EN
Being bitten by a dog can have serious health effects. That is why, never underestimate even the smallest soft tissue injuries inflicted by aggressive animals. This incident may have an impact on the further condition of a patient. From our first aid will also depend the aesthetic and functional effect of the scar on the face. We should pay attention to the use of antibiotic prophylaxis. The aim of the study was to perform the analysis of the soft tissue bitten injuries made by dogs in patients treated in the years 2004‑2009 in the Clinic of Cranio-Maxillo-Facial and Oncological Surgery in Łódź. The most frequent attacked areas were analyzed in the cases of single and multiple face wounds. The dependence of the dog attacks and the alcohol consumption by the victims. The use of an early antibiotic prophylaxis and the number of the infectious complications. Material and methods. The material studied is a group of 26 patients, including 17 women and 9 men. In the majority patients were older than 20 years old. Results. The analysis of our data shows that most of the victims were aged 19-30 and 51-60 years. 14 patients have been mutilated on one area of the face, the remaining patients at least two areas. Most injuries underwent upper or lower lip. In all cases, the initial supply has been applied to the wounds. Antibiotic prophylaxis was used in 23 patients. In one of the other three cases, patient who have not been applied to the prevention of complications in the form of phlegmon face. Half of the attack dogs have been known to the victims. All patients had implemented prevention of tetanus, or held-to-date vaccinations. In eight cases, patients reported that at the time of the event they were under the influence of alcohol. Conclusions. Primary supply of bitten wounds of face at the moment seems to be the standard. In our study, in cases where patients has been treated with an antibiotic, there was no case of infection in the wound. Late complication in the form of phlegmon occurred in one patient who had not used prophylaxis. As the most of the authors note lower lip is the most vulnerable for the bite in the case of adult people. Analysis of our data is consistent with these reports. It has also been found that people under the influence of alcohol are often attacked by unknown dogs.

Paper aims to give a definition of linguistic image of the world, and create a basis for methodological research focused in linguistic image of dog in Polish language. Besides the main topic, the paper also determines the phases of the research project and the main trends that will be important during its various phases’ realization. Our research team hopes that on this basis, the project will be the both, not only interesting, but also practical, functional, and able to answer in a comprehensive way any questions about the language picture of a dog in Polish (and Czech, Ukrainian and Russian languages).

The fascial system is an integral part of the musculoskeletal system. It is a three-dimensional network of connective tissue spreading ubiquitously throughout the body, surrounding muscles, bones, internal organs, nerves, vessels, and other structures. The basic biophysical properties of the fascial system are determined by its structure and chemical composition. This study aimed to determine the elemental composition of pathologically unchanged fascia lata of the thigh, collected during autopsies on humans and dogs. The wide spectrum of elements analysed included both macro and micro elements. The analyses were conducted using scanning electron microscopy with X-ray microanalysis (SEM-EDS). Concentrations of the following macro and micro elements were dermined: C, N, O, Na, Mg, Al, Si, P, S, Cl, K, Ca, Ti, Fe Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn. The obtained results showed significant differences between human and canine fascia lata regarding the content of most of the examined elements (p < 0.05), except for N. These data may in future provide a starting point for the establishment of reference values for the content of various elements in normal fascial tissue and may also serve to verify the usefulness of experimental animal material as a substitute for human tissue.

This article presents a reflection what does it mean to be “a dog” on a Polish-language websites. The article contains a briefly dictionary description of the dog, its image on the dictionaries of Linde and of Doroszewski and presents the found metaphors consisting of a verb “to be” and component “dog” or a component falling within the scope of the (female dog, puppy, mongrel). Most often, these designations appeared on web as 2nd singular person, especially with examples with „dog”, “puppy” and “mongrel”, examples with “female dog” appeared also often as 1st singular person. To be “a dog” on Polish-language websites means the person, who is false, naive, stupid, blindly executing commands, lame, weak, worthless, without identity, underestimated, person, who is not treated seriously and without experience, woman, who frequently changes partners, plays with them, uses them, without feelings and spiteful.

The aim of the article is to present the Polish version of the Pet Attachment Questionnaire and its psychometric properties. The tool is used to measure both the strength and quality of attachment of the owner to the animal. Authors of the original version indicate that the strength of the attachment to a dog is often considered without any theoretical background. On the other hand, the quality of the relationship is reflected in the attachment style, mainly through two dimensions: anxiety and avoidance, taken from Bowlby’s theory. The Polish version was created for dog owners. The study was attended by 119 dog owners. The results confirmed the two-factor structure of the tool and high reliability. The questionnaire was shortened to 24 items to achieve better psychometric properties. It has been shown that the results of both subscales are significant predictors of owners’ behavior towards their dogs and that the anxious attachment is positively related to the intensity of depressive symptoms.

The aim of this study was to assess the growth and the changes in the shape of a femoral head in dog puppies with dislocated and unstable hip joints. Ten 5-week-old, mountain shepherd puppies were divided into two subgroups. In five animals, the femoral head was dislocated, and in the other five dogs, femoral head was reduced after the dislocation procedure, making the joint congruent but unstable. After 4 weeks the animals were euthanised. The optical method of contour measurement of the femoral head sphericity was used. The shape of the dislocated femoral head differed from the normal one. The medial part was extended into beard-like form. The overgrowth of the femoral heads was significant and from 38% to 61% larger compared with the normal contralateral head. The unstable head of the second group did not differ in the shape nor in its size from the contralateral normal one. The large adaptive and deforming changes of shape in the dislocated femoral heads in our study show the pronounced malformation of the joint. The shape of beard-like deformity may be explained by the enlargement of contact surface between the medial part of the head and illiac bone. The restricting modelling role of the acetabulum, the minor vascular impairment during the surgery and the short time of follow-up were possible factors contributing to the minimal changes of the affected femoral head in the unstable but congruent hip joint.

The article analyzes one of the sculptures from the Wilanów main gate, which in the existing literature was considered to represent a bear. In fact, however, it is a representation of a dog. Archive sources revealed that this sculpture came from the Wilanów garden. It was not placed at the entrance gate until 1721, at a time when the former royal residence was owned by Queen Elżbieta Helena Sieniawska née Lubomirska. It is so far the only known garden sculpture from the Wilanow garden, probably coming from the times of King Jan III Sobieski.

Taking Barthes’ discussion of Aesop’s lion as my starting point, I examine the notion of the stereotype as it applies to the use of animals in philosophy and cultural theory. By employing an illustrative selection of animal ciphers from Saussure and Austin, and animal indices from Peirce and Schopenhauer, I argue that theory’s beasts are always at risk of becoming either exemplars of a deadening, generic Animal or mere stultifying stereotypes. Gilbert Ryle’s faithful dog, Fido, as well as a number of Aesop’s edifying animals, help to demonstrate that these two dangers are not inescapable, however. I close by indicating two strategies for preventing the unnecessary inhibition of the creatures of critical theory, focusing on Derrida’s individual and gently unruly cat.
