Diabetes mellitus is a major endocrine disorder affecting nearly 10% of the population worldwide and a key issue of concern. There is a lot of interest in plant preparations that will allow to control diabetes with less side effects compared to a conventional antidiabetic drug. Such plants include Gymnema sylvestre, traditionally used in the Ayurvedic medicine system. G. sylvestre supplementation is effective in improving glycemic control and reducing lipid levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. It exhibits a wide range of other therapeutic effects (including anti-arthritis, immunostimulatory, antimicrobial and hepatoprotective effects). The gymnemic acids present in G. sylvestre block the absorption of carbohydrates in the intestine, thus preventing the consumption of "empty calories" that may contribute to obesity. Supplementation with Gymnema sylvestre can be an important part of the diet of people with diabetes as well as those in the high-risk group.
