Human life has the highest possible value and is particular interest to various branches of law. It allows the unit to use other civil rights and civic freedom. In this article authoress analyses the level of the protection of human life through the provisions of the Constitution of the Republic of Poland and regulations of the international law with emphasis on the issue of the beginning of the legal protection of human life. In order to thoroughly analyse the legal regulations the authoress uses numerous examples of the case-law. The research purpose of the article is to show the complexity of the problem of the beginning of the legal protection of human life and the lack of the conclusive verdict of the supranational jurisdictional bodies in this matter.

The aim of this article is to show how the philosophical thinking finds its way into human life and activity, into the various and mutually incomparable domains of it. Four of them are chosen and discussed from the point of view of philosophical engagement: (1) the existential – human sphere, (2) Nature, (3) the universe of mathematical objects, and (4) the social sphere. The author wants to show that a philosophical attitude enables us to perceive a more profound layer of sense in the investigated subject matter, and to understand better the meaning of scientific discoveries. The sphere of social relations and interactions deserves special attention. Interpersonal communication and any interaction is essentially based on the transcendental subjectivity investigated in the history of philosophy by Descartes, Kant, and Husserl. The author suggests that, as a result, a certain level of philosophication of sociology is in needed, a kind of sociosophy. Within such a perspective interpersonal interactions and communication appear to be clashes of individual worlds, transcendentally constituted by transcendental subjects (compare L. Wittgenstein’s saying: The world is always my world ). Of course, such an approach may evoke a critical positivist reaction under the banner of Ockham’s razor. But, on the other hand, some observable triviality of today’s sociology does not leave the other side without a chance.

The value of human life currently ranks among the topics which are often discussed by general public as well as by experts of various scientific faculties. It also belongs to subjects that have been perpetually dividing society into two camps. The first one consists of those for whom life is sacred, refusing any human interference and influence. The second one is a group of those for whom quality of life is more important and when, in their view, a human life does not happen to be good enough and further suffering only “derogates” its dignity, such life is allowed to be terminated. Natural law, which exists in every human, is divided into those who stand on the side of life and its dignity and to those who believe the human was created in the image and likeness of God. Therefore, it is important to talk about the value and dignity of human life, especially with children and young people who currently receive a great amount of often conflicting information which they cannot properly evaluate. Besides family, which is supposed to be the first source of information on fundamental issues of human life, young people acquire information that may affect their thinking and acting also in school, mainly during religion and ethic education lessons.

The paper discusses the teachings and legislation of St John Paul II on human life and its legal protection. The Pope’s attitude to abortion, euthanasia and the death penalty was subjected to closer analysis. The author also points out that the legal protection of human life in the teachings and ecclesiastical documents is closely related to the essence of democracy. According to John Paul II, the “moral” value of democracy is not automatic, but depends on conformity to the moral law. In such a society, civil law must ensure that all members of society enjoy respect for certain fundamental rights which innately belong to the person. First and fundamental among these is the inviolable right to life of every human being from the moment of conception.

The article touches the problem of how to valuate such specific goods as human health and life. The study provides a brief review of estimation methods stressing the fact that monetary valuation does not discredit the inestimable value of human existence. The monetary indicators can be used in decision processes in health care and environmental protection sectors. Taking into account the first Polish experiences in valuation of statistical life, results from other countries and trends in the development of valuation methods, some directions for future research in this field have been outlined.

The Reconstructionist category of holiness, reflecting the essence of God in traditional Judaism, is a challenge both to contemporary Jewish thought and to theological thought in general. This paper attempts to explain why and how Mordecai Kaplan - the forerunner of the most liberal trend in Judaism - embarked on a reconstruction of the biblical concept of holiness and demonstrated the consequences of his transformations. First, Kaplan’s concept of holiness is discussed, followed by his description of the notion of “sancta” as advanced by the Reconstructionists. Next, Kaplan’s understanding of holiness, which denotes the fullness of humanity rather than the essence of the personal God, as in traditional Judaism, has been presented. Thus, according to Kaplan, holiness is an anthropological and not a theological category because he understood it as a “transcendental validity” on the path to attain human self-fulfillment in this world. From the perspective of tradition, the Reconstructionist concept of holiness results in Judaism’s desacralization, which can primarily be seen in the desacralization of God, the Torah, the Chosen People, and the Sabbath. Even allowing for Judaism’s diversity of views and positions, Kaplan’s concept of holiness is truly revolutionary in modern Jewish thought.

„Jakość życia” stała się w ciągu ostatnich kilkudziesięciu lat istotną kategorią teoretyczną (filozoficzną, socjologiczną) jak i polityczną. Stwarza to potrzebę wszechstronnych badań nad tą kategorią.

