Purpose: The study proved automatic feeding to be more suitable for farms with large number of calves as it could substantially reduce working hours. Design/methodology/approach: The experiment comprised 20 calves which were monitored from birth until the age of 10 weeks. On specific days (1st, 8th, 29th, 50th and 71st) calves were weighed and their height of wither, height of rump and body length were measured. Findings: The comparison between feeding using bucket teat or automatic feeding system showed significant differences (p < 0.05) in the body weight during the period between 50th and 71st day of age (13.30 kg and 9.90 kg), in height of wither in the period between 8th and 29th day of age (1.80 cm and 2.70 cm) and in height of rump in the period between 29th and 50th day of age (1.70 cm and 2.70 cm). Research limitations/implications: On the first farm “A”, calves of Simmental breed were fed with milk replacer using a bucket teat (conventional feeding). On the second farm “B” calves of Holstein-Friesian breed were given milk replacer using an automatic milk feeding. Practical implications: The aim of our study was to find out which feeding strategy is more suitable for the calves and for the farmer. Originality/value: We studied different feeding strategies for calves on two farms. Significant differences were (p ≤ 0.001) in body length during the period between 50th and 71st day of age (2.80 cm and 1.50 cm).

Odpowiednie żywienie cieląt, w okresie od urodzenia do 12 miesięcy życia, wpływa w dużym stopniu na mleczność dorosłych krów. Dobór odpowiednich urządzeń stanowiących linie technologiczne do przygotowania wysokobiałkowych pasz do żywienia cieląt oraz jakość składników wysokobiałkowej paszy do żywienia cieląt stanowi podstawę badań efektywności żywienia wybranych grup kontrolnych cieląt. W artykule szczegółowo opisano technologię i urządzenia do przygotowywania łatwo przyswajalnej paszy opartej na roślinach strączkowych do karmienia cieląt. Stwierdzono, że dzięki karmieniu taką paszą szybciej rozwija się przewód pokarmowy u cieląt we wczesnym okresie życia. Odnotowano duży wzrost żywej wagi i jednocześnie zmniejszenie spożycia pełnego mleka lub jego zamienników. Badania wpływu koncentratu paszowego dla młodego bydła w okresie mlecznym wykazały wzrost wydajności o 6,6% i spadek kosztów karmy o 5,73%.

High milk productivity of adult animals is directly dependent on the conditions of growing and feeding calves in the dairy period. It is known that among the whole complex of factors affecting the intensive growth of calves, the quality of food and the method of feeding the calves in the first periods of postembryonic development of young animals from birth to 12 months deserve the most attention. In order to reduce the consumption of whole milk for feeding calves and accelerate the development of the digestive tract in calves in early life, with high gains in live weight, they are trying to implement in practice by introducing vegetable feed into the diet. However, plant foods, even highenergy ones, such as cereal and leguminous crops containing a large amount of protein, carbohydrates, starch, etc., are digested by the calves very slowly and in small quantities. It is shown that to eliminate these shortcomings, it is advisable to extrude all plant feed. Extrusion allows you to turn complex organic compounds of plant feed into easily digestible simple sugars and inactivate antinutrients. In order to achieve good eatability of the dry concentrate, milk powder and whey powder are included in its composition. The article describes in detail the technology and device for preparing easily digestible food based on legumes for feeding calves of the dairy period, which, when fed, accelerate the development of the digestive tract in the early life of calves with high gains in live weight, reduce the consumption of whole milk or its substitutes and energy costs by its production. Studies on the effect of feeding feed concentrate to young cattle during the dairy period under the conditions of MTF Berezovitsa SE ZhodinoAgroPleMelita showed an increase in productivity by 6.6% and a decrease in feed costs by 5.73%.
