The heraldic arms of Uniejów have been the subject of intensive studies and monographic publicatins, and review works on town seals from Greater Poland contain extensive sections on the cross and three lilies of Uniejów. A key issue in the research on Uniejów’s identifying logo is the origin of the town seal. In the first half of the 16th century, five towns in the Gniezno Chapter within the historical area of Greater Poland (Grocholice, Grzegorzew, Piątek, Turek and Uniejów) had identical seals made, in which the graphic element – a Latin cross and three double lilie, which is the emblem of the Gniezno Chapter coat of arms – was combined with a pious motto and the name of the respective town. The uniform design for the seals was authored by cathedral canons from Gniezno. The style of the seal as well as preserved documents containing stamps of the seal indicate that it was made in the 1st half of the 16th century.

When we consider water in the cultural context, it allows us to understand and appreciate its role and importance in the life of people in the present-day civilisation. It is the main element of many family and annual rituals. It pervades the material, social and spiritual aspects of culture with the same intensity in the 21st century as in the past. Water allows man to move from one space to another and to transgress boundaries without negative consequences for himself and for the environment in which exists. In the past our ancestors used water to propitiate Nature, making also use of their bodies for that purpose, thus creating cultural codes which form cultural sequences connecting the past with the present. The inscription on kitchen towels „Fresh water will make you healthy”, no longer known to the youngest generations in the visual form, still remains actual. Each of us likes fresh water for drinking; we also seek water for its therapeutic properties, and prefer recreation in places with water reservoirs, both natural and artificial. In this way we get closer to the Beginning.

The article presents the history of the exploitation of geothermal waters in Uniejów. Interest in the use of geothermal waters in the area Uniejów began in the late 1960s, when the parameters of water examined during the drilling of the well Koło IG-3 were found to be satisfactory. The first hydrogeological well was drilled in Uniejów in 1978. The next two wells were drilled in the early 1990s as part of a large project, which aimed at creation of two doublets and multi-variant use of geothermal waters in Uniejów. Unfortunately, the opening of geothermal installations had to wait until the year 2001. The article also describes the current development of geothermal energy and water in Uniejów.

Tourism and recreation are a very topical issue in Uniejów – a city which only recently introduced and developed these functions. This article is devoted to the tourists-residents relationship. Apart from a review of selected theoretical issues it also presents findings of surveys which examined the attitudes of the inhabitants of Uniejów and its region to the growing numbers of tourists, and their opinions about the effect of the new functions on the situation of the city. The present level of development of Uniejów's tourist functions as measured by the Baretje-Deffert index is low. The city is currently in the growth stage (according to Butler's stages of tourist areas evolution). This is in line with the positive attitude of the resident population to tourists. The respondents to the questionnaire survey reported good or fairly good relations with tourists visiting the city. Also, the majority of Uniejów's inhabitants have a positive opinion about the influence of the changes taking place in the city on the quality of life. However, some negative effects of increased tourist traffic have also been poined out, such as higher prices of goods in the shops.

This paper addresses selected issues relating to Uniejów archdeaconry in the Old Polish period. The town of Uniejów was the central place – a seat of the archdeaconry, decanate and, most importantly, the collegiate chapter comprising 4 prelacies and 6 canonries, and the requisite number of curacies. The vice-provost was also the village vicar, and the vice- archdeacon was the town vicar. The collegiate church ran a school and fraternities. In the town there also were: church and hospital of Holy Spirit, Oratories of St. Nicolaus, Corpus Christi, St. Adalbert, and St. Anthony the Abbot. The nearby town of Sieradz with its chapter also was one of the main archdeaconry centers. The Uniejów archdeaconry77 was a part of Gniezno archdiocese, and most probably was formed as a result of administrative reforms carried out by archbishop Jakub Świnka. In our times it was devided into four, next five and finally into six decanates comprising between 86 and 106 parishes. The Uniejów chapter was reactivated in 1990.

It does not often happen in the history of urban development that conditions in which towns are functioning are radically changed. Uniejów on the river Warta, with a population of a little above 3000, is one of such urban centres – its development path is now taking a new turn due to intensive development of tourism and recreation functions. The changes that are taking place in Uniejów are primarily affecting its residents. To find out their opinions on the new situation a survey has been conducted on a random sample of the inhabitants of the city and its region. The responses received show that generally the perception of the changes is positive – 100% of the respondents appreciate the improved appearance of the city and 76% point to increased economic growth. On the other hand, there are opinions indicating limited participation of the inhabitants in the success of the city – there are persons who feel to be affected negatively or not at all. This may be due to the fact that Uniejów has only very recently started the new development trajectory and it is too early for all the residents to feel its impact.

