New packet transmission standard RPR is actually under development. The IEEE 802.17 standard will define a Resilient Packet Ring (RPR) Media Accsess Control (MAC) that is physical layer independent. The article is devoted to the presentation of this standard. It describes characteristics of RPR networks in the following areas: ring RPR and its node structures, basics of the transmission organization, protection mechanisms, topology discovery, frame formats and a fairness algorithm. Comparison of RPR to the SDH and Ethernet platforms is presented. It points out that RPR is a very attractive solution for MAN and WAN networks.

SGI and YottaYotta have developed a new architecture for data grids that leverages globally-shared file systems, automated multi-site data locality management, and multi-site authentication and access control. This document presents results of studies comparing performance for the new architecture to that of conventional data grid architectures.
