The focus of our studies is to present an advanced depletion analysis of the HELIOS experiment by means of the Monte Carlo continuous energy burn-up code (MCB). The MCB was used mainly to calculate nuclide density evolution in nuclear reactor cores. We present the capability of the MCB to investigate the depletion of nuclear fuel samples irradiated in the HELIOS experiment. In our studies we traced the behaviour of the main fissile isotopes, 242mAm and 239Pu, respectively. We also perform a sensitivity analysis to the choice of JEF2.2 and JEFF3.1 cross section libraries in terms of the released fission power and the evolution of actinide inventories. The amount of He produced at the end of irradiation, as well as Am and Pu depletion, were also considered.

The earth’s carrying capacity to support human life has been overstretched by increasing need to meet food requirements, consumption of resources; amount of waste generation and choice of technologies. These activities release into the atmosphere, chemical constituents of varied concentrations. When these chemicals enter into the atmosphere, they are subjected to various transformations that yield products or intermediates that tend to alter atmospheric chemical balance. In recent years, the global problem of ozone depletion has underscored the danger of overstepping earth’s ability to absorb waste products. This study therefore, focuses on the various chemical reactions involved in ozone depletion and the effects of ozone layer depletion on plant, animals, materials and climate.

W referacie przedstawiono nowoczesne możliwości badawcze Instytutu Nafiy i Gazu, Oddział Krosno. Zaprezentowano aparaturę do badań PVT w zadanych warunkach ciśnienia i temperatury złożowej. Są to dwa zestawy aparaturowe: — system rtęciowy, — nowoczesny, bezrtęciowy system PVT. Modyfikacje i rozbudowa posiadanej aparatury PVT o dodatkowe elementy/moduły pozwoliły na poszerzenie zakresu oferowanych badań o metody zwiększenia stopnia sczerpania złóż węglowodorów — zarówno ropy, jak i gazu ziemnego. W referacie przedstawiono badania procesu wypierania ropy z długich rdzeni wiertniczych (wypieranie z zastosowaniem różnych mediów wypierających i zmiennych parametrów prowadzenia procesu).

The paper presents modern research possibilities of the Institute of Oil and Gas, Krosno Section. PVT equipment for the research in a assigned pressure and temperature reservoir conditions was presented. There are two sets of equipment: — mercury system, — modern, mercury-free PVT systems. Modification and expansion of PVT equipment with additional elements/modules made it possible to broaden the scope of research by methods of increasing the degree of exhaustion of hydro- carbon reserves — both oil and natural gas. The paper presents an investigation of oil displacement from long cores (displacement with use of different media supplant and variable parameters of the process). Also there were presented research works on the modeling of the desorption process of domestic natural gas dissolved in the reservoir brine through the injection of CO2. Experiments using different solubility of CO2 and methane gas in brine, shall be carried out on a physical model of the deposit characterized by porosity and large pore volume, which allows to "get closer" to the nature of the phenomena occurring in a real reservoir.

Production decline under all its aspects, sometimes controllable, but more and more inconsistent with the growing demands of the natural gas market, has imposed a new approach on mature gas reservoirs which Romania owns, namely, their rehabilitation. During exploitation, after recording a considerable production history and implicitly a appreciable depletion, it is necessary the evaluation of maintaining or changing the exploitation strategy. The approaches in this sense must be from the perspective of improving the value of mature gas fields. Throughout the exploitation of a gas reservoir generally there are distinquished several stages, such as gradually increase of gas flow rates due to increasing gas wells introduced into production; maintaining of a quasi-constant production; a accentuated decline of gas flow rates of the reservoir respectively a attenuated decline of gas flow rates of the reservoir. The first three stages are quite short reported to the whole exploitation process of the reservoir. The production decline appears sooner or later depending on the manifestation form of the reservoir energy. For the accuracy of the baseline which is to be established, can be taken in discussion, as reference intervals, those periods from the production history, in which the points dispersion is minimal, and flow rates respectively the production are comparable with the current ones. Taking into consideration the decline values obtained from decline curve analysis characteristically to every exploitation stage, we consider that to define the baseline production afferent to the next stage, it is optimal to accept the specific decline of the latest exploitation period. It can be noted that throughout production history, although the exploitation of the gas reservoir was intensified, due to accessing new reserve volumes, the decline tendency is to maintain at a limited interval. This behavior indicates the fact that also in conditions of intensifying the exploitation in the future, the decline will maintain a value sensitively close to the values from the latest periods, in which rehabilitation was applied.

