The Assessment of Heavy Metals Content in Total and Bioavailable forms in the Soils Surrounding Cementownia Chelm S.A. in Chelm, Poland

The study consisted in assessing the impact of the cement industry on the selected physicochemical properties and total and bioavailable content of heavy metals in soils located in the vicinity of the factory. The sampling points were located in the four transects to the east, west, north and south of the plant, at an increasing distance of 0 - 250 - 500 - 1500 and 2000 m. The soil samples were collected from the depth of 0-20 cm. The analysed soils were characterised by the significant presence of calcium carbonate, distributed evenly in all directions. Concentrations of heavy metals were characterised by high variation, depending on the direction and distance from the cement factory. The percentages of bioavailable forms of heavy metals in the general pool did not exceed 10%.

Publikacja przedstawia analizę możliwości wykorzystania wyselekcjonowanych frakcji odpadów komunalnych i przemysłowych jako paliwa alternatywnego. Wytwarzanie paliwa odbywa się we Wrocławskim Przedsiębiorstwie Oczyszczania ALBA S.A., a wykorzystywane jest przez Cementownię Górażdże S.A. W wyniku przeprowadzonych badań stwierdzono, że w 2008 roku firma WPO ALBA wyprodukowała ponad 4 000 Mg paliw alternatywnych. Cementownia Górażdże wykorzystała w 2008 roku do produkcji klinkieru 178 876 Mg paliw alternatywnych. Przeróbka odpadów na paliwa alternatywne przyczyniła się do zmniejszenia ilości odpadów przeznaczonych do unieszkodliwiania poprzez składowanie.

The publication presents an analysis of the possibility of exploiting selected frac-tions of municipal and industrial wastes as alternative fuel. Production of the fuel takes place at the Wrocławskie Przedsiębiorstwo Oczyszczania ALBA S.A. and is used by Górażdże Cement S.A. During the examinations it was found that in 2008 WPO ALBA produced over 4 000 Mg of the alternative fuels. In 2008, Górażdże Cement S.A. used 178 876 Mg of the alternative fuels to produce cement. The processing of the waste to the alternative fuels contributes to a reduction of the wastes which are intended for neutralisation by storing.
