have been compared with conventional edge detection algorithms. In the second method the feasibility of feature based pixel wise image fusion for enhancing abdominal images is investigated. Among the different algorithms developed in the medical image fusion pixel level fusion is capable of retaining the maximum relevant information with better implementation and computational efficiency. Conventional image fusion includes multi-modal fusion and multi-resolution fusion. The present work attempts to fuse together, texture enhanced and edge enhanced images of the input image in order to obtain significant enhancement in the output image. The algorithm is tested in low contrast medical images. The result shows an improvement in contrast and sharpness of output image which will provide a basis for a better visual interpretation leading to more accurate diagnosis. Qualitative and quantitative performance evaluation is done by calculating information entropy, MSE, PSNR, SSIM and Tenengrad values.
