A study was carried out to determine the histopathology of the liver in cattle slaughtered in Port Harcourt Abattoir, River State, Nigeria, between October to December 2016, and to assess the prevalence of fascioliasis. In undertaking this, faeces were collected and processed using the formal ether concentration technique, while tissue samples for both infected and non-infected livers were collected for proper histopathological procedures. Herein, the livers of slaughtered cattle were examined through visualization, palpation and incision. The outcome of our work showed that out of the 712 randomly sampled cattle, 38 (5.34%) were infected. Of these, 571 were males with an infection rate of 32 (5.60%), while 141 were females with infection rate of 6 (4.25%). Based on breed, infection rates were 12 (4.35%), and 26 (6.02%) for breeds of Sokoto Gudali and Red Bororo, respectively. No infection was recorded in the White Fulani breed. There was no statistically significant association between infection and breed and between infection and sex of the animals sampled. In our histopathology studies of non-infected and infected livers, microscopically, the non-infected liver tissue cells, sinusoids, bile duct and portal tract were all normal. Our results also showed that there were no abnormal changes in the nucleus and the colour of the tissue. However, infected liver tissue appeared pale in colour and greatly swollen, indicating fibrosis. In addition, there was dilation in the central vein and debris and large patches scattered over the parietal surface. Moreover, the pipe stem appearance of the liver was evident. Such histopathological changes indicate tissue damage and this results in economic losses in rearing and in butchering in animals, and in harm to human health. Proper abattoir inspection and care by veterinary workers is therefore required to ensure that heavily damaged livers are not sold for public consumption.

Introduction: Thyroid swellings are one of the most common swellings in the neck. They pose a major problem in developing countries like India, considering the high endemicity for iodine deficiency disorders. Thyroid gland is affected in many conditions. Out of these, majority are benign while less than 5% are malignant. Multiple noninvasive and invasive diagnostic tests are available for the diagnosis of thyroid swelling. However, at present, FNAC is considered the gold standard investigation. Despite the high sensitivity and specificity, FNAC has its limitations. Histopathological examination of surgically excised thyroid swelling is the confirmatory gold standard to determine the pathology of the thyroid gland. Material and method: This prospective and observational study was conducted in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology (ENT) in collaboration with the Department of Pathology in a tertiary care hospital and medical school. A total of seventy patients were included. Results: The diagnosis on FNAC was correlated with histopathology. Statistical analysis showed FNAC had a sensitivity of 83.3%, specificity of 100%, positive predictive value of 100%, negative predictive value of 96.7%. However, the overall accuracy in this study was determined to be 95.71%. Results were found to be statistically significant (P < 0.05). Conclusions: The diagnostic role of FNAC in thyroid lesions is of utmost importance in making preoperative diagnosis. FNAC was found to be highly sensitive and specific for diagnosing thyroid lesions but the final HPE is considered as a gold standard.

Introduction: Malignant mixed tumor (MMT) is an exceedingly rare cutaneous adnexal carcinoma with a significant risk for aggressive behavior and a propensity for metastasis. This tumor occurs in a wide age range and is twice as common in woman than in men. MMT shows a predilection for the trunk and the extremist’s foremost hands and feet. MMT may be confused clinically with many benign and malignant lesions. Therefore the histopathological and immunohistochemical examination is required for the correct diagnosis and treatment. Purpose: To present a case of MMT localized in the left toe with a special attention focused on its histopathology and differential diagnosis. Case presentation: A 56-year-old female was admitted with a nodular lesion on the left toe. A painless mass had been presented for one year with a significant increase in size within the past three month. The patient underwent wide surgical excision. Histopathologically for the lesion was diagnosed it as a malignant mixed tumor. Immunohistochemical examination revealed positive reaction for cytokeratin AE1/AE3/PCK26, vimentin and S-100. Histochemical reaction for PAS in the chondromyxoid tumor stroma was negative. Conclusion: Correct histopathological diagnosis and complete excision with wide disease-free margins before metastasis result in MMT free survival.

Introduction: A variety of benign and malignant tumours involving the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses (PNS) are commonly encountered in clinical practice. The presenting features and symptomatology of all sinonasal masses are similar. It is impossible to determine clinically what pathology lies underneath. So a detailed history, clinical examination, proper imaging, and thorough histopathologic evaluation are essential to reach a diagnosis. Objectives The purpose of this study was to classify various types of Benign and malignant lesions presenting as nasal and paranasal mass and characterize their clinico-pathological profile in a tertiary care center. Materials and Methods: This was a prospective study where 120 cases of nasal and paranasal masses were included over a period of 24 months (sep 2013-sep 2015) Clinico-pathological study was carried out in these cases. A provisional diagnosis was made after clinical assessment and radiologic investigations, but final diagnosis was made after histopathologic examination. Results: The number of benign lesions were more than the malignant lesion, 66.66% versus 33.33% respectively. All age groups were involved and the mean age of presentation was benign tumours 29.5 years and malignant tumours 50.25 years. Male to Female ratio was 3:1 for benign tumours and 1.7:1 for malignant tumours. In our study, among benign lesions the occurrence of Angiofibroma was highest seen in 37.5% cases. In malignant lesions, Squamous cell carcinoma was most common seen in 67.5% cases. Carcinoma nasal cavity was the commonest malignant lesion seen in 70% cases. Nasal obstruction was the most common (91.6%) presenting complaint followed by intermittent epistaxis (69.16%) and nasal discharge (58.3%). Conclusion: We concluded that for proper evaluation of a sinonasal mass, clinical, radiologic, and histopathologic evaluation should be carried out conjointly in all the cases. Histopathology always gives a confirmatory diagnosis but in few cases immuno-histocytochemistry becomes the ultimate diagnostic technique for correct and timely intervention.