The subject of the study is the ethical aspects of euthanasia. The framework of the article does not allow for a comprehensive and complex analysis of the issue presented in the title. In view of the above, the purpose of the article has been limited to two aspects. The first one is the clarification of terminology and an attempt to draw out the classification of euthanasia. The second one is showing the arguments that supporters and antagonists take in the ongoing debate on the subject of euthanasia. In the author’s opinion, the subject that strictly corresponds to the subject matter in the study remains the legal regulations of individual countries regarding euthanasia. This issue has been highlighted at the end of the article and may constitute a contribution to the discussion.

The analysis of the mystery of life can be helpful to overcome the current crisis of woman’s and a man’s sexual/gender identity caused by radical theses of the gender ideology. In the light of biblical anthropology we can know better the multidimensional nature of human life. The life-cycle mystery is closely linked with the process of life transmitting. The woman and man have received from God the capability and mission to transmit life. This ability inscribed in the nature of the person expresses the essential feature of their vocation as beings created in the image of God. Woman and man should to be life-giving, as God is the life-giving Creator. The negation of this life-giving aspect of human nature present in the radical theses of gender ideology places this theory in obvious contradiction to the Gospel of life. For this reason the gender ideology can be considered as a serious threat not only to individual man but to all human family.

Życie ludzkie rozumiane jako kompleks różnorodnych procesów (biologicznych, psychicznych, społecznych itp.) wymaga analizy wykraczającej poza obszar biologii i innych nauk szczegółowych; wymaga –analizy filozoficznej.

Human life construed as a complex of various processes (biological, psychological, social etc.) calls for analysis going beyond domains of biology and other sciences; it calls for philosophical analysis. For the branch of philosophy studying man (philosophical anthropology/philosophy of man) pays little attention to individual human life, the author has decided that it will be proper to introduce the term “ontology of human life” as the name of the domain of the planned here analyses. Their main goal is to deliver analytical foundations for both the axiological (in particular: ethical) and empirical (in particular: sociological) investigations on quality of life.

The presented article is the continuation of my research on Tadeusz Lewowicki’s pedagogical thought. Earlier, I focused on recognizing the concept of a human being and how it exists in T. Lewowicki’s scientific work as a pedagogical reflection. In this text, I make an attempt to embed pedagogical thoughts on a human being in the context of Tadeusz Lewowicki’s reflections on multiculturalism. My aim is to retry to recognize a human being (in the political project of multiculturalism) through questions about Conditio Humana. The context is provided by Hanna Arendt’s selected reflections on human condition as something closely (un)related to a human being and politics. The text is composed of three parts: the first introduces the issue of multiculturalism which is always a creation of a human being and politics; the second part concerns the influence of politics on “human life” (I have already used some motifs earlier, but without recalling them it is impossible to write about “human life” which in Lewowicki’s pedagogy is the condition for the emergence of a human being); the third, and the final part of the article is devoted to the need to ask questions about Conditio Humana as a pedagogical imperative of Professor Lewowicki’s project of multiculturalism.

Huge, practically uncontrolled, dynamic development of new technologies created mainly in widely understood technology is possible thanks to accumulated capital (banks), and simultaneously is a main factor of both human development as well as unfortunately it also is connected with negative effects regarding destruction of the environment. That is why for the last several years many publication in the world and also in Poland are dedicated to so-called sustainable development, in which Polish scientists' research has important role [21÷29, 32]. The authoress shows in the paper, that in introduced considerations protection of human health as an individual ant then as the community is in the exact relationship with the environment protection (ecology) and is its integral piece. The environment protection is prophylaxis, environment engineering is a diagnosis and improvement of the environment quality and that requires financial funds and protections - that is economy of the environment and the good friendly law concerning the environment protection is necessary (regulations - laws, decrees, controls, fines). So there is analogy to prophylaxis and treatment of human being in medicine. All mentioned above creates certain compact entirety in the reference to sustainable development - as the road to the human prosperity, all the time considering his health as an individual and as a community in parametric correlation with the environment protection (ecology). Unfortunately the drive for prosperity both of an individual and a community exposes on diseases, which are based on the weak psychical immunity (various for various people) - weak psyche is based on small nervous resistance in stress situations. This, in the turn, reduces the immunity of the organism on diseases -particularlythose which become the social plague and which were described (bulimia, diabetes and cancer diseases); first two also on the basis of own sometimes many years' investigations and observations of Authoresses, described from the psychological side.

