The frequency level of 10 protozoan species, parasitizing four herbivorous fish (common, grass, silver and big head carp) in pond culture was analysed in relation to three seasons of the year (spring, summer and autumn). The species representing Ciliata (mainly trichodinids) appeared to be most frequent in the spring (at the end of a hibernation period in winter ponds), and less frequent (or even absent) in summer. On the contrary, the two species representing Myxosporea did not manifest such predisposition to be more frequent in “cold seasons”. Sphaerospora carassii was found almost exclusively in summer, while the occurrence of Myxobolus dispar did not show any seasonal dependence.
