The paper discusses the issue of the use of lexicographic works in the process of linguistic interpretation, which causes multiple problems in the judicial practice. Omitting positive examples, we show judgements in which the decision can be considered argumentatively unsatisfactory in the area of linguistic interpretation. We hope that the presented material will help linguists and authors of Polish dictionaries better understand how their work is utilized by other users of Polish. Simultaneously, we indicate moments where judicial errors result not only from lack of knowledge or negligence on the part of the interpreters, but also from defects and inconsistencies in the results of linguistic work (e.g. from inadequate definitions or insufficient contrast between definitions of related lexemes), and insufficient familiarization of the extra-linguistic milieu with methodologically newer dictionaries and language corpora.

The article discusses problems related to proper name entries in Polish Academy of Sciences Great Dictionary of Polish. The dictionary has been under construction since 2007 and is available at the following URL: http://wsjp.pl. The first part of the text is devoted to the issue of reasonableness of including proper names in general dictionaries. Critical opinions on the issue raised in the past are recalled and discussed. What follows is a presentation on how the description of proper names, especially geographical names and their derivatives, was envisaged in the early stages of works on the aforementioned dictionary. This vision is then compared with the actual state of being in the current version of the dictionary from 2020. In the final part, further prospects of describing proper names in Polish Academy of Sciences Great Dictionary of Polish are presented.

Artykuł omawia problemy dotyczące opisu naw własnych w Wielkim słowniku języka polskiego PAN, który opracowywany jest od 2007 roku i publikowany w Internecie pod adresem http://wsjp.pl . Pierwsza część tekstu jest poświęcona kwestii celowości notowania nazw własnych w słownikach ogólnych języka naturalnego (przypomniano negatywne opinie na ten temat), następnie przedstawiono projekt opisu nazw własnych w wymienionym słowniku (przede wszystkim nazwy geograficzne z ich derywatami), pochodzący z początkowego etapu prac nad nim i porównano ze stanem realizacji aktualnym w roku 2020. W części końcowej przedstawiono dalsze perspektywy opisu nazw własnych w Wielkim słowniku języka polskiego PAN.

The article briefly presents the history of work on the Polish Academy of Sciences Great Dictionary of Polish (pol. Wielki słownik języka polskiego PAN), its status in April 2022, indicating the important features of the dictionary as a source of knowledge about the contemporary Polish language, and also the plans of the lexicographic team for the years to come.

W artykule zwięźle przedstawiono historię prac nad Wielkim słownikiem języka polskiego PAN, omówiono ich stan w kwietniu 2022 roku, wskazując istotne cechy słownika jako źródła wiedzy o współczesnym języku polskim oraz przedstawiono plany zespołu leksykograficznego na dalsze lata.
