A particularly important segment of the historical landscape structures in the Tribeč foothills is represented by small sacral objects situated in the open landscape, or placed as solitaires in the historical cores of towns or villages. In addition to being a kind of memento mori – so that humans do not forget the transience of their own lives, they also served as a profane topographical object in defining land boundaries and as a landmark at crossroads. The various chapels, crosses, wayside shrines, bell towers, statues of saints are new challenges for the expansion of research and a “hidden” potential for the construction of national and European identity. Their meaning and symbolism has changed over time, but their overall genius loci and their memory in the country persists to the present day. Although they are often overlooked, they deserve special attention in terms of presentation, protection and targeted heritage care. The study deals with the cultural content of small Christian sacral monuments of folk objects as well as their typology based on a sample of the objects under study (roadside crosses, wayside shrines) in the open modern landscape of the western Tribeč foothills.

The formation of the Cyrillo-Methodian tradition in our history has an impact on the cultural landscape. The aim of the paper is a spatial identification of the cult of Sts. Cyril and Methodius as well as the study of its impact on the landscape of Slovakia. The first step is to identify tangible and intangible features, or, more precisely, cultural landscape elements. In Slovakia, we register in connection with Sts. Cyril and Methodius more than 120 sacral objects (churches, chapels, exterior sculptures). These, together with profane objects (schools, medical facilities) and intangible elements (e.g. street names, squares, organized events), are involved in the transformation of cultural, or, more precisely, religious landscape. The largest number of sacral objects arose after 1989, in the process of modern sacralisation of the landscape, which is typical of countries with renewed religious freedom.

Not only in settled civilizations, but also among nomads there existed outstanding individuals such as politics, soldiers, wise men, artists and religious figures, sometimes today being considered anonymous. The idea of the Universe is pronounced in detail in the large barrows of the chieftains of Saian-Altai nomad tribes. The centre of large Eurasian regions could be displaced depending on many time-wise and spatial factors. The necessity of astronomical observations, for nomadic peoples of Eurasia, existed in the sacral meaning of time. The celestial bodies, the Sun and the Moon were a part of the cult of the Sky. In the cult monuments of Siberia there was organised a complex system reflecting the relations of an ancient person with the natural environment, Space.
