The aim of this study was to determine the effect of water extracts prepared from fresh and dry matter of winter savory (Satureja montana L.) on mortality of wingless females and larvae of black bean aphid (Aphis fabae Scop.). The experiment was conducted in the laboratory, in six replicates. Dry extracts were prepared at concentration of 2%, 5% and 10%, while the fresh plant at concentration of 10%, 20% and 30%. Stomach poisoning of extracts was determined by soaking broad bean leaves in the respective solutions, and then determining mortality of wingless female and larvae feeding on leaves thus prepared at 12 hour intervals. The results of the experiment showed that the extract prepared from dry matter at the highest concentration (10%), as well as the extracts from fresh matter at concentration of 20% and 30% contributed to an increase in mortality of wingless female of black bean aphid. Meanwhile, extracts prepared from both dry and fresh matter at two highest concentrations caused an increase in mortality of larvae of this pest. Furthermore, with increasing concentrations of analysed extracts prepared from both fresh and dry matter of winter savory, their negative effect on wingless females and larvae usually increase.

During the 2008-2009 time period, the effect of phacelia grown with broad bean on the presence of Syrphidae in colonies of Aphis fabae Scop. as well as the attractiveness of phacelia flowers for syrphid adults was researched. In A. fabae colonies, 9 Syrphidae species were collected. On plots with phacelia, less aphids and more syrphid larvae, compared to the homogenous crop, were observed. The dominant species were: Episyrphus balteatus, Shaerophoria scipta, Syrphus ribesii and Epistrophe eligans. Among the 9 species of Syrphidae collected from tansy phacelia flowers, the same species dominated as those noted in A. fabae colonies on broad beans intercropped with phacelia. Sowing plants of value to Syrphidae, such as phacelia, is probably the ideal habitat management option for early occurrence of syrphids. Such a practice result in the reduction in crop damage by aphids.

Field experiments were carried out in 2006–2008. Faba bean plants were heavily infested with Aphis fabae, resulting in high loses in yield. Application of natural pyrethrin only slightly reduced the number of this pest. Effective control was observed when synthetic insecticide was applied. A development of an effective control method is very purposeful.

W badaniach uwzględniono trzy odmiany łubinu żółtego i trzy łubinu wąskolistnego.

Three varieties of yellow lupine as well as narrow-leaf lupine were taken into account in the course of investigations. Two species of aphids i. e. Acyrtosiphon pisum Harris and Aphis fabae Scop, occured on these varieties. Acyrtosiphon pisum Harris dominated on all varieties each year. Aphids preferred yellow lupine to narrow-leaf lupine. The beginning and maximum of their appearance depended on climatic conditions. High level of rainfall limited their appearance, whereas high temperature and low rainfall decreased periods of development and enhanced their quantity.