The system of human activity, which is established by genetics and regulated by outer and inner factors, is associated with many characteristics which maintain the body in the best condition and ensure appropriate life quality. Objective. To evaluate of life quality among male shift-workers. Methods: Research based on a self-devised questionnaire, conducted among 700 shift-workers, followed by statistical analysis of the results. Results. Nearly a half of respondents (43.00%) reported that shift-work influences the quality of their family life. Remarkably, such an opinion was often stated by people with children (46.01%) p<0.05, the divorced (58.22%), married people (44.74%) and bachelors (25.33%), respectively. Fathers usually indicated lack of contact with their family as well as irregular consumption of meals (66.91%). Almost every third respondent noted that their shift type of work negatively influence their sexual life (31.14%). Conclusions. It was shown that shift-work negatively influences the respondents’ life quality in the form of deterioration of the quality of family life; the respondents, regardless of marital status, age and having children, most often complained about the lack of contact with the family and irregular eating with them; negative influence on sexual life, which was the case in one-third of respondents. In order to encourage healthy behaviour and increase the quality of life of people performing shift-work, training and programmes should be introduced. These would help shift- workers to adjust their work time to their family and social life.

The aim of this work was to show what effect biotechnology can have on the quality of human life, and on the condition of the natural environment. A number of biotechnological processes have been analyzed that can significantly improve the quality of human life, while at the same time caring for the natural environment. The prospects for the development of these processes on the global and Polish market were also analyzed. As it turned out, some of the process analyzed need further refinement to be implemented on a global scale, while others may be successfully implemented in the coming years, contributing to the improvement of the quality of such aspects of human life high-quality food products, health protection and good public health. Biotechnological processes may also have wide application in the protection and remediation of the natural environment.

This article presents the existence in human life of the proximate dimension, which constitutes a distinctive space. The author proves that a complete model of the dimensions in which individuals and collectives exist must include a fifth dimension. Symbolically named the open, primary or archetypal dimension, it complements the four dimensions already distinguished: public, social, private and intimate.

The contemporary man, and perhaps especially Christian, feels himself torn in to direction. On the one hand, he wants to be a good Christian, and he is moved in the direction of worship, adoration and faith in Christ. On the other hand, he believes in man and man’s eff ort to build up the world, in human progress, in diff erent philosophy and political conception, in human potential to build the future. Both of these directions seem good and deserving of all his eff ort, but they seem to be two diff erent directions. There is an apparent conflict between the upward impulse of faith, worship, adoration and the forward in the direction of faith only in man, faith in the liberally world, faith in human progress, faith in economy and political philosophy. This apparent conflict between man’s upward impulse toward God and his forward impulse toward progress results in a spiritual dualism. Therefore a man in our time will better know himself and reality of the progress of the world in the authentic value of our civilization too. On the way of renovation of his life in the faith’s dimension, has a man the possibility to find the motivation to live in the new light of God’s love.

Psalm 90 stands at a critical juncture in the overall scheme of the Psalter. It is the first psalm in the small collection of Ps 90–106 which constitutes Book IV of the Psalter. This song, which begins as a mourning cry, then rises to an angry complaint, and seems to conclude in a desperate resignation, at the end arrives at a breadth and depth of meditation on the coherence of divine actions and the corresponding human reaction. The Hebrew verb turn/return occurs three times in Psalm 90. It is the verb used in the prophetic literature to call on the people to return to their God. In Ps 90:3 God is pictured as (re)turning humans to the dust whence they came by ordering, “Return, children of mankind!”. Surprisingly, however, in the v.13, which constitutes the turning-point of the entire psalm, the psalmist calls on YHWH to “repent” and to show a change of heart. God is asked to be mindful of the fact that humans flourish for but a morning and they fade by evening (vv. 5-6). The author beseeches that the covenant loyalty (Hesed ) of YHWH might satisfy his servants in the morning, so that rejoicing and gladness may follow for a new lifetime. In this context, the references to God’s “work” and to his “glorious power” (v. 16) seem to take on a double meaning. The appeal is not only for a restoration of the nation of Israel by powerful acts of divine intervention. The appeal is, perhaps even more, for YHWH to show his work, the work of compassion (v. 13), and to make his power known by his covenant loyalty (v. 14) and favor (v. 17).

Man remains a mystery. Despite the discoveries in the field of genetics, the beginnings of his life are also a secret. Facing this mystery and contrary to all ideologies, the Catholic Church attempts to create a model of mentality that favours life. It also makes its contribution to building a culture of life, so that affirmation of personal dignity of man became a foundation to all references in both medicine and social life. Nowadays, such actions require a consensus of opinions of all Christians as to the beginnings of human life. Its purpose is not so much the defence of moral principles as long as the defence of fundamental rights and dignity of man – from the very moment of his existence – which are increasily at risk today.
