There are ambiguous results about the involvement of Helicobacter species in production of hepatobiliary diseases. is study was aimed to investigate any possible association between the presences of Helicobacter spp., their genotypes and occurrence of di"erent biliary diseases. Cultures of 102 bile samples for Helicobacter spp. did not show any growth, but the presence of Helicobacter genus specific DNA (16s rRNA gene) was detected in 3.92% of them. No significant association was found between development of the diseases and presence of the bacteria. All the Helicobacter genus positive samples belonged to H. pylori species and showed vacA+ (s1/m2), cagA– genotypes.

Vibrio cholerae, the causative agent of Asiatic cholera, is a gram-negative motile bacterial species acquired via oral ingestion of contaminated food or water sources. Cholera has spread from the Indian subcontinent where it is endemic to involve nearly the whole world seven times during the past 185 years. V. cholerae serogroup O1, biotype El Tor, has moved from Asia to cause pandemic disease in Africa and South America during the past 35 years. A new serogroup, O139, appeared in south Asia in 1992, has become endemic there, and threatens to start the next pandemic. The facultative human pathogen V. cholerae represents a paradigm that evolved from environmental non-pathogenic strains by acquisition of virulence genes. The major virulence factors of V. cholerae, cholera toxin (CTX) encoded by the ctxAB genes residing in the genome of filamentous lysogenic bacteriophage (CTXɸ) and toxin coregulated pilus (TCP) encoded by vibrio pathogenicity island (VPI). CTX, a potent stimulator of adenylate cyclase, causes the intestine to secrete watery fluid rich in sodium, bicarbonate, and potassium, in volumes far exceeding the intestinal absorptive capacity, by ADP-ribosylation of the alpha subunit of the GTP-binding protein. Thus intestinal infection with V. cholerae results in the loss of large volumes of watery stool, leading to severe and rapidly progressing dehydration and shock. Without adequate and appropriate rehydration therapy, severe cholera kills about half of affected individuals. Today, cholera still remains a burden mainly for underdeveloped countries, which cannot afford to establish or to maintain necessary hygienic and medical facilities. During the last three decades, intensive research has been undertaken to unravel the virulence properties and to study the epidemiology of this significant human pathogen. This review provides an overview of the role of CTX in the occurrence of this disease in humans.

We investigated children aged 2-5, who had gone adenoidectomy for recurrent and/or persistent symptoms of upper respiratory tract infections for prevalence of pneumococci in adenoid tissue. Serotypes and antibiotic resistance patterns of the isolated pneumococci were determined and also risk factors of pneumococcal colonization were defined. S. pneumoniae colonization in adenoids was found in 62 (60.2%) children. Serotypes belonged to 10-valent and 13-valent pneumococcal conjugated vaccines (PCVs) constituted 56.1% and 68.2% of the isolates, respectively. Decreased susceptibility to penicillin was found in 45.5% of isolates; pneumococci were resistant to co-trimoxazole (62.1%), tetracycline (43.9%), erythromycin (54.5%), clindamycin (54.5%) and chloramphenicol (31.8%). Multidrug resistant S. pneumoniae comprised 57.6% of the isolates. Antibiotic resistant pneumococci were mostly distributed among serotypes belonged to 10-valent and 13-valent PCVs. Good vaccine coverage among the isolated pneumococci confirmed that the introduction of PCVs in the national immunization programme may reduce the pool of resistant and multidrug resistant pneumococci in a community.

Enterococcus faecalis plays a significant role in hospital-acquired infections (HAIs), and combination of penicillin with aminoglycoside is important in therapy of invasive HAIs. Penicillin resistance in this organism is due to modification of the drug target, penicillin-binding protein (PBP5), its overproduction and expression of β-lactamase. Although rare, this phenotype is often associated with multi-resistant high-risk enterococcal clonal complexes (HiRECCs), such as CC2 and CC9 which may promote its spread in the near future.

The occurrence of yeast-like fungi in the most important infection portals of the respiratory system in 200 randomly chosen students of biology and veterinary medicine was examined. The students come into direct contact with plants and animals that may be colonised by fungi belonging to various systematic groups. nine species of yeast-like fungi, including 7 species determined in the biologists, were recorded in the subjects. Candida tropicalisand C.albicanswere the most frequently isolated fungi. The greatest number of fungi was isolated from the oral cavity (124 isolates), fewer from the throat (79 isolates), and the smallest number from the nose (8 isolates). Fungi occurred more frequently in autumn and slightly less frequently in spring, and were isolated more frequently from women than from men.

