This article is an attempt to take a critical look on Oskar Kolberg’s works in the context of modern methodological standards, which are accepted in the folklore research. The analysis of specific qualities of Kolberg’s material, (e.g. the way of obtaining ethnographical data, organizing them and preparing for print) leads to a few conclusions. An ambitious and innovating project (an attempt to show the connections between folk texts and folk culture in general) was partly realized, because in Kolberg’s works there is a characteristic dissonance. Some texts are placed in the group with descriptions of habits, beliefs and rituals, some in the separate sections associated with literature (e.g. “Folk novels”, “Songs”, “Proverbs”). And the third group consists of dances. The entire material is divided in two basic sections. The first one includes texts, which are recognized as closely connected with cultural context and this connection is emphasized. The second section includes texts, which are treated as autonomous and their links with other elements of folk culture are omitted and marginalized. It appears that Kolberg, despite his very modern, holistic approach to culture research, stayed in the strong influence of philological and musicological paradigms. They were not harmoniously combined, but competed which each other and gained “local victories” in particular areas of research.

What is presented in study is the completed project “Explore culture of the region or storytelling with Bison the Animal” – artistic and educational workshops for young schoolchildren, as an attractive proposal for educational activities. The main purpose of the meetings was to introduce children to the culture of the region by reading them the legends of Podlasie.

Przedstawiam zrealizowany projekt „Poznaj kulturę regionu, czyli bajanie z Żubrozwierzem” – warsztaty artystyczno-edukacyjne dla dzieci w wieku wczesnoszkolnym, jako atrakcyjną propozycję zajęć edukacyjnych. Głównym celem spotkań było przybliżenie dzieciom wielokulturowego bogactwa regionu i jego tradycji poprzez czytanie legend Podlasia.

The interwar period was the time of rapid development of Latvian humanities, especially in the field of folklore. Latvian researchers, thanks to their international contacts, transposed the newest methods of folklore research to Latvia, especially the geographical-historical method. In the years of 1930-1934 a Polish professor Julian Krzyżanowski, a prominent Polish philologist and later a folklore specialist, was working at Latvian University. Thanks to the contacts with Latvian folklorists, he got acquainted with the newest research methods in the field of folklore, especially with the Aarne–Thompson classification systems. Cooperation with Latvian folklorist Pēteris Šmits resulted to be exceptionally inspiring. Šmits's monumental work: Latviešu pasakas un teikas (Latvian fairy tales and legends) was an important inspiration for the classification of Polish folktales.

Dzisiaj egzegeci prowadzą badania biblijne za pomocą różnorodnych metod i podejść. Najważniejsze z nich zostały wymienione w dokumencie zatytułowanym Interpretacja Biblii w Kościele. Od ukazania się tej publikacji minęło ponad 25 lat. Artykuł jest formą upamiętnienia tego wydarzenia. Proponuje się w nim podejście do Biblii przez bajki, co wzbogaca interpretację Pisma Świętego. Opracowanie wykazuje to za pomocą aplikacji bajkowych motywów ryby i śmiechu. W bajkach ryba i śmiech oznaczają między innymi początek nowego etapu w życiu danego bohatera lub stają się nawet przyczyną sprawczą ciąży, czyli powstania nowego życia. Uwzględnienie owych idei umożliwia lepsze zrozumienie tych tekstów biblijnych, w których również występują wątki ryby i śmiechu.

Nowadays, Catholic exegetes interpret the Bible using a variety of methods and approaches. The most important of these are mentioned in the document entitled The Interpretation of the Bible in the Church. More than 25 years have passed since this act was published. This article wants to commemorate this event. It proposes an approach to the Bible through fables. The application of the proposed approach undoubtedly enriches the interpretation of the Scriptures. This thesis is demonstrated by the application of two fables motifs: fish and laughter. In fables, fish and laughter quite often mark the beginning of a new stage in the life of a certain protagonist or even become the causative agent of pregnancy, i.e. a new life. Paying attention to these ideas enables a better understanding of those biblical texts that also contain themes of fish and laughter.
