The paper deals with the causes, preparations, course and results of the expedition of Polish scholars from Poznań in October 1935 with the aim of getting acquainted with the German archaeological excavations on Wolin. The paper is based on so far unused source materials. The expedition is presented within the context of the political and scholarly relations between Poland and Germany.

Abstract: In the second half of the 20th century during archaeological excavations in the area of the Old Town in Wolin were discovered remains of two features which stood out against the background of wooden structures characteristic of this centre in the early Middle Ages, dated to the second half of the 9th century and the 10th-11th century which were interpreted as pagan temples. As a result of later reinterpretation of sources the hypothesis of functioning in Wolin pagan cult focused around the two temples was negated. According to the author of this text the analysis of available source base does not seem to give rise to such an unequivocal interpretation and rejection of earlier findings.

Abstract: The article is a polemical response to Błażej Stanisławski’s (2011) comments on early medieval construction in Wolin published in Volume VI/VII of ‘Materiały Zachodniopomorskie’. I do not agree with the dating of the oldest log construction and wattle-and-daub construction buildings. I also question the terminology used by this researcher, Furthermore, I believe there is some exaggerated interpretation of finds, unreliable reconstructions of post-and-beam buildings, erroneous selection of illustrations for the presented issues and a lack of examples as well as references supporting the theory of Frisian analogies of the post-and-beam construction. In the section on palisade construction structures I polemicize B. Stanisławski on Wolin long houses, we agree that the presence of the palisade construction buildings in Wolin is not synonymous with the presence of Scandinavian settlers. The vertical-post log construction was, in my opinion, presented too briefly based on only one building from trench 6 in Wolin’s Old Town. In summary, I conclude that the work by B. Stanisławski has many shortcomings, the reinterpretations of discoveries of older researchers are unconvincing and the presented documentation is inaccurate.

The paper presents an analysis of a ring with knot-like protuberances (Knotenringe) made of copper alloy which was discovered in 2000 at the early medieval settlement at Wolin 4. A few artefacts of this type are known from sites of the Oksywie and Przeworsk cultures, dated to phases A2–A3 of the younger pre-Roman period. Their presence is linked to the influence of Celtic oppida in Slovakia. The discovery of the ring on an early medieval settlement with no relation to older settlement gives grounds to consider it as a result of recycling and attempts to reuse the raw material.

The inflow of oriental silver to the lands of Western Slavdom, through the centers of Eastern Europe via the Baltic Sea, was the main determinant of material contacts between the communities of the two regions of the continent. However, they show only one direction – namely, from east to west. The results of the latest research show their second aspect, this time relations from west to east. To the centers located in the north-western zone of Eastern Europe arrived ceramic vessels specific to pottery of the North-Western Slavic territory or people who made them there on the spot. In addition, Tornow type vessels have been registered in Gorodok on the Lovat river. The chronological framework of the occurrence of these artefacts corresponds to the times when the strongholds in the Tornow-Klenica zone were liquidated. Staraya Ladoga and Wolin played a leading role in these relations. Both strongholds served as nodal points, where the forms of trans-Baltic shipping were combined with the inland navigation routes leading deep into both areas. The material culture of the communities of these settlements is also characterized by a number of similarities. Large buildings of post-and-plank construction were discovered there, erected at the end of the 9th and the beginning of the 10th century. The presence of large houses that stand out in the landscape of both centers is also perceptible in the second half of the 10th century. The material culture registered inside and in the vicinity of these wooden structures indicates that they could have been the seats of people involved in long-distance trade who can be regarded as “trade diasporas”. Their attributes included wooden anthropomorphic idols, balances and weights, and artifacts of Oriental origin. This article is an attempt to initiate a new Polish-Russian discussion on the cultural ties between the communities of Polish lands and Rus’ in the early Middle Ages.

Two specimens of Oslo rhomb porphyries find on the Wolin Island beach between Międzyzdroje and Grodno are extraordinary finds among the entire population of Scandinavian indicator erratics within glacial sediments in northern Poland. Only around 20 localities of erratics from Oslo have been noted in that part of Poland so far (Schulz, 1973). Unfortunately, the stratigraphy of the Wolin erratics is not known, because they have been found on the stony abrasion shelf at the foot of a cliff. The cliff itself consists of two separate till layers. The petrographical analysis of the lower bed of gray glacial till where rhomb porphyries had been found, point to distinctly north-western direction of an ice sheet advance (50 % of the entire population of erratics from sample 3 derive from western mother regions in the southern Baltic bottom). The analysed indicator erratics form the lower Wolin till represent the south-eastern Sweden and western part of the bottom of Baltic depression. The ice-sheet, approaching from the north, has transgressed on these outcrops before reaching the mother regions of Cretaceous limestones, which are located in the direct vicinity of the Wolin Island. The ample content of western erratics in sampled sediments of the Wolin cliff as well as the Oslo rhomb porphyries are of high interest. Have they come in icebergs (Benn & Evans, 1998, see Donner, 1995) or maybe their presence in glacial sediments should be connected with the Lagerlund's ice dome (1987, 1995)7 Schulz (2003) suggests a ship transport (as ballast stones). The planned detailed petrographical analysis on the Scandinavian erratics of the Wolin cliff should clarify the issue.

The bridge steel arches have total spans of 170 m and the roadway of standard width - 12 m. The span is built of two slanting steel arch boxes with rise of 24 m and steel/concrete decks after 3 years of exploitation. In the article the theoretical justification of a customary design conception and realization process has been described.