The authors have used multiannual data from meteorological stations located in the vicinity of Uniejów. It was found that the climate and bioclimate of the city are suitable for climate therapy. The most useful is the period from the beginning of May to the middle of October when the majority of patients can practice one of several forms of climate therapy (aerotherapy, heliotherapy, terrain therapy).

Due to the dynamic development of geothermal investments and increase investment in tourism, Uniejów region becomes an attractive place to leisure and recreation. A large number, of events (over 77 festivals) in the city (including 5 national festivals) requires not only the physical shape of public spaces (such as squares, parks, castle and others), but also must socialize physical public space for cultural purposes. It's more dynamic festivals in Uniejów periodic tourist traffic for such a large number of tourists it is necessary to meet the conditions for the use of public space. Seasonal festivals (POW WOW Spring Festival of Song and Dance Company of North America, National Water Festival, the Grand Knight of the Castle Tournament in Uniejów, Indian Summer - Day Avenue of them. Tue-Okha), enliven the newly created city space. Designed around recreational areas, must be not only friendly but clear to read. The public space around the term is diverging from the historical center of novelty, which integrate with the rest of the city is extremely difficult.

The article discusses the basis for development of spa and recreational functions in Uniejów. The town has favourable natural (geothermal water, climate) and historical conditions (medieval town center). Currently, in connection with the above-mentioned assets, a new morphological unit intended for leasure activities is developing in the left- bank part of Uniejów. Maintaining the balance in the development of the emerging left- bank section and the right-bank (of medieval origin) section of Uniejów seems to be the right path to ensuring sustainable growth of the town. The spatial policy and spatial planning of Uniejów should be oriented to promoting the development of both parts of the town to obtain the synergy effect.

Local (endogenous) factors are important elements in the development of cities. Today, many cities look at local traditions and identity as well as local natural and social potential as a source of ideas for shaping a new, unique image of the city, its promotion and future development. This paper focuses on highlighting the role that endogenous factors have in the development of a city on the example of two chosen urban units: Uniejów, located in Łódź voivodship, and Dąbie in Wielkopolska voivodship. The choice was guided, on the one hand, by similarity of their natural conditions, and on the other – by a significant difference in their socio-economic development. Endogenous capital is mainly identified as the historical and the social potential.

W 1808 roku wprowadzono na ziemiach polskich instytucję publicznego notariatu. Pierwsze transakcje zawarte w 1809 r. w Uniejowie zapisano w księdze notarialnej powiatu warckiego.

In 1808, the institution of public notary was introduced on Polish territories. The first transactions conducted in 1808 were entered in the notarial register of the Warta district. The majority of those records concerned the investments of one of the richest citizens of Uniejów, Stanisław Pieczyński. He made many purchases at that time, mostly in Uniejów, including land, a brewery, a ruined house owned by burghers named Ptaszkiewicz, and a property formerly belonging to a local clergyman. S. Pieczyński also donated a large sum of money to a hospital in Uniejów which catered for the poorest inhabitants of the city. These transactions are testimony to his affluence, which allowed him for investing in real estate and for charitable actions.

The article describes stages in the formation of voluntary fire brigades on the territory of former communes of Skotniki and Kościelnica in 1918. Examples of localities where such fire brigades were organized are Czepów, Wilamów, Orzeszków, Ostrowsko and Wielenin. The managing body of the joint Czepów-Wilamów unit was almost entirely composed of Czepów residents. When this fire brigade was divided into two units, the firemen from Wilamów joined the National Fire-Fighting System. As the centenary of the existence of these fire brigades is approaching, it is worthwhile to remind their organizational beginnings, which took place at the time of re-creating Polish statehood after a long period of partitions.

The main objective of this article is to assess the flood risk on the area exposed to floods in Uniejów. The assessment was made based on the analysis of the land use. In the article the 100-year water was divided into four problem areas: objects of social importance, valuable natural areas and objects of cultural heritage, objects posing hazard for human and environment, areas that generate economic losses. Differentiation of flood risk is a very important issue in the context of flood protection. Risk assessment is an extremely difficult task, as same as issue of protection of river valleys. Buildings occur on the area of 100-year water in the city. During a flood event, the biggest losses are over there. The implication is the location of Uniejów, below the storage reservoir, which leads to the intensification of land use.
