In the years 1992-1994 in the commune "Otmuchów'' research on the profitability of the chemical protection of sugar-beets in the sanitary protection zone of the water reservoir "Otmuchów" was carried out. The aim of the research was to determine the intensity of outlays on the protection of sugar-beets as well as the profitability of pesticide usage in different area groups. The data for the research were collected by means of a questionnaire and described by means of vertical-horizontal analysis, together with the use of appropriate reasures and ratios determining the intensity of pesticide usage. The results of the research have shown that in zones 1 and 2 of the sanitary protection intensive chemical plant protection was carried out, with high profitability of pesticide use. In order to protect the natural environment against the threats of chemization of the commune the infrastructure of plant protection should be extended and improved, especially with regard to social and economic aspects.
