This article explores prospects of using Ubuntu and Capabilities Approach to expand the scope of humanitarian action, to design one which serves humanity better even in the absence of disaster to essentially fulfil human development needs. It is considerate of the fact that humanitarian works contributes immensely in determining the extent to which humanity thrives. The traditional view on humanitarianism presupposes action-driven initiatives geared towards devising interventions to restore or reinforce human social order, improve livelihoods and quality of life. In sociological terms, human development is dependent on realizing and safeguarding, amongst others, human well-being, civil liberties and social security. The article utilizes core values enshrined in Ubuntu, Africa’s historic philosophy of life, and Amartya Sen’s Capabilities Approach as tools of analysis, with the view to expressing how to operationalize what should be considered stable humanitarian conditions and human well-being. Owing to persistent socio-economic challenges, especially the poverty problem, it is asserted that humanitarian action ought to depart from being a post-disaster intervention strategy, to being a pro-active and preventative pre-disaster orientated action, intended to nurture well-being and resultantly enable human development.

W artykule przedstawiono wybrane aspekty oceny dostępności obiektów użyteczności publicznej dla osób niepełnosprawnych. W tym kontekście przedstawiono wyniki badań przeprowadzonych na grupie osób niepełnosprawnych, identyfikując bariery architektoniczne dla nich w obiektach użyteczności publicznej aglomeracji krakowskiej. Wyniki ankiet pozwoliły także zapoznać się z ogólnymi badanych w zakresie dostępności budynków dla osób niepełnosprawnych. Z uwagi na wagę i skalę problemu oraz znikomą liczbę publikacji na ten temat podjęte badania wydają się być jak najbardziej potrzebne i uzasadnione.

The article discusses the issue of accessibility of public facilities for people with disabilities. In this context, it includes the analysis of provisions contained in legal acts and the analysis of selected public buildings in Krakow. In the methodological scope, a survey was conducted among disabled people. Due to the large scale of the problem, this topic seems to be as justified as possible.

W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badań ankietowych przeprowadzonych wśród uczniów ósmych klas podstawowych szkół warszawskich. Badania miały na celu ocenę opracowanej Skali Samopoczucia Fizycznego, Psychicznego i Społecznego młodzieży. Określono trafność teoretyczną skali, jej rzetelność, moc dyskryminacyjną i stopień trudności odpowiedzi na poszczególne pytania.

The purpose of this study was to develop and validate the questionnaire used to measure adolescents' wellbeing and its physical, mental and social dimensions. The questionnaire was composed of two parts: the first part contained wellbeing indicators and the second part contained criterion indicators (health disorders and harmful behaviours). Physical wellbeing scale contained the most common complaints due to psychosocial and life style factors, and was measured by three indicators: headache, abdominal pain and backache. Mental wellbeing scale contained emotional and moral dimensions that were recognised as closely connected with the physical disorders from one hands and the process of socialisation from the other hands. There were eight indicators: fatigue, stress, fear, depression, loneliness, helplessness, feeling of guilt, and low self-complacency. Five indicators: perceived social support, relationship with mother, father, friends and teacher measured social wellbeing scale. Each indicator of wellbeing is scored in three scales: dichotomise scale, five-point Likert scale and visual analogue scale. The cluster sample of 445 schoolchildren aged 14-15 years, randomly selected from the last grade of elementary schools of Warsaw was surveyed in October - November 1999. The physical, mental, social and total wellbeing scales were found to be reliable, but differing in internal consistency. The total and mental scales of wellbeing demonstrated high reliability, while the physical and social scales demonstrated moderate reliability. Analysis of correlation between criterion and tested variables showed acceptable discriminative power of the physical, mental, social and total wellbeing scales. Respondents assessed the five-point Likert scale as easier in comparison to dichotomise and visual analogue scales.

This is a working paper that presents the first phase of what will eventually be a huge project, namely a critical appropriation of Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics. Early on it provides a sketch of the main strands of Aristotle’s theoretical web in his N. Eth-ics. Following that, the paper offers some critical commentary concerning some of Aris-totle’s main positions: especially his views on moral virtue, the soul, intellectual virtue, and human well-being. The paper then turns to the development of some significantly different ways of construing both intellectual virtue as well as moral virtue. With re-spect to intellectual virtue, I present my own perspective in interconnection with a pro-cess-oriented way of understanding reality, as opposed to Aristotle’s substance-oriented way. With respect to moral virtue, I present my interpretation in relation to a this-worldly understanding of the human spirit/soul, as well as a humanistic-Marxist inter-pretation of human well-being. Toward the paper’s end, I offer some suggestions con-cerning a modified “doctrine of the mean” that would be a sort of critical synthesis of the views of Aristotle and Confucius.

Na podstawie długoterminowych badań dokonano oceny wpływu hałasu drogowego na stan zdrowia i samopoczucie mieszkańców wielkich miast. Porównanie ocen stanu zdrowia i samopoczucia mieszkańców z odmiennych warunków akustycznych wskazuje na występowanie istotnego związku między hałasem a wymienionymi czynnikami.

Comparative analysis among 357 inhabitants, who live in two areas: noisy (above 70 dB /Af) and moderate (below 57 dB /A/) showed significant differences between the groups in many variables under consideration. This differences, after eliminating socio-economic influences and behavior factors such as: gender, age, economical conditions, education or smoking confirmed existance of relation between living condition caused by motorization and life quality, well-being and self assessed health of inhabitants. Details showed, that urban intensive traffic noise disturbs realization of many important daily activities, evoke emotional tension, irritation, nervousness. In group of people from noisy areas more often are observed characteristic mental pressure caused by noise, throat and eyes irritation, disturbances in rest, speach, listen to music, sleep, and when going to sleep. Feeling of discomfort and annoyance dominates. More often there is a need to close or seal up the windows, use earplugs or take a sleeping pills. Relative risk of appearance of disturbances mentioned above or mental and emotional reactions in group of people who are exposed to high noise from 3 do 6 times bigger in comparison with people from quiet area. Apart from a decrease in the mental comfort and live quality, intensive traffic noise has a big influance on well-being and self assessed health status. The intensification of complaints and symptoms of neurotic character are observed in noisy areas. Most of these problems are connected with cardiovascular system (palpitation, constriction in chest, hot flush, tiredness after effort) and excessive nervous stimulation. Long lasting influence of noise is probably also a cause for a frequent nervousness, feeling of tiredness after night sleep and overstress, troubles with concentration or distinct reduction of well-being (feel unhappy and miserable, inability to cope with troubles, reduce ability to take of decisions). Addditionally, the escalation of troubles probably connected with bigger air pollution (frequent dry cough, sneezing, nasal stuffing) is observed in areas of intensive traffic noise. Relative risk of appearance mentioned above unfavourably health symptoms in group of peoply from noisy areas is about 1,5 times higher than in areas below 57 dB /А/. Analised data did not confirm hypothesis on influence of traffic noise on increasing appearance of diseases confirmed by physician. In both areas noisy and quiet morbidity are similar. Also consumption of medicines was similar.