Najczęściej izolowano: Candida tropicalis(83 izolaty) i Candida albicans (77 izolatów). Najwięcej grzybów wyizolowano z jamy ustnej (124 izolaty), mniej z gardła (79), najmniej z nosa (8). Grzyby częściej występowały jesienią, nieco rzadziej wiosną, u kobiet niż u mężczyzn. Ogółem najwyższy odsetek wyników dodatnich odnotowano u osób zgłaszających nadużywanie kawy (30%), palących papierosy (63,6%) i nadużywających alkoholu (51,7%).

There is a 10–30% prevalence of HP infection in the general pediatric population in Poland. This study aimed to determine its prevalence in T1DM children in Upper Silesia, Poland and estimate its influence on metabolic control of patients. We studied 149(82♀) children with T1DM (duration > 12 months, mean HbA1c) and 298(164♀) age-matched controls. In all cases height and weight z-scores and Cole’s index were assessed. In T1DM patients additionally glycated hemoglobin A1c and T1DM duration were analyzed. Presence of HP infection was determined using 13C-isotope-labeled urea breath test (UBT) (fasting and 30min after ingestion 75 mg of 13C urea). HP infection was present in 17 (11.4%) T1DM patients and in 49 (16.4%) controls (p > 0.05). T1DM patients presented higher values of anthropometric parameters than healthy controls (weight SDS 0.25[–0.46÷0.84] vs. –0.25[–1.06÷0.26], height SDS 0.09[–0.60÷0.69] vs. –0.31[–1.17÷0.48]and Cole’s index 103%[93÷111%] vs. 97%[86÷106%]; for all p < 0001). Within both groups – T1DM children and controls – no differences regarding sex, age and any of the anthropometric parameters were determined. T1DM duration and HbA1c showed no relationto prevalence of HP infection. Prevalence of HP infection in pediatric T1DM patients is similar to that of healthy peers and shows no relation to glycemic control.

It is justified to systematically monitor the number of those infected with Lyme disease in European countries and conduct the research on spreading of genospecies B. burgdorferi s.l. in animal reservoirs and vectors. Moreover, it is essential to take action for increasing the society’s awareness of tick-borne diseases prophylaxis. It is very important due to the observed increase in the number and activeness of ticks which leads to the increased risk of infection with spirochetes Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato and other pathogens transmitted by these vectors.

The genus Scopulariopsis is a common soil saprotroph and has been isolated from air, organic waste and also from plant, animal and human tissues. Scopulariopsis has mainly been associated in humans with superficial mycoses, but it has also been described as the cause of subcutaneous and invasive infections. The most common aetiological agent of infections in humans is Scopulariopsis brevicaulis. This species has been reported to be resistant in vitro to broad-spectrum antifungal agents available today. The aim of the study was to establish in vitro antifungal susceptibility of 35 S. brevicaulis strains against amphotericin B (AMB), flucytosine (FC), caspofungin (CAS), terbinafine (TER), ciclopirox (CIC), voriconazole (VOR), clotrimazole (CTR), miconazole (MCZ), econazole (ECO), ketoconazole (KET), itraconazole (ITR), and fluconazole (FLU). Antifungal susceptibility tests were evaluated by an agar diffusion method (Neo-Sensitabs, Rosco, Denmark). AMB, FC, CAS, ITR and FLU showed no antifungal activity against S. brevicaulis. TER, CIC, CTR, KET, VOR, ECO, and MCZ revealed inhibitory activity for S. brevicaulis, but it varied for each of the drugs. The best antifungal effect was observed for TER and CIC. All isolates had large inhibition zones for TER and CIC. CTR was also inhibitory for all tested S. brevicaulis isolates, but the diameters of inhibition zones were smaller than for TER and CIC. Nearly 89% isolates showed inhibition zones for KET and the mean diameter of the inhibition zone was comparable to CTR. The least antifungal activity exhibited VOR, ECO and MCZ. Because of the multiresistance of S. brevicaulis, infections due to this species may not respond to particular antifungal treatment and other therapeutic approaches should be considered e.g., combined therapy and/or surgery.