Clinical, histopathological and statistical analyses of the removed parotid gland tumours were performed. Results and discussion: A significant increase in the incidence of benign tumours, especially mixed and Warthin tumours, was demonstrated. There was no significant increase in the number of malignant tumours over the analysed period of time.

Introduction. Primary extrahepatic hydatid cysts are rare, and primary splenic hydatid cysts even rarer. Splenic hydatidosis constitutes 2% to 3.5% of all hydatid cysts. Aim. To present a case report of splenic hydatidosis with abdominal pain. Description of the case. We report here a case of isolated splenic hydatid cysts in a 23 year old female, who presented with dull dragging pain in the left hypochondrium. Diagnosis was made on computed tomography imaging of the abdomen and microscopic examination of the laminated hydatid cyst wall and supplemented with positive enzyme linked immunosorbent assay for hydatid antibodies. Conclusion. The incidence of splenic involvement by hydatid cysts is very low. Man is an accidental intermediate host, as entry of the larval forms into humans represents an end stage in its life cycle. Until recently the gold standard treatment for splenic hydatidosis was splenectomy, as medical therapy seems to be ineffective. However, the last two decades have shown a tendency towards splenic conservative surgery in suitable cases, to reduce opportunistic post splenectomy infection.

Introduction: Cases of myocarditis in people who were vaccinated against COVID-19 have been reported in the recent years. Nevertheless, the histopathological features and the pathomechanisms in these cases are still unclear. Hence, a scoping review of existing literature was performed to discover the histopathological features of myocarditis induced by the above-mentioned vaccine. Material and Methods: A search was performed in the PubMed, Scopus and EMBASE databases to retrieve the relevant records, involving analyses of biopsy and autopsy specimens. Baseline characteristics of the patients and the histopathological characteristics of the respective specimens were extracted and recorded. Results: Overall, 24 case reports and case series (involving a total of 54 patients) were included in this scoping review. The following signs of inflammation were present in the specimens: lymphocyte infiltration (64.8%), eosinophilic infiltration (29.6%), neutrophil infiltration (3.7%) and giant-cell formation (1.9%). Other features included myocardial tissue necrosis (20.4%), the presence of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein (16.7%) and microthrombosis (3.7%). Conclusions: The histopathological characteristics of SARS-CoV-2 vaccine-induced myocarditis were heterogenous, the only common characteristic was the presence of lymphocyte infiltration in more than half of the cases. Studies of unreported past cases may provide further insights into the topic.

As many as 70-85% of laryngeal and laryngopharyngeal cancers are diagnosed at a high staging, comprising a great diagnostic and therapeutic challenge with influence on poor treatment results. Patients with advanced lesions, that is, stages III and IV, qualify for primary surgical treatment or chemoradiotherapy, depending on the clinical stage, poor prognostic factors and preferences of the patient. Reliable qualifications standards for treatment that would allow to establish homogenous therapeutic recommendations and improvement of treatment results in the group of patients have not yet been developed.

Objective: The objective of this study was to demonstrate the histological diversity of endometriosis-associated ovarian carcinoma. Material and methods: Using record linkage techniques, we have conducted histopathological assessment in patients with endometriosis-associated ovarian cancer who received surgical treatment between 2004–2010 in the Oncology Centre in Bydgoszcz. Endometriosis and cervical carcinoma were confirmed in one tissue specimen in 62 patients. Results: Endometriosis seemed to promote the development of specific histologic types of ovarian cancer. Of 62 subjects, 53.22% (33/62) had endometrioid adenocarcinoma, 25.8% (16/62) had clear-cell carcinoma, 19.35% (12/62) had serous adenocarcinoma, and 1.61% (1/62) had mucinous adenocarcinoma. Our results support the hypothesis that coexistent endometriosis is more often associated with endometrioid and clear-cell carcinomas than other histologic subtypes as well as that clear-cell variant is the most common cancer developing in the abdominal wall scar from a previous laparotomy. Among patients with endometriosis-associated ovarian carcinoma in the abdominal scar, three (75%) had clear-cell carcinoma and one had papillary serous adenocarcinoma. Conclusions: According to Sampson’s criteria, endometrioid carcinoma of the ovary was the most common histological diagnosis in patients with endometriosis-associated ovarian carcinoma. The clear-cell variant of cancer was the most common type in patients with endometriosis-associated ovarian carcinoma in the abdominal scar after laparotomy.

