A research into a syntactic pattern recognition model based on ( edNLC) graph grammars (introduced and investigated in Janssens and Rozenberg Inform. Sci. 20 (1980), 191-216, and Janssens, Rozenberg and Verraedt Comp. Vis. Graph. Image Process. 18 (1982), 279-304) has resulted in defining the efficient, O(n2), parsing schemes for the ETPL(k) subclass of these grammars and applying it for scene analysis, CAD/CAM object analysis and constructing AI systems (Flasiński Patt. Recogn. 21 (1988), 623-629, Flasiński Comp. Vis. Graph. Image Process. 47 (1989), 1-21, Flasiński Patt. Recogn. 26 (1993), 1-16, Flasiński Comp. Aided-Des. 27 (1995), 403-433, Flasiński Theor. Comp. Sci. 201 (1998), 189-231). In the paper the grammatical inference method for the parsable ETPL(k) graph grammars is defined, completing the development of this syntactic pattern recognition model.

The grammatical inference problem is solved for the class of context-free languages. A context-free language is supposed to be given by means of all its strings. Considering all strings of length bounded by k, context-free grammars G(j,k) with 1 < j < k are constructed. A continual increasing of the index k leads to an infinite sequence. It is proved that G(j,k) are equivalent for all j > j(o), k > k(o) with some positive integers j(o), k(o). Moreover, the equivalences among these grammars can be recognized on the basis of involved nonterminals and productions only.

Restarting automata were introduced as a model for analysis by reduction, which is a linguistically motivated method for checking correctness of a sentence. We propose a new restricted version of restarting automata called clearing restarting automata with a very simple definition but simultaneously with interesting properties with respect to their possible applications. The new model can be learned very efficiently from positive examples and its stronger version can be used to learn effectively a large class of languages. We relate the class of languages recognized by clearing restarting automata to the Chomsky hierarchy.

The grammatical inference problem is solved for a class of languages which can be generated by pure grammars with non-shortening productions. Necessary and sufficient condition for determination whether a language belongs to this class is formulated and proved. Finally, an algorithm for assigning a pure grammar to any language from the class is described.
