Applying copula-based bivariate flood frequency analysis is advantageous because the results provide information on both the flood peak and volume. More data are, however, required for such an analysis, and it is often the case that only data series with a limited record length are available. To overcome this issue of limited record length, data regarding climatic and geomorphological properties can be used to complement statistical methods. In this paper, we present a study of 27 catchments located throughout Norway, in which we assess whether catchment properties, flood generation processes and flood regime have an effect on the correlation between flood peak and volume and, in turn, on the selection of copulas. To achieve this, the annual maximum flood events were first classified into events generated primarily by rainfall, snowmelt or a combination of these. The catchments were then classified into flood regime, depending on the predominant flood generation process producing the annual maximum flood events. A contingency table and Fisher’s exact test were used to determine the factors that affect the selection of copulas in the study area. The results show that the two-parameter copulas BB1 and BB7 are more commonly selected in catchments with high steepness, high mean annual runoff and rainfall flood regime. These findings suggest that in these types of catchments, the dependence structure between flood peak and volume is more complex and cannot be modeled effectively using a one-parameter copula. The results illustrate that by relating copula types to flood regime and catchment properties, additional information can be supplied for selecting copulas in catchments with limited data.

Synthetic modelling of the flood regime is based on the overall knowledge of the hydrological regime in a catchment. The Flow-duration-Frequency (QdF) modelling is used to combine three parameters characterising flood with its mean or exceeded flow, its characteristic duration, and occurrence frequency. Which of these can be established locally at the extreme mean volume flow rates of a catchment reference hydrometric station? The determination of the reference QdF model in mean (volume) and exceeded flows requires two characteristics reflecting the flood regime in a catchment. The first is the characteristic flood duration and the second is the 10-year quantile of the annual maximum instantaneous flow. The comparison of the local situation to the reference QdF models enables to develop the final QdF model of the catchment and therefore the baseline QdF for exceeded and synthetic mono-frequency hydrographs. These are essential components in the study of flood risk mapping and the estimation of the instantaneous peak distribution from mean daily streamflow series.

The last free stretch of the River Paraná inside of Brazilian territory, about 230 km of the former 810 km, runs in a wide floodplain, which flood regime is controlled in part by upstream dams. Aim to evaluate the impacts of different levels of hydrological control on the regional fish diversity, nutritional condition, trophic categories proportion, reproduction and young abundance monthly sampling were carried, between 1986 and 1993, during three annual periods with different flood duration and intensity. Lagoons, secondary channels and river channel was sampled with gillnet of different mesh size and standardized effort. Diversity, evenness indexes and number of species increased with the occurrence of floods. The trophic category proportions varied among the periods considered, with a decrease in piscivores participation and an increase of iliophages, herbivores and insectivores (terrestrial) participation in big flood years. The tendencies for piscivores guild were not uniform to every pecies. The variations on the nutritional condition reveal that the absence of flooding has a negative effect on greater migratory species and positive on sedentary ones. The young abundance shows, however, that fail in the flooding has a strong negative impact on de recruitment of all the reproductive strategies. It’s stressed the operational procedures in the upstream dams and the maintenance of the floodplain integrity is essential to preserve the regional biodiversity, fisheries and particularly the greater migratory fishes population.