Cel: Celem pracy jest prezentacja zróżnicowania histopatologicznego raków jajnika współistniejących z endometriozą. Materiał i metody: Korzystając ze szpitalnej bazy danych, przeanalizowaliśmy wyniki histopatologiczne pacjentek z rakiem jajnika, które były operowane między 2004 a 2010 rokiem w Centrum Onkologii w Bydgoszczy. U 62 chorych potwierdziliśmy endometriozę i raka jajnika w jednym preparacie tkankowym. Wyniki: Wydaje się, iż endometrioza wpływa na rozwój specyficznych typów histopatologicznych raków jajnika. Spośród 62 pacjentek 53,22% (33 przypadki) miało raka endometrioidalnego, 25,8% (16) – raka jasnokomórkowego, 19,35% (12) – raka surowiczego, a 1,61% (1) – raka śluzowego. Nasze wyniki potwierdzają tezę, że endometrioza może promować rozwój określonych typów histopatologicznych raka jajnika. Odnotowaliśmy częstsze występowanie raka endometrioidalnego i jasnokomórkowego niż innych podtypów raka jajnika, a także przewagę raka jasnokomórkowego wśród raków powstałych w bliźnie po laparotomii. W grupie pacjentek z rakiem w bliźnie trzy (75%) miały raka jasnokomórkowego, a jedna – surowiczego. Podsumowanie: Jeśli przyjąć klasyczne kryteria Sampsona, typ endometrialny był najczęstszym rozpoznaniem histopatologicznym u pacjentek z rakiem jajnika, któremu towarzyszyła endometrioza. Typ jasnokomórkowy okazał się zaś najczęstszym rozpoznaniem wśród chorych z rakiem, któremu towarzyszyła endometrioza w bliźnie po laparotomii.

Samples of morbid bovine tissues obtained from slaughterhouse were submitted to histopathological examination. Neoplastic growth within the peripheral nerves was observed microscopically, with the presence of Antoni A and Antoni B patterns, and sporadically Verocay bodies. Additionally, immunohistochemical examination of the sections revealed positive reaction to vimentine, neuron specific enolase, protein S100, and glial fibrillary acidic protein. The results indicate that the examined neoplasms may belong to the type of benign peripheral nerve sheath tumours called schwannoma.

In some legal proceedings, the species identification of animal on the basis of fragments of biological material is extremely difficult. This applies both to closely-related and to distant species characterized by similar morphological features. In such circumstances, methods of molecular biology are used, whose evidential value is definitely not in doubt. Histopathological scraps may also have to be used for identifying tests. The aim of the present study was to verify the possibility of using DNA analysis in determining the species of animals on the basis of biological material contained in archival histopathological samples. The examined material consisted of twenty-eight histopathological preparations stained with hematoxylin and eosin. The samples had been prepared from the liver, kidney, spleen, and skeletal muscles. Their age varied from one to seventeen years. Specimens (from twelve species) were identified by inputting sequences in the Barcode of Life Database species identification tool on the basis of the similarity percentage figure from the BOLD report. It was found that genetic tests can effectively identify animal species through the analysis of biological material from histopathological samples.

Accumulation of metals (Fe, Zn, Cu, Mn, Pb, Cd and Ni) in the muscles and gills of Oreochromis niloticus, Oreochromis aureus and Tilapia zillii was assessed based on seven locations in the Qahr El-Bahr area in Lake Al-Manzalah. The average accumulation of metals was in the following order: Tilapia zillii > Oreochromis aureus > Oreochromis niloticus. To determine the risk of fish consumption, the estimated daily intake, carcinogenic, non-carcinogenic and relative risk indices were calculated. The results indicate that the intake of individual metals through the consumption of fish is almost safe for human health, whereas the intake of combined metals poses a high potential health risk to consumers. Assessment of carcinogenic risk of Cd and Ni from the consumption of tilapia species indicates that consumers are at risk of cancer. The contribution of Pb and Cd to the overall relative risk index ranged from 34% to 41%. Of the three species studied, Oreochromis niloticus is relatively safe for consumption as it poses the least health hazard, while Tilapia zillii is more predisposed to accumulate metals in its tissues. Histopathological changes were observed in the muscles, gills and liver of Oreochromis niloticus as a result of heavy metal accumulation in these organs.

The aim of this paper is to describe the case of a 10-year-old Siberian husky with a right upper lip neoplastic tumour and a metastasis to a submandibular lymph node. Histopathological examination with application of immunohistochemistry confirmed neoplastic outgrowth with an inflammatory form of histiocytoma and a high proliferative potential. Local progression of the neoplastic disease occurred despite the removal of the primary tumour and neoplastically infiltrated lymph node.