Particles generated from numerous anthropogenic and/or natural sources, such as crystalline α-Fe2O3 nanoparticles, have the potential to damage lung cells. In our study we investigated the effects of these nanoparticles (12.5 µg/ml) on lipid peroxidation and the antioxidative system in MRC-5 lung fibroblast cells following exposure for 24, 48 or 72 h. Exposure to α-Fe2O3 nanoparticles increased lipid peroxidation by 81 %, 189 % and 110 % after 24, 48 and 72 h, respectively. Conversely, the reduced glutathione concentration decreased by 23.2 % and 51.4 % after 48 and 72 h of treatment, respectively. In addition, an augmentation of the activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione transferase and glutathione reductase within the interval between 48-72 h was noticed. Taking into account that the reduced glutathione level decreased and the malondialdehyde level, a lipid peroxidation product, remained highly increased up to 72 h of exposure, it would appear that the MRC-5 antioxidant defense mechanisms did not efficiently counteract the oxidative stress induced by exposure to hematite nanoparticles.

Przeprowadzono porównawcze badania nad oceną przydatności metod określania stopnia zużycia węgla aktywnego stosowanego do oczyszczania wody. Analizowano przydatność każdej metody do oceny stopnia zużycia węgla aktywnego w procesie oczyszczania wody.

Comparative studies were carried out to assess the usefulness of the available methods for estimating the extent of depletion of the active carbon used in the water treatment process. For this purpose, we made use of extruded active carbon samples from filter beds after passage of three different quantities of water. The specific BET surface area was determined for each sample on the basis of low-temperature nitrogen adsorption, iodine number, ash content, and loss of mass during thermogravimetric heating from 150 oC to 600 oC. Also for each sample the cyclic voltammetric curve was recorded by the powdered carbon electrode technique, using Fe(III) ions in acidic solution as depolarizers. The results were correlated with the volumetric water flow through the active carbon filters. The benefits offered by each method when estimating the extent of depletion of the active carbon in the course of the water treatment process were analyzed.

Three types of anti-drifting atomizers and one standard atomizer were tested. The atomizers have been made of the three types of the material: steel, ceramics, plastic. The effect of atomizer depletion on non-uniformity of sprayed liquid (CV) and fluctuation of the liquid outflow rate were assessed. The tests revealed the highest service life of ceramic atomizers and effect of the depletion level on the change in liquid outflow rate while maintaining the CV coefficient.

Cooking oil deteriorates with repeated thermal exposure, resulting in appearance change and formation of oxygen radicals. Consumption of the deteriorated oil causes oxidative stress related to lipid metabolism. This study evaluated the effects of palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) oil on hepatic histology, redox status, and cytochrome P450 (CYP) profiles. Adult female mice were orally given purified water (control), fresh, or reused palm oil (4.5 g/kg/day) daily for 16, 24, and 36 weeks. The livers were then collected for histological examination and for the evaluation of the redox system and CYP expression profiles. Treatment with fresh oil for 36 weeks resulted in some pyknosis and karyorrhexis in hepatic tissues, while reused oil resulted in more injuries to the nuclei with hepatic fat accumulation from week 24 onwards. Depletion in reduced glutathione (GSH) stores, with a significant decrease in the GSH/GSSG ratio, was observed with the reused oil but not with the fresh oil. The expression profiles of drug-metabolizing CYPs were significantly modulated; Cyp2c29, Cyp3a11, and Cyp3a13 were suppressed by both fresh and reused oil, while only the reused oil elevated Cyp2e1. The expression of Cyp4a10 and Cyp4a14, the key enzymes in lipid metabolism, were expectedly up-regulated by both. These findings suggest reused oil has a deleterious effect on hepatic ultrastructure, induces an imbalance of redox state, and causes Cyp2e1 activation-associated oxidative stress. It is therefore recommended that fresh rather than reused palm oil be used for cooking, and large-scale or long-term consumption be avoided to reduce the risk of liver damage and drug-interactions.

