Selenoenzymes in animal tissues after supplementation with SELOL

The aim of the present work was to examine whether SELOL influences the activities of selenoenzymes. The activity of the following selenoenzymes was measured in plasma, blood, and various animal tissues: plasma glutathione peroxidase (plGSHPx), cytosolic glutathione peroxidase (cGSHPx), type I and type II iodothyronine deiodinases (ID-I, ID-II), and thioredoxin reductase (THRR). Eleven sheep were randomly assigned to either study group – supplemented with SELOL (5 animals) - or control group maintained on standard diet (6 animals). The experiment lasted for one month. The above selenoenzyme activity was not influenced in the adrenals, brain, kidneys, liver, pituitary gland, spleen, and thyroid gland by SELOL administration. The results indicate that the pharmacological action of SELOL is more complex than for "classical" selenium containing compounds and further speciation study is necessary to clarify its biological functions.
