In 1996, Days of European Heritage, organised under the auspices of the Council of Europe since 1991, were celebrated in Warsaw under the motto: Warsaw — a Residential Town”, owing to the four hundredth anniversary of the city. The organiser of the Warsaw Heritage Days was traditionally the Society for the Protection of Historical Monuments which, by presenting historical royal residences and former magnate residences, wished to recall that before the capital of Mazovia became a Polish metropolis in the full meaning of this term, for many years it filled the function of a residential town. Days of European Heritage were preceded by a conference held on 20 September in the seat of the Society for the Protection of Historical Monuments, attended by Prof. Andrzej Tomaszewski, General Conservator of Historical Monuments, and Małgorzata Willman, M.A., coordinator of the celebrations. A discussion on „Royal Residences in Warsaw — Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow” was organised on 21 September in the John III Great Banquet Hall in Wilanow Palace. The meeting, with the participation of numerous renowned experts on the history of the architecture, art and town planning of Warsaw, conservators of historical monuments, experts on museum studies, current hosts of royal residences — castles and palaces, members of societies dealing in the protection and conservation of historical monuments, as well as popularisers of the historical heritage of the capital, was inaugurated by a paper on the royal residences in Warsaw, given by Prof. Jerzy Lileyko; owing to its significant merits, we cite the text in its entirety.
