Using a computer and various add-ons as a scanner, digitizer and appropriate software, a digital map can be created from an existing graphic map. Here, I present research which was conducted to determine the precision of conversion of a graphic map into a digital map using scanning, calibration and vectorization of rasters, and digitalization. The object of the experiment was a survey plan of a housing estate, for which, from the same coordinates, maps were created in 1:1000, 1:2000 (graph 1) and 1:5000 scales. Those maps were printed on the same printer. Then, the prepared maps were converted into a digital form, by way of: 1) scanning, calibration and vectorization of rasters - using the C-GEO software, and 2) digitalization, using the GeoSET software. The results of the experiment are presented om tables numbered 1 to 10. The result is that the process of map converting by scanning is more precise than digitalization. The results are precise than results obtained by direct methods from graphic maps.

A computer system for semi-automatic detection of specific 2-D objects in digital images of cartographic maps is presentad. The system design combines image analysis methods with computer graphics and data base technologies. The purpose of this application system is to speed up the work of human specialist, to increase its efficiency and to transform cartographic maps into a symbolic, vector-based shape, i. e. to represent them in a general purpose data base. The system consists of three main modules: image analysis, graphic editor and data base administration. Up to now the object types being detected are: roads, cities, textured areas and some characteristic signs.

A new application using The Global Navigation Satellite System is the main objective of a project developed at the Department of Advanced Geodesy of CTU in Prague. Essential functionality is determining the location of a moving object on a predefined track. New and unique features deal with simultaneously processing GPS measurement data with other information, such as information about trajectory and object velocity. This method reduces the minimum number of satellites necessary to locate a moving object to only two satellites. The fully developed system may be useful for active management and tracking of public city transportation or monitoring of freight movement, e.g. hazardous materials.

Głównym celem projektu realizowanego w Katedrze Zawansowanej Geodezji w Pradze jest nowe zastosowanie The Global Navigational Satellite System. Metoda ta zmniejsza minimalną liczbę satelitów potrzebnych do zlokalizowania obiektu do jedynie dwóch. W pełni opracowany system może być użyteczny dla aktywnego zarządzania publicznym transportem miejskim lub monitorowania ruchu frachtu, na przykład niebezpiecznych materiałów.

The paper presents an approach that integrates stereoscopic images, numerical maps of terrain and inertial sensors’ signals for estimation of geographical location of system user. The proposed solution improves on the GPS system in terms of accuracy and it can be used also inside buildings where GPS readouts are not available. The system was designed with a view of blind pedestrians. The prototype employs the particle fi ltering algorithm to fuse data from diff erent sources.

The paper presents the implementation of two multithreaded applications for data visualization of marine objects written in C#, designed to run on operator consoles with 32-bit or 64-bit Windows 7 OS. The article describes the most important functionality and features of the developed C# .NET user controls for data visualization on digital maps and in the configurable tables.

An approach to the implementation of spatial inventory of greenhouse gas sinks and emissions in forestry sector is presented. The algorithms for disaggregation of official statistical data on forests at the regional level, and formation of geodistributed database using the digital map of land use are proposed. As an example the forests of Subcarpathian Voivodeship of Poland were investigated. This study presents the results of modeling the flow of carbon in forest phytomass taking into account different tree species composition, age class and other characteristics. The ‘regional’ coefficients for phytomass and carbon deposited were clarified taking into account regional specificity. Also an algorithm for determining aboveground and underground phytomass of tree by its stock and forests of different types has been created. The correlation between the total area and stock for each species of forest-forming stands was analysed. The multilayer digital maps of deposited carbon, and greenhouse gas emissions in forests of Subcarpathian Voivodeship were created. For the spatial inventory of forest phytomass the territory of voivodeship was divided into square areas 2x2 kilometers in size, and stock phytomass in each such elementary area has been analised. Acheaved results were verified using GIS technology, and forest inventory data.

An electronic system and an algorithm for estimating pedestrian geographic location in urban terrain is reported in the paper. Different sources of kinematic and positioning data are acquired (i.e.: accelerometer, gyroscope, GPS receiver, raster maps of terrain) and jointly processed by a Monte-Carlo simulation algorithm based on the particle filtering scheme. These data are processed and fused to estimate the most probable geographical location of the user. A prototype system was designed, built and tested with a view to aiding blind pedestrians. It was shown in the conducted field trials that the method yields superior results to sole GPS readouts. Moreover, the estimated location of the user can be effectively sustained when GPS fixes are not available (e.g. tunnels).

The aim of the paper is to make the issue of forest digital maps in six EU countries familiar, namely in Belgium, France, United Kingdom, Norway, Spain and Portugal. To this end, the author took advantage of internet pages of institutions responsible for developing these maps and of information from persons involved in these problems in individual countries. The ways of creating these maps were mentioned, sources of information of geometric and descriptive databases were pointed and thematic layers accessible through the GIS were named. Gathered information led to conclusion that forest information in UE is not homogeneous mainly due to ownership.s structure of forests. The issue of forest digital maps, which are a part of land use maps and the issue of forest digital maps, which are strictly made for foresters. use, as a result of inventory and management actions, were also mentioned. It is clear that there are significant differences between these two types of maps in degree of detail and accessibility. It is noted, that it is quite common to gather information needed to create forest digital maps, using aerial photographs and all the advantages of GIS. In the summary, the features, which differ forest digital maps in individual countries were discussed. Also conformity of these maps was discussed as a base for creating a uniform forest information exchange system.