Przebadano 5514 (100%) osób: 3370 (61,12%) kobiet i 2144 (38,88%) mężczyzn. Dodatnie wyniki mikologiczne uzyskano u 2103 (38,14%) osób. Spośród 2475 (100%) wszystkich izolacji u kobiet i mężczyzn łącznie, na dermatofity przypadało 989 (39,96%), grzyby drożdżoidalne 975 (39,39%), a na grzyby pleśniowe 511 (20,65%) izolacji. Najliczniej izolowanymi gatunkami u wszystkich badanych były: Candida albicans (34,22%) i Trichophyton rubrum (23,68%). Wśród dermatofitów najczęściej notowano T. rubrum (59,25%), znacznie rzadziej Microsporum canis (20,53%) oraz T. mentagrophytes var. granulosum (15,87%). Wśród grzybów drożdżoidalnych zdecydowanym dominantem był C. albicans (86,87%), a wśród grzybów pleśniowych Scopulariopsis brevicaulis (13,31%). W przypadku 68,67% zakażeń identyfikację zakończono na zaliczeniu czynnika infekcyjnego do grupy grzybów pleśniowych.

In this study, a hundred Klebsiella pneumoniae strains isolated from urinary tract infections were evaluated in terms of genotyping, susceptibility to certain antibiotics and detection of extended spectrum of beta lactamase (ESBL) production. The random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD-PCR) method was used to identify the genetic differentiation of K pneumoniae isolates. A total of 26 different DNA bands ranging between 334 bp and 28033 bp were detected among the strains. It was found that 100 K. pneumoniae strains revealed 11 different RAPD profiles. Antibiotic susceptibility tests were conducted using a disc diffusion method against 16 antibiotics. Fifty-five different resistance profiles were determined among the strains. ESBL-productions of the strains were determined by the double disc synergy test (DDST) and ESBL E-test methods. ESBL production rates among the strains were found to be 55% by E-test method and 45% by DDST method. While ESBL-producing K. pneumoniae strains showed the greatest resistance to penicillin G (100%), followed by piperacillin (92.7%) and erythromycin (85.4%), the resistance rates of non ESBLproducing strains to those antibiotics were determined as 97.8%, 88.8% and 88.8%, respectively. Both groups of strains showed the highest sensitivity to meropenem. Based on the results obtained from the study, it was concluded that the detection of ESBL-producing strains by the E-test method was more sensitive than by the DDST method. Phenotypic and genotypic identification methods should be used together to detect ESBL presence. The RAPD-PCR method alone will not be adequate in the genotyping of the strains and alternative DNA-based methods should be used.

Dirofilariosis, caused by Dirofilaria immitis and D. repens, is (re-) emerging worldwide. Dogs are the main reservoirs, while human infection has recently become an important focus of interest and attention. In Argentina, canine D. immitis infection has been described in eastern and northern subtropical and temperate humid regions, but never reported in mid-western arid regions so far. In this research note we report for the first time the occurrence of autochthonous human and canine D. immitis infection in the region.

The filarial nematode Dirofilaria repens is currently considered to be one of the most extensively spreading human and animal parasites in Europe. In Ukraine, reporting cases of dirofilariasis has been mandatory since 1975, and the disease was included in the national surveillance system for notifiable diseases. Up until December 31st 2012, a total of 1533 cases have been registered, with 1465 cases occurring within the previous 16 years. Most of the cases of dirofilariasis were registered in 6 regions: Kyiv, and the Donetsk, Zaporizhzhya, Dnipropetrovsk, Kherson and Chernihiv oblasts. In the years 1997–2002 the highest incidence rate was noted in the Kherson oblast in the south of the country (9.79 per 100 000 people), and the lowest in western Ukraine (0.07–1.68 per 100 000 people). D. repens infections were registered in all oblasts. Parasitic lesions were most often located in the head, the subconjunctival tissue and around the eyes. D. repens lesions were also found in the limbs, torso, male sexual organs, and female mammary glands. Dirofilariasis was diagnosed in persons aged from 11 months to 90 years old, most often among people between 21–40 years of age. Most patients had only one parasitic skin lesion; the majority of isolated nematodes were female. The results of our analysis point to a constant increase in D. repens dirofilariasis incidence in humans in Ukraine. Despite educational efforts, infections have become more frequent and the territory in which the disease occurs has enlarged to encompass the whole of Ukraine. Nevertheless, the Ukrainian sanitary-epidemiological services managed to achieve some measure of success, e.g. by creating a registration system for D. repens infections and establishing proper diagnostics for the disease.
