A preliminary analysis of the possibility of diagnostic monitoring of an essential element of the driving mechanism of a dam is presented. The choice of the element has been performed and the method of observation has been indicated. A safe operating of steel ropes requires carrying on periodical examinations; the results of these examinations are the basis for delivering opinions concerning the technical state of the ropes. In the magnetic method, recognition of damages is performed on the basis of the analysis of amplitudes.
