Pollen viability was tested in two hybrid swarm populations of Pinus mugo and P. sylvestris in northern Slovakia and in control populations of the parental species. It was significantly reduced in hybrid populations, as evidenced by average germination percentages ranging from 49.0% and 61.53% and by pollen tube length averaging 74.54-86.47 µm. The corresponding values in the control populations were 78.38-88.5% and 102.92-152.84 µm, respectively. The frequency of microsporogenesis disturbances at the tetrad and mature pollen stages was higher in hybrid swarms than in the control population of P. sylvestris. Based on in vitro germination data, the amount of sterile pollen was estimated at 40-41% in hybrid swarm populations, 12% in P. sylvestris, and 21% in P. mugo.

Fruit production should be adapted to future scenarios that are frequently associated with scarce resources, especially freshwater and fertilizers. New biologically-based fruit production strategies, i.e. taking into account tree growth and water status, are required to optimize irrigation and fertilization under abiotic stress conditions. It was hypothesized that a moderate abiotic stress, here deficit irrigation with or without nitrogen deficit, in the preharvest period, could decrease postharvest losses due to diseases and pruning weights due to reduced vegetative growth, without sacrificing the yield and fruit quality. This study was conducted over two years using the same trees of ‘Moncante’ nectarine cultivar grown in a commercial orchard. Trees were assigned to three treatments: (1) full irrigation at 80% estimated crop evapotranspiration (ETc), (2) deficit irrigation, i.e. at 75% of full irrigation, and (3) deficit irrigation and deficit nitrogen, i.e. at 75% of full irrigation and 75% of usual N-fertilization adopted by the grower in this commercial orchard. Deficit irrigation alone and in combination with deficit nitrogen reduced postharvest diseases and pruning weights without significant yield losses. Our results suggest that ETc-based approaches of reduced water irrigation may be a sustainable way to decrease phytosanitary inputs and workload in the orchard while maintaining the orchard performance.

W pracy przedstawiono wyniki selekcji odmian wyki kosmatej (Vicia villosa Roth.) pod kątem zimotrwałości. Przedstawiono również zasady wykonywania zabiegów agrotechnicznych, wynikających z biologicznej specyfiki rozwoju rośliny, wraz z tworzeniem wyko-trawiastych mieszanek. Mieszanki te charakteryzują się optymalnym stosunkiem komponentów dzięki ograniczeniu norm siewu i stabilnym plonowaniem, osiąganym przez prowadzenie zbioru w okresie uzyskiwania maksymalnej dojrzałości biologicznej.

Results of selection of the hairy vetch (Vicia villosa Roth.) varieties on winter durability are presented in the paper. Principles of agro-technical measures resulting from biological characteristic of the plant growth and a composition of vetch-grass mixtures are also presented. The mixtures are characterised by the optimum proportion of components (due to the limitation of sowing standards) and by stable yielding obtained through harvesting in the period of maximum biological maturity.
