The investigation concerned the effect of two soil - forming factors, i.e. vegetal cover (pioneer pine stands) and time on eutrophic postagricultural brown soils occurring in the Jaworzyna Krynicka range (Beskid Sądecki Mts). The study included 45 soil stations, in this number 20 profiles in pioneer pine stands in the age classes Ib - 11-20, IIa - 21-30, IIb - 31-40, and III - 45-50 years (5 profiles in each age class), 20 profiles in agricultural soils neighbouring upon the pine stands, and for comparison, 5 profiles located in fir stands 80-100- year-old. The thickness of genetic layers, depth of occurrence of gleyed horizons, and the biological depth and density of soils were determined in the field, the surface water runoff being measured in conditions of a simulated storm rainfall. The grain composition of soils, specific and voluminal densities, total porosily, the structure of pores, and the air permeability of soils were determined in laboratory conditions (Tables 1, 2, Figs 1-4). The determination of phisical properties was conducted using methods applied in pedology. It was found that [he gradual changes in morphology and physical properties effected by the pioneer pine stands approximated the characteristics of postagricultural soils to forest soils occurring under the community of a Dentario gladulosae-Fagetum abietetosum subassociation. The process of reconstruction of pioneer pine stands may begin when under the litter an Ail horizon of humus accumulation reaches the thickness of 2-3 cm. This occurs at the stand age of 21-25 years.

The purpose of the research was to study some of the features of silver birch, in its habitat conditions, as a naturally occurring pioneer crop appearing in open spaces formed by the disintegration of the Norway spruce monocultures in the Silesian Beskid Mountains. On the three research plots the occurrence of the young natural regeneration and understorey of 13 species of trees and shrubs was determined. On the basis of the number of specimens it was found that the most dominant species in the whole area was Norway spruce (56-64%). Birch accounted for 14-16%, and all pioneer species (Betula pendula, Populus tremula, Pinus sylvestris, Salix caprea, Sorbus aucuparia) accounted for 21-23%. However, the researched plots are generally covered by birch due to the share of this species amounts to nearly 90% in the height classes above 0.5 m. The birch appeared within 4-6 years of the disintegration period of the spruce stand. The succession of the birch, its quick growth and ability to develop a crown confirm the possibility of using this species as a pioneer crop. Climax species (silver fir and common beech) can be introduced to a seven-year-old birch pioneer crop, depending on the birch vitality, with the assumption of the conversion period of 30 to 40 years. In the case of the birch vitality abatement the suggested period of conversion will have to be shortened.

Badano zmiany właściwości chemicznych gleb porolnych zachodzące w okresie pierwszych 50 lat wzrostu przedplonów sosnowych. Stwierdzono wzrost kwasowości czynnej, kwasowości potencjalnej, zawartości A1 ruchomego, materii organicznej, rozszerzanie się wartości C:N i tendencję do wzrostu przyswajalnego K, Mn, Zn. Zakwaszenie gleby spowodowało obniżenie nasycenia gleby kationami zasadowymi i zmniejszenie zawartości wymiennego Ca i przyswajalnego Mg. P. Zmiany zaznaczają się tylko w poziomie akumulacji próchnicy i stopniowo upodabniają gleby porolne do gleb leśnych występujących pod drzewostanami jodłowymi.

The aim of the work was to investigate the effect of pioneer pine stands and time on mountainous postagricultural soils in the Jaworzyna Krynicka range (Beskid Sądecki Mts). The study included 20 soil profiles in pioneer pine stands representing the following age classes: Ib - 11-20, IIa - 21-30, IIb - 31-40, and IIIa - 41-50 years (5 profiles in each age class) and 20 profiles in agricultural soils neighbouring upon the pine stands. 5 comparable profiles were investigated in 80-100-year-old fir stands. The determination of chemical properties was carried out using methods applied in analyses оf mountane soils (Tables 1, 2 Figs 1, 2). It was assessed that the changes of chemical properties were statistically significant only in the Ah horizon of humus accumulation. The pioneer pine stand brought about an increase in active and potential acidity, concentration of mobile A1 (Fig. 1), and content of organic matter, while the value of C:N ratio rose (Fig. 2) and a tendency was manifested to an increasing content of assimilable K, Mn, and Zn. The increased acidity reduced the saturation of tile sorptive complex with alkaline cations and the content of total N, exchangeable Ca, and assimilable Mg and P (Tables 1, 2). Any further impoverishment of soils may be prevented by increasing the admixture of species positively affecting the soil, such as sycamore, ash, elm, and linden.

The paper presents the dimension of damage in fir and spruce upgrowth during light felling, carried out in predominant stand of mountain forests. The work was limited to the analysis of damage in up growth. Weak relation between the quantity of obtained wood and the dimension of damage in renovations defined to what extent the morphological build of predominant forest and trees location in the area influence the dimension of damage during cutting. Total dimension of all types up growths damage ranged from 2.6 to 12.6 in pine stand and from 1.7 to 4.7 in spruce stand.
