The epithet formosus, almost absent from Latin poetry before Virgil, is frequently employed in the Bucolics. This paper analyses some occurrences and some verse patterns in which it appears and compares Virgil’s use with instances in Propertius to suggest that formosus was a word associated with Gallus and hence used by Virgil in the context of a literary dialogue with him.
