The Journey towards a Teacher’s Ecological Self: A Case Study of a Student Teacher

Transforming our educational systems to support sustainable development is a challenge that involves all levels of education – policy, curriculum and pedagogical practice. One critical dimension to look at is a teacher’s identity as it influences a teacher’s decision-making, behaviour and action. The ecological self is the concept that is used in the context of sustainability. This paper discusses the emerging ecological self of one student teacher during her initial teacher education programme. The concepts of the teacher’s self and the ecological self form a lens through which the story of this student teacher is examined. The paper focuses on one part of a broader, longitudinal study of student teachers and their understanding of pedagogy and connectedness with nature in the context of the need for reorienting teacher education towards sustainability. Sterling’s (2001) conceptual framework of ecological view on education is taken as a tool to analyse the collected data. The results indicate that deep connectedness to nature and empathy are framing the holistic view on learning, teaching and a teacher’s self.

Wzrost społecznego niepokoju związanego ze stanem zanieczyszczenia środowiska, kurczeniem się zasobów naturalnych, zmiejszaniem się arktycznej czapy lodowej – by wymienić tylko kilka – doprowadził do zwiększonego zainteresowania ruchami ekologicznymi. Podczas gdy "płytkie ruchy ekologiczne" skupiają się na szukaniu technologicznych rozwiązań zaistniałego kryzysu lub dążą do ochrony środowiska poprzez wprowadzenie zmian na poziomie administracyjnym, głęboka ekologia stara się dotrzeć do najgłębszego źródła problemu, jakim są podstawowe założenia ludzkiego światopoglądu. W tym artykule opisuję rozwój pojęcia antropocentryzmu wraz z jego implikacjami ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem wielkiego łańcucha bytów, który uważam za podstawowe pojęcie zachodniej kultury. Następnie przedstawiam alternatywny pogląd ekologii głębokiej wraz z jej ujęciem środowiska jako sieci istotowych relacji, ekologicznego-ja oraz biosferycznego egalitaryzmu.

The growing concern over the state of environment pollution, depletion of natural resources, diminishing Arctic polar ice cap, to name just a few, has led to escalating interest in ecological movements. While "shallow ecology movements" focus on developing technological solutions or fight for protection on the level of administration, deep ecology goes to the root of the global environmental crisis which is the human worldview. In this paper I describe how the notion of anthropocentrism evolved and its implications with particular focus on the conception of the great chain of beings, which is considered as underlying thought pattern of Western Culture. Later on I present the alternative view of deep ecology with its notions of environment as a net of intrinsic relations, ecological self as well as biospheric egalitarianism.
