The paper presents intensity and frequency of drought periods in the vicinity of Zamość. Rainfall measurements which were carried out at meteorological station of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences in Zamość were used for this purpose. The precipitation-free periods were calculated on the basis of daily observations. Then the appearance of droughts were determined, assuming the following criteria: Gentle drought - 9-17 days, Moderate drought - 18-26 days, Long term drought - 26 days. Using the total of rainfalls and daily average temperature of the air, the Sielianinow rate was calculated to determine the degree of plant protection of water during the Vegetation period (April-October). Moreover, the paper describes the frequency of extremely dry, very dry and dry months, based on а method defining the shortage of water by comparing the rainfalls to an average long-term amount of precipitation, which were accepted as а norm. Droughts are common in the Zamość region and sometimes very oppresive for plants. On average it is recorded nearly 6 - gentle periods, 1 - moderate and 0.5 long-term drought during the year.
