The process of transformation in the Polish economy, transforming it from a planned economy into a market economy, has resulted, among others, in the liquidation of many heavy industry plants in the Upper Silesian Industrial Region (GOP). GOP cities, which grew up on the basis of heavy industry, were spatially planned according to the needs of mining and metallurgical plants. Liquidation of the plants resulted in the creation of degraded, unused post-industrial areas, scattered over various city districts. Their location is often very attractive, but with many drawbacks, such as degradation, contamination by harmful substances or unclear legal status, potential investors are reluctant to take interest in them. Detailed documentation of the land's characteristics, the effects of the activity previously carried out here, the community's expectations regarding the use and development of such land, will make it easier for the investor to take a decision on the redevelopment of the area. The article is an example of a preliminary analysis of a selected post-industrial area, which helps to outline the direction of its revitalization. (original abstract)

The transformation of the Polish economy during the period of its transformation from a planned socialist economy into a market economy resulted, among others, in the emergence of a large number of post-industrial areas which are no longer used. Located often in developed urban areas, with many disadvantages such as contamination or unstable ownership status, they are not of interest to investors. Exploiting the potential they undoubtedly have would in many cases require the investment of considerable resources, but in order for these to be allocated to the investment, the investor expects to gain complete knowledge of the character and specificity of the place. The article is an example of a preliminary analysis of a selected post-industrial area, which helps to outline the direction of future area redevelopment. (original abstract)

For revitalization programs to be effective, territorial governments have to introduce consolidated measures that support the planning, organization and implementation of revitalization measures to benefit local communities and economies, and to alleviate crisis situations in degraded areas. Such measures require unlimited access to data that accurately describe social, economic and environmental conditions. In view of the above, the main aim of this study was to propose a conceptual database model for the identification of degraded areas and areas proposed for planned revitalization under revitalization programs implemented in developed rural areas. The detailed objectives of the presented research were to describe the components of the proposed database and the sources of data for developing municipal revitalization programs. The diagram of the database model supporting the initial stages of revitalization was also presented. The research methodology involved analyses, inference and deduction. A questionnaire survey, conducted among geography, spatial planning, urban development and environmental experts, was used as a research tool in the study. The results of the questionnaire confirmed the validity of the components of the proposed database model. (original abstract)
