Aim: To present the figure and scientific achievements of prof. dr hab. Zygmunt Ruta. Methods: An analysis of archival and printed sources. Results: A very rich scientific and didactic activity of Zygmunt Ruta was presented. It was emphasised that he was a long-term head of the Institute of the History of Education and Upbringing, and in the years 1982–1997 he was the head of the Department of the History of Education and Upbringing at the Pedagogical University of Cracow, and a member of several scientific societies. Conclusions: Zygmunt Ruta, through his scientific and didactic activity, made a significant contribution to higher education in Cracow and Poland. He influenced the development of young academics in a positive manner.