The study was designed to determine metabolic and hormonal responses to acute modification of body carbohydrate stores by exercise and subsequent meals and to find out whether the responses depend on the training status of subjects. Nine sedentary students and 10 endurance athletes took part in four experimental sessions. During control session, after overnight fast oxygen uptake and CO2 production were measured and blood glucose, free fatty acids (FFA), insulin (I), leptin (L), growth hormone (GH), testosterone (T), catecholamines, ACTH and cortisol were determined. The remaining sessions were preceded by 1.5 h exercise at 70% HRmax in the evening followed by 12-16 hrs fast till morning when subjects ate either high-carbohydrate (H-CHO) or low-carbohydrate (L-CHO) meal or fasted. Respiratory gases and blood samples were collected before and 2 hours after meal. In glycogen depleted subjects respiratory quotient (RQ), I, norepinephrine (NE) and L decreased, whilst other variables were unaltered. Changes in I and NE were greater in athletes than in sedentary subjects. After H-CHO RQ, blood glucose, I and NE increased and FFA, GH and T decreased. The latter effect was greater in athletes than in untrained subjects. After L-CHO, RQ was at the fasting level and FFA increased only in sedentary group. In both groups I increased and GH and T decreased. Neither meal affected L concentration. In conclusion, hormonal and metabolic changes observed after depleting carbohydrate stores resemble those occurring during starvation. Composition of the ingested meal affects postprandial metabolism, which additionally depends on the subjects’ training status.

The supply of substrates to the respiratory chain as well as of other metabolites (e.g. ATP) into inner compartments of mitochondria is crucial to preprotein import into these organelles. Transport of the compounds across the outer mitochondrial membrane is enabled by mitochondrial porin, also known as the voltage-dependent an- ion-selective channel (VDAC). Our previous studies led to the conclusion that the transport of metabolites through the outer membrane of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae mitochondria missing VDAC (now termed YVD AC 1) is considerably restricted. Therefore we expected that depletion of YVDAC1 should also hamper protein import into the mutant mitochondria. We report here that YVD AC 1-depleted mitochondria are able to import a fusion protein termed pSu9-DHFR in the amount comparable to that of wild type mitochondria, although over a considerably longer time. The rate of import of the fusion protein into YVD AC 1-depleted mitochondria is dis-tinctly lower than into wild type mitochondria probably due to restricted ATP access to the intermembrane space and is additionally influenced by the way the supporting respiratory substrates are transported through the outer membrane. In the presence of ethanol, diffusing freely through lipid membranes, YVDAC1-depleted mitochon- dria are able to import the fusion protein at a higher rate than in the presence of external NADH which is, like ATP, transported through the outer membrane by facilitated diffusion. It has been shown that transport of external NADH across the outer membrane of YVDAC1-depleted mitochondria is supported by the protein import machin- ery, i.e. the TOM complex (Kmita & Budziñska, 2000, Biochim. Biophys. Acta 1509, 86.94.). Since theTOMcomplex might also contribute to the permeability of themem-brane to ATP, it seems possible that external NADH and ATP as well as the imported preprotein could compete with one another for the passage through the outer mem- brane in YVDAC1-depleted mitochondria.
