This paper is meant as a contribution to recent scholarly debate on the literal, non-literal and analogical reading of Aristotle’s assertion in DA II,12 that perception consists of “receiving forms without matter”. It focuses on Myles Burnyeat’s interpretation of DA II,5 and of the notion alloiōsis tis. I discuss several attempts to disprove the non-literalist argument that in this chapter Aristotle defines a new concept of (“extraordinary”) alteration, which is not bound to any “ordinary” alteration in the way in which form is bound to matter. In general terms I formulate an objection to the literalist presumption (shared by some of those who suggest an “analogical” reading) that perception is a hylomorphic change. There are, apparently, in Aristotle’s sublunary world of natural composites changes that cannot be analysed into form and matter. I give some reasons for believing that perception ranks among these changes. If this reconstruction is true to Aristotle’s position, then in DA II,5 he offers his most refined characterization of the peculiar place that perception as a receptive activity occupies in the natural world.

The Mazra'eh Shadi deposit is one of the most representative gold deposits in the Ahar-Arasbaran Belt. The main minerals are galena, sphalerite, pyrite and chalcopyrite. Concentrations of Au-Ag occur mainly within quartz veins. Five textures (crustiform, comb, microcrystalline, cockade, and mosaic) are distinguished by field reconnaissance and hand specimen observations. The δ34S values suggest an increasing role of meteoric water from the deepest levels to the shallow level and surface. Fluid inclusion data show that the mineralisation at the Mazra'eh Shadi deposit can be classified as a volcanic-rock-hosted intermediate-sulphidation epithermal deposit. Fluid inclusions in vein quartz can be distinctly divided into three types according to interpretation of petrographic features: intense boiling, gentle boiling and non-boiling conditions. The presence of intense and gentle boiling among different substages at the same level in the Mazra'eh Shadi deposit indicates that the base of the boiling zone likely shifted upward and downward during vein formation. The concentrations of Au-Ag occur mainly within quartz veins in the shallow level with gentle boiling (max. 813 ppb Au) and with intense boiling (max. 2420 ppb Au), whereas lower Au-Ag concentrations are associated with base metal-rich (Pb-Zn) in the deepest levels with non-boiling fluids (max. 52 ppb Au).

Apoptosis is a genetically programmed phenomenon that aids in maintaining homeostasis in multicellular organisms. The characteristic morphological features of apoptosis are highly conservative and are dependent on the cell type and the apoptotic inducer. The nuclear events occurring during apoptosis include changes at the molecular level (i.e. DNA cleavage, modifications of nuclear polypeptides, and proteolysis of several proteins important for cell maintenance), and, consequently, alterations at the morphological level (i.e. chromatin condensation, nuclear shrinkage, DNA fragmentation and apoptotic body formation). These events are still not fully understood. It is very probable that a progressive decrease in pH could also be an essential factor for the induction of nuclease and protease activities, and an important element of the optimal conditions for their function. This review details the current state of knowledge on apoptotic nuclear events, with particular focus on the proteins involved in the execution of apoptosis in cell nuclei, and on the differences in substrate cleavage profiles for different types of cell undergoing celi death.

Gregorowicz К., Kosiński S., Traczyk W. Z.: Alteration of brain stem auditory evoked potentials after intracerebroventricular administration of met-enkephalin in rabbits. Acta Physiol. Pol. 1990, 41(1-3): 63-70. Brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) were elicited by binaural click stimulation and recorded from the rabbits with chronically implanted electrodes and a cannula for intracerebroventricular injection (i.c.v.). 4000 BAEPs were averaged off line. The registration was carried out before and after i.c.v. injection of met-enkephalin (2.5 or 25 nmol), naloxon (20 μg ), or i.v. injection of morphine (1.0, 2.0, 5.0 mg/kg b.w.). Enkephalin caused shortening of interpeak latency time, naloxon caused its lengthening, while the effect of morphine was not unidirectional. Enkephalin caused increase in the surface area below the negative peaks located in the range of 4.5-7.5 ms from the first positive peak, naloxon caused its decrease while the effect of morphine was also in this respect not unidirectional. It is concluded that opiate receptors are involved in the modulation of the auditory brainstem responses.

The 1994 Construction Law Act has been in force for over 20 years now. Repeatedly amended it still does not meet expectations. It is negatively assessed as being complicated, inconsistent, unclear and difficult to interpret and apply in practice. Certain hopes are associated with the last change effective from January 1, 2017, developed under the so-called: Package of Deputy Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki – “100 changes for companies” – aimed at improving the legal environment of entrepreneurs.

Due to its natural properties, Trichoderma reesei is commonly used in industry-scale production of secretory proteins. Since almost all secreted proteins are O-glycosylated, modulation of the activity of enzymes of the O-glycosylation pathway are likely to affect protein production and secretion or change the glycosylation pattern of the secreted proteins, altering their stability and biological activity. Understanding how the activation of different components of the O-glycosylation pathway influences the glycosylation pattern of proteins and their production and secretion could help in elucidating the mechanism of the regulation of these processes and should facilitate creation of engineered microorganisms producing high amounts of useful proteins. In this review we focus on data concerning Trichoderma, but also present some background information allowing comparison with other fungal species.

