The aim of the research was to improve the germination parameters of red beet monogerm clusters using pre-sowing treatments. Red beet (Beta vulgaris L.) clusters of two monogerm breeding lines, AR79A and W411A, differed in the initial germination capacity, were studied. Five seed treatments including rubbing, leaching for 4, 8 and 24 hours, and soaking for 24 hours, were performed. Based on the germination test carried out at 15 and 20ºC, the germination traits, such as the mean germination time (MGT), coefficient of uniformity of germination (CUG), coefficient of velocity (COV), germination capacity (GC) and germination rate (GR), were measured. Compared to the control, treatments used in the study improved the most of measured germination features for both tested lines. The leaching of clusters for 24 hours yielded the best enhancement in most of the germination traits. The rubbing was the least effective technique in terms of improvement in the germination parameters. The germination of treated clusters at 15 and 20°C presented comparable, and better than the control, values of germination features. The interaction between treatment method and germination temperature showed that leaching of clusters for 24 hours and germination at 20°C was the technique that successfully influenced the majority of the germination characteristics. Finally, it was noted that each pre-sowing technique significantly improve germination parameters, however the line AR79A with lower initial GC (65%) presented better improvement of MGT, CUG and GC than the line W411A with higher initial GC (84%).

The comparison experiments were conducted in 2001-2002 to evaluate six newly-bred strains of purple coneflower (Echinacea purpurea Moench.). The obtained results showed that strain 4 accomplished the main tasks of Echinacea breeding program.

Doświadczenia porównawcze rodów hodowlanych jeżówki purpurowej (Echinacea purpurea Moench.) przeprowadzono w latach 2001-2002 w celu sprawdzenia ich wartości gospodarczej. W doświadczeniu badano następujące cechy: wysokość roślin, liczbę rozgałęzień, plon świeżej masy surowca, strukturę plonu, zawartość polifenolozwiązków, zawartość kwasu cykorynowego, plon nasion i masę 1000 nasion. Na podstawie otrzymanych rezultatów wybrano ród nr 4, który zgłoszono do prawnej ochrony w COBORU.

Hordein polypeptides patterns of 146 mutants in M7 from a hulless spring barley breeding line were examined. The mutants were obtained after treatment of grains of Polish hulless spring barley breeding line, 1N/86, with the chemomutagens N-nitroso-N-methylurea and sodium azide. The mutants were distinguished from the parental line with regard to morphological and yield structure traits. SDS-PAGE of the main hordein fractions, B and C, showed that the electrophoretic patterns of the majority of the analysed mutants were similar to the hordein polypeptide spectrum of the parental line. However, specific hordein patterns were obtained from six of the mutants. In the previous study, the same mutants showed a significantly better feeding value as compared to hulled cultivars and the rest of the analysed mutants.

Over the last 50 years the traits of valuable indigenous Lithuanian Žemaitukai horse have not been investigated and during the last decade the breed became on the verge of extinction. Recently certain measures were undertaken to preserve the breed, evaluate its present characteristics and compare them with those reported earlier. Body size and conformation traits of present-day Žemaitukai horse (ŽH) were found corresponding or similar to those of the ancient type, showing that many valuable characteristics of the breed are retained. Mares’ milk yield and composition were evaluated, as well as development of foals based on body dimensions. Genetic variation, genetic structure as well as relationship between the lines and families of ŽH were studied using blood typing and electrophoretic analysis of serum proteins. Gene frequencies are presented at six blood group (A, D, C, Q, P, K) and five protein ( Al, Es, Gc, Xk, Tf) loci. The genetic diversity within blood groups and serum proteins in ŽH kept in a closed population showed that out of eleven genetic systems examined, six were polymorphic. This is especially so for the A and D, as well as Es and Tf systems. The distribution of allele frequencies varied between the lines and families.

Zestawiono dostępne dane o liniach i rodzinach koni żmudzkiej rasy Žemaitukai (mierzyny), ich pokroju, mleczności i składzie mleka klaczy oraz o strukturze genetycznej. Polimorfizm genetyczny scharakteryzowano na podstawie sześciu układów grupowych krwi i pięciu białek surowicy krwi. Największy polimorfizm stwierdzono w obrębie układów A i D grup krwi oraz Es i Tf surowicy krwi.

The primary aim of the study was to establish the effectiveness of induced androgenesis in in vitro anther culture of two pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) breeding lines - ATZ1 and PO, and a hybrid between these two lines (ATZ1 X PO)F₁. Anther culture was maintained according to the method developed by Dumas de Vaulx et al. (1981) with some modifications. The experiment revealed that the effectiveness of androgenesis ranged from 4% for the ATZ1 line to 1.5% for the (ATZ1 x PO)F₁ and strongly depended on the developmental stage of flower buds, as well as the conditions for anther culture maintenance. The development of androgenic embryos was successfully induced only in anthers which originated from the flower buds with petals equal or slightly longer than sepals and there was a clear relationship between the length of the period of anther induction on CP medium and the level of kinetin in R₁ regeneration medium.
