The aim of the article is to show that Roberto Bolaño reestablishes the continuity of the historical process in his prose, which contradicts the dominant postmodern tendency based on the aesthetics of nostalgia. The article analyzes the corporal construction of the protagonist of the novel El Tercer Reich. The analysis is based on the methodology of close reading and then comparative analysis, when it comes to put the results in the context of the representation of body in La parte de los crímenes. The construction of the body emphasizes its deformation and mutilation in order to make it a bearer of memory of the violence of the past. Bolaño’s reflection on history undermines the aesthetics of nostalgia due to ethical concerns related to the process of representation of the past. In his own narrative strategy he follows Walter Benjamin’s principle to preserve the memory of the oppressed. Bolaño understands it as the ethical task of literature.

The function of phraseology in selected crime novels set in the city of PoznańThis article presents several patterns concerning the function of phraseology in contemporary crime novels set in the city of Poznań. Standard Polish phraseologisms make the characters’ speech more colloquial, natural and expressive and are used to convey their emotions. The use of phraseological units typical of the region of Greater Poland adds local colour and makes the novels more realistic by closely relating them to the space where they are set. The use of phraseology also serves to characterise the protagonists. The study analyses four novels: Arcymistrz (Grandmaster) by Piotr Bojarski, Polichromia (Polychromy) by Joanna Jodełka, Upiory spacerują nad Wartą (Ghosts Walking on the Warta) by Ryszard Ćwirlej and Elektryczne perły (Bone Pearls) by Konrad T. Lewandowski.

The topic of Otherness has been investigated from the point of view of popular culture and popular fiction studies, especially on the basis of the multiracial social environments of the United States. The challenges of addressing real or potential conflicts in areas characterised by an ethnic puzzle are to some extent similar, but at the same time differ substantively from the political, legal, and fictional world of “race.” This paper investigates these differences in the ways of overcoming ethnic stereotyping on the basis of examples taken from post-World War II crime fiction of Southern Europe, and Middle East. In communist and post-communist Eastern Central Europe there are not many instances of mediational crime fiction. This paper will point to the few, although notable exceptions, while hypothesizing on the factors that could favor in the foreseeable future the emergence and expansion of such artistic experiments in the multiethnic and multicultural province of Transylvania.

Andrea Camilleri (1925–2019), one of the most prominent contemporary Italian writers, made a name for himself and won extraordinary popularity with readers as an author of crime fiction, including novels and short stories. Italian literary critics regard him as an undisputed master of Italian mystery writing. The paper seeks to synthetise the available data on the reception of Camilleri’s work in Poland by the end of 2021. The argument begins with an outline of Camilleri’s life and work, which is followed by a survey of the studies of his writings. These findings are complemented with statistics concerning his books on the Polish publishing market. Camilleri’s writing and publishing career represents an interesting research field that has been explored by Polish scholars for more than twenty years now. His fiction, which found its way into Poland with a considerable delay, has since garnered the appreciation of both readers and literary critics, as well as inviting interest from the media. Camilleri’s art as a novelist has also drawn the attention of Polish scholars, primarily literature researchers.

The Enlightenment inspired the Polish post-war authors to create thriller fables in different ways: first of all, there were attempts to literary work out authentic histories, then some authors “revealed” alleged inside stories of real events, finally some stories presented completely fictional episodes set in the realities of Polish, sometimes also European, Age of Enlightenment. The vision of the epoque, based on historical sources and studies, is most often rather stereotypical and illustrative in character, but nothing else should be expected in the popular literature. If there are any attempts to revise the view of that times, they refer only to the traditions of popular literature as well (like in the novel “Choć nas potępiają umysły zacięte...” written by Jerzy Siewierski, which clearly refers polemically to Aleksander Dumas’s “Diaries of a Doctor”). Except historical studies, diaries and other sources, also the literature of the Enlightenment is used in different ways. There are quotes or crypto-quotes in the plot, characters often read books that were popular in that times, we can also recognize features of some characters as typical for satire, comedy or novel of the Enlightenment Ages. Sometimes the narrative-fictional patterns of the eighteenthcentury novel are used as literary allusion. However, the most interesting works are the ones in which authors managed not only to compare a sensational, spy or criminal episode to the realities of the epoque, but also make elements of “the Spirit of the Enlightenment” an integral part of that plot. It is especially visible in the novels of Siewierski’s or Jerzy Piechowski’s.

The description and classification of linguistic references to the classical (Graeco-Roman) antiquity used in eight M. Krajewski’s crime novels are the main basis for the present paper. The conclusions form an attempt to look in general at the purposefulness of their use and the functions they serve, while referencing certain rules and tendencies related to crime writing and popular literature as such. The research results put forward are mostly based on the body of linguistic examination drawing from lexicology, phraseme studies, including phraseology, and onomastics. In the novels (about 600 fragments), the two-pronged (textual and paratextual) references to classical antiquity materialise in three layers: phraseme-related (polyword constructions in the form of Latin quotations and set phrases – reproductions, innovations and nonce words), lexical (Latin lexemes, eponyms and eponymisms), and onimic (primary and secondary proper names of ancient provenance among them).

Podstawę opracowania stanowią przede wszystkim opis i klasyfikacja użytych w siedmiu powieściach kryminalnych M. Krajewskiego językowych odwołań do antyku klasycznego (grecko-rzymskiego). W powieściach (w około 600 fragmentach) na dwóch płaszczyznach (paratekstu i tekstu) realizują się odwołania do antyku klasycznego w trzech warstwach: frazematycznej (konstrukcje wielowyrazowe w postaci cytatów łacińskich i frazeologizmów – reprodukty, innowacje i okazjonalizmy), leksykalnej (leksemy łacińskie, eponimy i eponimizmy) i onimicznej (m.in. prymarne i wtórne nazwy własne o antycznej proweniencji).
