In this paper the influence of selected oils which are aromatic hydrocarbons on microbial activity of a soil is discussed.Selected enzymes: amylases, proteases, dehydrogenases ans celulase Cx were tested.

Pentachlorophenol (PCP) is a toxic xenobiotic of great environmental concern. It has been widely used for many years as a bactericide, fungicide, defoliant, herbicide and wood preservative. In this article, PCP properties, microbial biodegradation and other approaches of this xenobiotic elimination from contaminated areas are reviewed.

The phenomenon of blue-green algae blooms in the Baltic and the surrounding freshwater bodies has been known since several years. Recently these blooms have increased. The negative effects of this phenomenon concern not only environ-ment but also pose epidemiological threats because some blue-green algae produce toxins. The presence of potential toxic blue-green algae species in the Gulf of Gda?sk as well in the whole southern Baltic has been noticed for almost hundred years. In the recent years, when water temperature reached more than 18?C, the rapid growth of Nodularia spumigena has been observed. In the year 1994, the huge bloom with toxic features of this species has been noticed. With less intensity such a bloom appeared also in 1996. Since several years Anabaena flos-aquae blooms in the Vistula Lagoon and Microcystis flos-aquae in many lakes in the Kashubian Lakeland.

The paper shows advantages of fluorogenic substrate in toxicity studies:(1) - the evaluation of the pure metal effect; (2) - the determination of antagonistic effects; (3) - the mechanism of inhibition (Hg, Pb and Cd were characterized by competitive, noncompetitive and ancompetitive, approprately).

In this paper we have presented data on an environmental exposure to N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) and factors which favour endogenoeaus biosynthesis of this compound. The factors influencing metabolism and toxicity as well as health effect of exposure have been reported.

The paper presents the results of studies on the influence of cooper, in the presence of siderophores, on the rate of carbon-14 incorporation into the algae cells.Axenic strains of unicellular algae:Scenedesmus microspina (Martens and Pankow), Anacystis nidulans (Nagelli) and natural populations of phytoplankton from the Gulf of Gdansk have been tested.

Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is a curative treatment of many hematological disorders. Recent studies have shown the associations between polymorphic features of cytokine-encoding genes and the incidence of post-transplant complications in the recipients of allogeneic HSCT. This review focuses on the relationship between the polymorphic patterns of patient genes encoding tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha and TNF-beta and the manifestation of post-transplant complications, acute graft-versus-host disease (aGvHD), generation of toxic lesions, and mortality. Discussed in more detail are the relationships of TNFd microsatellites and polymorphisms within the promoter region of the TNF-alpha-encoding gene (TNFA) in the position (?308) and within the first intron of the TNF-beta-encoding gene (TNFB). It appeared that heterozygosity within the TNFA promoter and the first intron of the TNFB gene increased the susceptibility to severe grades III?IV of toxic complications, while the presence of the TNFd3 homozygous genotype was associated with a higher risk of severe aGvHD and early mortality in patients after allogeneic HSCT. These results imply that donor-recipient genotyping, extended to cytokine loci, may be of prognostic value for transplantation outcome.

The results of investigations on the adaptation of a bioindicative assay based on ciliate sp. to detect harmful chemical substances in water solutions are presented. The experiment was carried out to assess the toxicity of heavy metals relative to the the Tetrahymena pyriformis culture used as the bioindicator. The culture was added to water solutions of heavy metals (As, Cd, Ni, Pb, Hg) and incubated at 28°C for 24 hours. Changes in the test organisms’ proliferation were assessed on the basis of microscope observations and direct readings of optical density, measured at 330 nm after 4, 6, 8 and 24 hours using a UV-VIS spectrophotometer. The experiments revealed different toxicity levels of the metals analysed; the method under consideration enables very small amounts of toxicity to be detected in water solutions or extracts.

A biomarker, or molecular marker, or reporter gene is defined as a DNA sequence introduced into organisms. It confers a distinct genotype or phenotype to enable monitoring in a given environment. Molecular markers such as: LacZ (-galactosidase), xylE (catechol 2,3-dioxygenase), lux (bacterial luciferase), luc (insect luciferase), phoA (alkaline phosphatase), gusA and gurA (-glucuronidase), gfp (green fluorescent protein), bla (-lactamase) and antibiotic or heavy metals resistance genes are widely used in genetically engineered (GEMs) microorganisms research. These genes are involved in the detection and enumeration of GEMs after their introduction into the environment. Molecular markers, especially lux and gfp, are widely used in the creation of whole-cell based biosensors which are commonly used for the examination of toxicity of environmental pollutants.

In the investigations carried out on anaerobic biodegradation of pesticides, specific sludge activity and toxity of pesticides in batch tests were determined. The specific methanogenic sludge activity was deterined i.e. the amount of acetate as an amount of COD for methane production per gam of sludge VSS (voatile suspended solid) per 1 day. Using the toxity test the magnitude of inhibition caused by presence of Metaxychlor - organochlorine insecticide group of pesticides - was assessed. The laboratory model of UASB was used for sludge cultivtion ((for methanogenic activity tests).Total voume of the reactor was 6.4 l.A portion of digested sludge taken from a Myslenice municipal wastewater treatment plant was used as an inoculum.

The work present current view about toxic effects of platinum anticancer drugs. In the first part, the toxic effects of cisplatin as nephrotoxicity, ototoxicity, myelosuppression, anaphylacticlike reactions, neurotoxicity and gastrotoxicity are presented. The second part describes mechanisms of cisplatin. The third part, the toxicity of carboplatin and iproplatin are reviewed.