Activation of the Hsp90 chaperone system is a characteristic of cancer cells. The regulation of chaperone activities involves their interaction with cochaperones; therefore we investigated the expression of Hsp70 and Hsp90 and their specific co-chaperones HOP and CHIP in cancer cell lines and primary cancers. Inhibition of Hsp90 by 17AAG increased the levels of Hsp70, Hsp90 and HOP but not CHIP mRNA in cancer cells. These changes are linked to activation of the HSF1 transcription factor and we show that the HOP promoter contains HSF1 binding sites, and that HSF1 binding to the HOP promoter is increased following 17AAG. The lack of alteration in the co-chaperone CHIP is explained by a lack of HSF response elements in the CHIP promoter. Non-proliferating cells expressed higher levels of CHIP and lower HOP, Hsp70 and Hsp90 levels compared to proliferating cells. Decreased expression of CHIP in proliferating cancer cells is in keeping with its proposed tumor suppressor properties, while over-expression of HOP in proliferating cells may contribute to excessive Hsp90 activity and stabilization of client proteins in tumors. In a panel of colorectal cancer samples, increased expression of Hsp70 and an increased ratio of HOP to CHIP were found, and were associated with decreased median survival. These data indicate that multiple changes occur in the chaperone/co-chaperone system in cancer that impact patient survival. It is likely that the ability to identify individual alterations to this system will be beneficial for treatment strategy decisions, particularly those that employ chaperone inhibitors.

Background. The abundance of club cells in epidermal tissue of fishes in the superorder Ostariophysi is a poorly understood phenomenon. Previous results have suggested that epidermal club cells have a generic role in response to injury and that they display intense phagocytotic activity, having an anti-parasitic function in the host. Earlier works suggested that club cells are usually located in the middle of the epidermis and that they do not communicate with the epidermal surface or do it only when the epidermis has been ruptured by predation. The presently reported study focused on the alterations of club cell activity in carp epidermis induced by ectoparasite, Ichthyophthirius multifiliis. We hoped that our observations would help to understand the function(s) of these cells. Materials and methods. This study was based on 200 four-month old common carp, Cyprinus carpio L., with mean body weight of 65 ± 5 g. The fish were experimentally infected with theronts of Ichthyophthirius multifiliis. In sequential days post infection, samples of fins and body skin were collected for histological and histochemical examination. The correlation between club cell densities and mucous cell densities was analysed using Pearson correlation analyses. Results. A local reduction of mucous cells occurred after theront invasion-induced proliferation, and increased club cell density around the parasite during the growth of trophonts. After parasites left the skin due to salt-water treatment, a decrease in the number of club cells was detected. During reinvasion the decrease in parasite activity in areas of club cells proliferation was not noted. It was found that giant mature club cells were opened on the surface. Conclusion. Club cells have no anti-parasitic function against I. multifiliis and these mature cells released their viscous secretion into water. The high density of club cells in the epidermis compensates an overall low density or absence of mucous cells. As it can be hardly concluded that the function of club cells is phagocytic removal of cell debris, an integrated research on mucosal immune mechanisms, as well as studies on epidermal tissue responses on product(s) released by club cells (“alarm substance cells”) should be carried out in the future.

The effects of pollution on the biodiversity and genome response of Chironomidae larvae (Diptera, Insect) were evaluated in the trace metal contaminated water environments. No change on the Chironomid species diversity was found. The higher concentrations of trace metals (Cd, Pb, Cr, and Zn) affect the genome of 5 cytogenetically studied Chironomid species: Chironomus bernensis, C. plumosus, C. sp.1. Kiefferulus tendipediformis (cytotype 2), Glyptotendipes cauliginellus (syn. Glyptotendipes gripekoveni). Genome instability of Chironomid larvae was manifested by two ways: 1. Fixed chromosome rearrangements; homozygous inversions and tandem fusions created new gene linkage groups and show an intensive microevolutionary process of species. 2. Somatic structural (inversions, deficiencies, deletions, breaks); and functional alterations (decreasing the activity of the key structures: Balbiani rings (BRs) and Nucleolar Organizer (NOR)) in salivary gland chromosomes of cytogenetically studied Chironomidae species. Detecting somatic rearrangements in salivary gland chromosomes of these widely distributed aquatic insects is potentially one of the best validated bioassay and can be used as a cost effective early warning signals of environmental damage in freshwater basins.

The influence of three monofunctional reactive dyes on the physico-mechanical properties, relaxation characteristics and deformation behaviour of viscose rayon is followed as a consequence of the structural alterations occurring during the process of dyeing. The alteration in the studied indices is of a complex character, which reflects the two-stage penetration of the dyes in which inter-fibril and inner-fibril amorphous regions of the structure differ in density. The alterations registered in the propertiesy are the result of the complex influence of the relaxation processes and the 'cross-linking effect' in the regions of the viscose fibres mentioned.

Badano wpływ trzech monofunkcyjnych barwników reaktywnych na właściw fizyko-mechaniczne, charakterystyki relaksacji i przebieg deformacji jedwabiu wiskozowego, wynikające ze zmian strukturalnych zachodzących podczas procesu barwienia. Zmiany badanych parametrów mają skomplikowany charakter spowodowany dwustopniową penetracją barwników w amorficzne przestrzenie międzyfibrylarne oraz do wnętrza fibryli, stanowiące obszary o zróżnicowanej gęstości. Zmiany właściwości są wynikiem oddziaływania zarówno procesów relaksacyjnych jak i sieciowania w wyżej wspomnianych obszarach włókien wiskozowych.

In fungi transfer of the first mannosyl residue to proteins during their O-glycosylation is catalyzed by protein O-mannosyltransferases encoded by pmt genes. Disruption of the pmt1gene in Trichodermacaused a significant decrease in the total activity of protein O-mannosyltransferases. Moreover, disruption of the pmt1gene also led to osmotic sensitivity of the strain, indicating an essential role of the PMTI protein activity for cell wall synthesis. At the same time, the strain was defective in septa formation, producing only half the number of septa per unit length of hypha compared with the wild type. Disruption of the pmt1gene decreased protein secretion but had no effect on glycosylation of secreted proteins, which suggests that PMTI protein O-mannosyltranferase does not take part in glycosylation of these proteins.
