This study deals with problems of the typology of place names, the geography of place names as well as the stratigraphy of place names. They constitute the methodological basis for creating an atlas of place names. The entirety of the place names is divided into 7 sub-classes and into 21 types of place names. These can be assigned to specific time periods (strata). The latter will determine the sequence of maps in the atlas. The purpose of the atlas is to show not only the geographical distribution of place names, but also to provide historical cognizance, particularly with regard to the history of settlements.

Studie se zabývá problematikou typologie, geografie a stratigrafie toponym. Jedná se o základní přístupy při vytváření atlasu toponym. Toponyma jsou rozdělena do 7 podtříd a 21 toponymických typů. Ty se dají přiřadit k určitým časovým vrstvám (strata). Ty poslední, tj. nejmladší vrstvy by měly být určující pro pořadí map v atlasu. Atlas nemá ukazovat pouze distribuci toponym v geografickém prostoru, ale také přinášet historické poznatky, obzvláště takové, které souvisí s vývojem osídlení.

This article presents the relationship between two monumental series developed at the Institute of History of the Polish Academy of Sciences – the Historical Atlas of Poland and the Historical-Geographical Dictionary of the Polish Lands in the Middle Ages. From this perspective, the author presents the idea of their development, conceptual assumptions and the history of institutional relations. A separate part is devoted to analysing the use of the Atlas in the compilation of the Dictionary, focusing on the volumes devoted to Mazovia.

Artykuł przedstawia związki między dwiema pomnikowymi seriami opracowywanymi w Instytucie Historii Polskiej Akademii Nauk – Atlasem historycznym Polski i Słownikiem historyczno-geograficznym ziem polskich w średniowieczu. Pod tym kątem omówiono ideę ich powstania, założenia koncepcyjne oraz dzieje powiązań instytucjonalnych. Odrębną część poświęcono analizie wykorzystania Atlasu w opracowywaniu Słownika, koncentrując się na tomach dotyczących Mazowsza.
