In this report we demonstrate a simple, effective and reliable diagnostic test of BLAD carrier detection based on specific PCR amplification of a 367 bp CD18 gene fragment and RFLP analysis using Taq I restriction enzyme. In a non-random population of 220 animals we found 48 BLAD carriers. Within the amplified PCR fragment an unknown intron sequence of 159 bp was identified.

The aim of this study was to estimate the relations between the CRH-A145G polymorphism and milk production traits (yields of milk, protein, and fat, as well as protein and fat content) in 176 Jersey cows. The genotype and allele frequencies were estimated and they were as follows: AG – 0.31; GG – 0.69; A – 0.16; G – 0.84. Statistical analysis revealed that studied polymorphism significantly affected the fat yield, fat content (P≤0.05) and protein content in milk (P≤0.05). The results indicate that selection for the CRH-A145G AG animals might contribute to increase the value of these traits in Jersey cattle. However, further studies are necessary to verify the results of our study.

The Romans believed that they originated from shepherds, and that the profession of a farmer was considered a noble occupation. In both agriculture and pastoralism the crucial role played cattle. Thanks to a very well-preserved agronomic Latin literature, we can accurately describe the cultures of these animals in ancient Rome. The most important sources of knowledge are Cato the Elder, Varro, Columella and Palladius. Farming description contains the information of the optimal age, race and appearance of the animal on which you need to pay attention when buying cattle. It also describes the most appropriate living conditions on the farm, such as animal housing, nutrition, health as well as breeding (the best age to breed, length of pregnancy, care of young animals and castration). Moreover, it provides valuable knowledge about most common diseases and their treatment and the benefits of keeping the animal. The description presented in an ancient literature nowadays allows the building of a big picture on the issue of breeding and keeping cattle.

Dodoru Market is popular for its weekly Market day in Kebbi State, Nigeria. People converge at the market every Monday from various places to buy or sell. Survey of ticks on camels and cattle brought to Dodoru Market for sale was conducted. The aim was to evaluate the prevalence of camel and cattle ticks. A total of 90 animals (40 camels and 50 cattle) were examined. Five tick species were identified and prevalence was evaluated. Results revealed that 32 of the camels were infected with the prevalence of 35.6% and cattle were also infested with 44.4 % prevalence. Boophilus decoloratus has the highest prevalence of 29.1 % in both camels and cattle. Thigh and abdomen were more susceptible to ticks species with the prevalence of 37.7 %. The survey also shows that cattle were more infested than camels and thigh/abdomen was observed to be the most preferred locations for ticks in both camels and cattle.

The aim of this study was to identify SNPs in leptin (LEP), leptin receptor (LEPR) and growth hormone (GH) genes in order to analyze genetic diversity of Slovak Spotted cattle. The total numbers of blood samples were taken from 353 Slovak Spotted cows originating from four farms. Genomic DNA was isolated by phenol-chloroform extraction method and analyzed by PCR-RFLP method. After digestion with restriction, enzymes were detected in whole population of cow's alleles with frequency: LEP/Sau3AI A 0.84 and B 0.16 (±0.0152); LEPR/BseGI C 0.95 and T 0.05 (±0.0089) and GH/AluI L 0.70 and V 0.30 (±0.0188). Based on the observed vs. expected genotypes frequencies populations across loci were in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (P\>0.05). Predominant for SNP LEP/Sau3AI was AA genotype (0.70), for SNP LEPR/T945M CC genotype (0.91), and LL genotype (0.48) was most frequent for SNP GH/AluI. The observed heterozygosity of SNPs across populations was also transferred to the low or median polymorphic information content 0.24 (He 0.28), 0.08 (He 0.09) and 0.33 (He 0.47) for LEP, LEPR and GH genes, respectively. Within genetic variability estimating negative values of fixation indexes FIS (-0.09-0.05) and FIT (-0.07-0.03) indicating heterozygote excess were observed. The value of FST indexes (0.018-0.023) shows very low levels of genetic differentiation in allele frequencies of loci among evaluated subpopulations. The low values of genetic distances (0.0018-0.0159) indicated high genetic relatedness among animals in subpopulations caused probably by common ancestry used in breeding program at farms.

The aim of the study was to assess the seroprevalence of Coxiella burnetii in cattle herds in different regions of Poland. A total of 1150 serum samples collected from 443 cattle herds from 14 provinces were tested using complement fixation test. The seroprevalence was different in individual regions of Poland. The average percentage of seropositive herds was 40.41% and these herds were identified in each province tested.

Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) experiments with specific probes for chromosome 29 and 25 were carried out on a Brown Swiss bull, previously diagnosed as a carrier of 1;29 centric fusion. The hybridization of the chromosome 29-specific probe (BMC 4216 - already located on 29q13), produced signals on two small acrocentrics, but not on the translocated chromosome. The signals appeared on the translocated chromosome and on a single chromosome 25 after hybridization of the chromosome-specific probe (BMC 3224 - previously located on 25q24). According to the actual nomenclature, the analysed aberration is a robertsonian translocation involving chromosomes 1 and 25.
