In 1949 the first book of the Atlas of Polish Traditional Costumes series appeared. Józef Gajek was the one who initiated the series, published by Polish Folk Association to this day. He was associated with Polish Ethnographic Atlas, which had a great impact on the character of the series. Its main objective was to describe Polish traditional costumes according to particular regions. Janusz Kamocki and Barbara Bazielich were subsequent editors of the series. Since 2011 the authors of this article have been part of the editorial staff. At their initiative ten more books of the series were published in the years 2013–2018, field research on traditional handicraft was conducted and the Traditional Costume Section was established. The article describes the circumstances accompanying this editorial series appearance and discusses both main directions in research on traditional costumes and activities for popularising knowledge of this unique cultural phenomenon.

Henryk Uziembło (27 February 1879 – 3 May 1945) was one of the creators of modern decorative art; he also made graphics. From 1922 to the outbreak of World War II he was a lecturer at the Institute of Fine Arts in Krakow. He designed polychromes, stained glass windows and mosaics, book bindings, posters and made oil paintings. He is the author of the decorations of the wall of the Wawel chapter house.

Artysta malarz Henryk Uziembło (27 II 1879 - 3 III 1945) był jednym z twórców nowoczesnej sztuki dekoracyjnej, zajmował się także grafiką użytkową. Od 1922 roku do wybuchu wojny wykładał w Instytucie Sztuk Plastycznych w Krakowie. Projektował polichromie, witraże i mozaiki, oprawy książkowe, plakaty oraz wykonywał obrazy olejne. Jest autorem dekoracji ściennej kapitularza wawelskiego.

Niniejszy artykuł prezentuje w sposób przeglądowy zmiany w estetyce architektury od początku XX wieku do współczesności pod kątem postrzegania ornamentacji. Przedstawia zależności między obszarem dekoracji architektonicznej, zaliczającej się do sztuki dekoracyjnej, a rozwojem architektury. W oparciu o refleksje na temat spiralnego charakteru rozwoju form uwypukla zauważalną tendencję powrotu do fascynacji ornamentem.

This article provides an overview of changes in the aesthetics of architecture from the beginning of the 20th century to the present, with a focus on the perception of ornamentation. It presents the relationships between the area of architectural decoration, which is part of decorative art, and the development of architecture. Based on reflections on the spiral nature of form development, it highlights the noticeable trend of returning to the fascination with ornament.
