The article is a critical commentary on the book Między etyką i estetyką. Rozważania nad problemem estetyzacji [Between Ethics and Aesthetics. Considerations on the Issue of Aesthetisation] (Toruń: Wydawnictwo UMK, 2017). Apart from analyzing ideas presented in the book, it provides a reflection on prior discussions on aesthetisation and the Polish reception of the topic, going on since 1990s. Whereas “surface aesthetisation” understood as an economic and PR strategy of embellishment used to be commonly criticized, the postmodern, anti-fundamentalist project of “deep-seated aesthetisation” had been more warmly welcomed. The anthology introduces a new accent in relation to the earlier discussions, because its main concern is the relationship between ethics and aesthetics. Although the book presents various perspectives, the authors generally argue for the need for ethical criteria and complementarity between ethics and aesthetics. In this sense, they counter Wolfgang Welsch’s thesis that “ethics is today in the process of transforming itself into a subdiscipline of aesthetics”.

Artykuł stanowi komentarz do książki Między etyką i estetyką. Rozważania nad problemem estetyzacji (Toruń, 2017). Analizę koncepcji prezentowanych w książce poprzedza przypomnienie kontekstu wcześniejszych dyskusji nad problematyką estetyzacji, w szczególności polskiej recepcji tej tematyki, począwszy od lat 90. dwudziestego wieku. O ile estetyzacja powierzchowna, rozumiana jako marketingowa i PR-owa strategia upiększania, spotykała się zazwyczaj z krytyką, bardziej pozytywnie przyjmowano postmodernistyczny, antyfundamentalistyczny program „estetyzacji głębokiej”. Omawiana antologia tekstów wprowadza nowy akcent w stosunku do wcześniejszych dyskusji, skupia się bowiem na relacji etyki i estetyki. Choć zostały w niej uwzględnione różne perspektywy, autorzy antologii opowiadają się za nieredukowalną potrzebą etycznych miar i wzajemną komplementarnością etyki i estetyki. Teksty zgromadzone w książce zaprzeczają w tym sensie tezie Wolfganga Welscha, że „współcześnie etyka sama przeobraża się w subdyscyplinę estetyki”.

The simulacre lightness of being – aestheticization in documentary photography The starting point for analyzing aestheticization processes in contemporary documentary photography in this text are both the “poetic” images of lightness in literature and culture analyzed in a lecture by Italo Calvino (Six Memos for the Next Millennium) and the critical thought of Wolfgang Welsch on intentional aestheticization processes in the real world. According to Welsch, these processes, through specific procedures of “lavishing lightness”, cease to be a binding image of the world and become part of a culture game (Grenzgange der Asthetik). Examples selected for analysis include award-winning documentary photography, including war photography, represented by the work of Georges Merillon, Sebastiao Salgado, Luc Delahaye, Simon Norfolk and Tim Hetherington. These ‘aestheticization procedures’ are outlined in this text in the context of the history of photography perceived as its “struggle” for a place in the history of art, as well as in the context of the theoretical considerations which accompany these processes.
