As a grammatical text that can lead to the new observation about the state and development of grammatical thinking in Slovakia.

The paper takes a close look at artistic, ideological and existential vicissitudes of the Chamber Opera, constituted in May 1986 and closed down in June 1999. It summarizes one chapter in the history of the Slovak opera theatre, which in addition to some positive moments was marked by the absence of clarification of competencies and by unfulfilled, often mutually contradictory artistic ambitions of individual personalities who influenced dramaturgy and productions during twenty-three years of its existence.

This paper investigates the irreversibility of investments and their impact on the nature of the relationship between investment and uncertainty. The empirical analysis uses firm – level data and is based on a survey of 53 automotive suppliers, which was carried out during the year 2011. We find supportive evidence for the fact that uncertainty is negatively associated with planned investments of the companies surveyed, which remains true also in the presence of irreversibility. Yet, further investigation of the investment – uncertainty relationship and the role of irreversibility provide support for the view that the negative association between uncertainty and investment increases with the degree of irreversibility. So the degree of irreversibility of investment does influence the effect uncertainty has on planned investment.

The contribution gives information on evidences of extinct metallurgy in the Tribeč mountain range area, to which no historical sources exist and both kind and chronology of which have not been acceptably answered until recently. The results of surface prospection on some of these sites make us assume their connection with a modern-era glass production.

Since the 1990s Slovak theatre has been affected by several phenomena: the changing attitude of the public to theatrical art, who seems to be losing interest in this art form, the degradation of the systematic, conceptual, artistic and forming function of the dramaturge, and the loss of an in-house dramaturge or director who would be consistent in performing this function. Theatrical space has been filled with freelance artists wandering from theatre to theatre, offering attractive productions or adopting them on the impulse of theatre managements. We witness the strengthening of the powers of directors and art directors who often succumb to commercial and operational pressures, but also their personal tastes and convictions. Secondly, we witness the continuing trend of ‘directorial theatre.’ The individual theatres still prefer working on projects, and therefore, the repertory depends on the offer of guest directors, who bring their own dramaturges to the theatres, sometimes not being familiar with the wider context or lacking the ambition to work with the theatre company and the audience in the long term. We also witness a disruption in cooperation between a theatre’s dramaturge and translators, authors, visual artists and so on. Only few dramaturges have their own workshops that enable them to have a systematic and long-lasting cooperation, for example, with authors writing new plays or directors preparing new productions.

The Section 55 paragraph 2 of the Constitution of the Slovak Republic stipulates a positive obligation of the State to protect competition. This obligation is imposed on all public authorities, i.e. both the legislator and the bodies applying legal regulations. The public authorities are obliged to provide free access to the market and equality of the rules of conduct of the competitors on the market. When assessing the fulfilment of the legislator´s obligation to ensure equality of the rules of conduct of competitors on the market, the Constitutional Court of the Slovak Republic has developed an interesting case-law on admissibility of the criteria for distinguishing among competitors. Activities without economic substance are fully excluded from the scope of application of Section 55 paragraph 2 of the Constitution. For some activities with economic substance the obligation to protect competition is limited or excluded by other public interest.

The main objective of this study is interested primarily in the inter-individual diversity in fertility according to the parity distribution of women reproduction in Czech Republic and Slovakia. The authors identify a sharp decline in the concentration of reproduction during the 20th century at very low levels. It was primarily the result of a very low childlessness with combination of significant domination of the two-child family model. This trend has reversed for the most recent cohorts. It appears that this development mainly triggered by pluralization of reproductive behaviour. The youngest cohort tends to increase childlessness as well as increase the proportion of women with only one child. The growing concentration of reproduction suggests that future society in Czech Republic and Slovakia should not simply focus on “average” women (or mother) but should take into an account a wide spectrum of orientations and life strategies.

The study focuses on the relationship between self-regulation and decision making of Slovak managers in work-related situations involving routine circumstances and circumstances where inappropriate decision may lead to possible serious negative consequences. 143 Slovak managers were asked to choose some work-related situation of decision making and to assess it on the scales provided (routine or not routine, with or without possible negative consequences). They were administered a Self-Regulation Scale (Schwarzer et al., 1999) and Melbourne Decision Making Questionnaire (MDMQ) (Mann et al., 1997), adapted for the assessment of current decision making behaviour. The results showed that self-regulation correlated positively with vigilant decision making and negatively with maladaptive decision making, such as buck-passing, hypervigilance, and procrastination. Moderation analysis revealed that situations with possible negative consequences weaken the relationship between self-regulation and both vigilance as well as maladaptive decision making.

The paper is a case study of influence of international organizations on national/domestic policies. It analyses effect of major anti-corruption conventions of three organizations – OECD, Council of Europe and UN – on domestic policy in Slovakia to see whether these conventions matter for what actually happens in domestic policy. More broadly, it also looks at whether the current political science and sociological perspectives, with their dichotomy of external incentives and social learning, are appropriate for understanding the mechanisms through which such conventions operate. The conclusion is that, for domestic policymakers, international anticorruption conventions are not inherently either bonds of steel or bonds of straw. The external commitment would be used by domestic champions, but is not necessarily sufficient to override the domestic opposition.

This article contains the results of analysis of the highest wages of the employees in the Slovak Republic in 2010 using the methods of statistical inference. The information from the sample of the employees with wage higher than the 99th percentile of sampling data is generalized to the population using the Pareto distribution of wages. There are also identified the factors that have a significant impact on the frequency and on the level of extreme wages. These factors are gender, classification of occupations, industry, region of residence and age interval. The analysis has not confirmed a significant effect of the factor level of education on the amount of gross monthly salary of the employees in Slovakia with wage exceeds the upper percentile. According to these factors the paper identified groups of employees with the highest proportion or with the highest level of gross monthly salaries higher than 99th percentile in Slovakia in 2010.

In the article, regression analysis and ordinary least squares methods are used. According to the empirical results, the conflict between monetary and fiscal policy in Slovakia is identified. The stabilizing role of fiscal policy and problematic stabilizing role of monetary policy is confirmed. It contrasts with the other states of the Visegrad group.

In the circumstances of existing tendencies towards integration within uniting Europe, it is necessary to surmount mental stereotypes, which, from the historical point of view, have perceived borders and border zones as the areas of potential conflict, battlefield or buffer-zone, where all more significant investments are exposed to possible risk. Surpassing this legacy of the past is relevant also in the case of the Slovak-Ukrainian border zone, which though having a real potential is stigmatized by the phenomenon of periphery and border zone. The realized research, which is the subject of the study, assesses a current state of cross-border cooperation between the Slovak Republic and Ukraine and exposes its positives and at the same time also deficiencies, which are reflected by its participants.

Karol Plicka (1894–1987) documented a song repertoire from the singer Eva Studeničová in the village of Moravský Svätý Ján in the early 1920s. He regarded this woman as an exceptional figure among singers, who transcended the limits of the local culture. This article is devoted to a reconstruction of the records of songs which Plicka acquired from other singers in this village. The song records not only contribute to comparison of song variants and rendition styles but they also reveal the contemporary condition and preservation of traditional singing in the local culture. Based on source criticism, a song repertoire extending to 88 songs from 12 singers was identified. This song material represents a valuable supplement to Plicka’s register of songs from Eva Studeničová and provides an opportunity to compare the exceptional singer with several bearers of the local song tradition.
